Erikun··on The worst programmer I know
It might be from the great book The Idea Factory by Jon Gertner (p 135).

'In the midst of Shannon’s career, some lawyers in the patent department at Bell Labs decided to study whether there was an organizing principle that could explain why certain individuals at the Labs were more productive than others. They discerned only one common thread: Workers with the most patents often shared lunch or breakfast with a Bell Labs electrical engineer named Harry Nyquist. It wasn’t the case that Nyquist gave them specific ideas. Rather, as one scientist recalled, “he drew people out, got them thinking.” More than anything, Nyquist asked good questions.'
Erikun··on Becoming a contractor
I see the upsides, but am weirded out by the idea of being contractually obligated to remain ignorant of what the customer is paying for your services. Naively I'd imagine a competitor to Toptal could disrupt them by providing transparency and a flat percentage on top of the rate, but clearly there is something that makes that not happening.
Erikun··on Becoming a contractor
Am I the only one confused by why anyone would want to go with Toptal considering what is written in the article?
Erikun··on X/Twitter has updated its terms of service to let it use posts for AI training
It's Twitter International Unlimited, headquartered in Ireland. Still operational it seems, https://www.solocheck.ie/Irish-Company/Twitter-International...
Erikun··on ChatGPT web and mobile UIs unavailable
It's not the tool that is dystopian, it's the mindset expressed in the post.
Erikun··on ChatGPT web and mobile UIs unavailable
This is a level of dystopian helplessness I have a hard time wrapping my head around.
Erikun··on Gordon Moore has died
I'm a little curious, is there a reason why the ultra rich, once they've cashed out, create foundations that hand out grants? Is it because they suddenly find themselves wanting to do something good for society with the money or just because that is what everyone in that situation does? Is there a ranking of what foundations have done the most good work? Is that ever evaluated?

Anyway rest in peace Gordon Moore, a true captain of industry.

Erikun··on SVBUK Taken in to Insolvency
Did they suffer a run due to the name?
Erikun··on I broke a wine glass with my voice (2018) [video]
Terrifying disease.
Erikun··on The Fediverse is already dead
It feels like every federated network will be judged by the worst actor in that network, whether or not they are isolated from each other. As a result it doesn't matter (for public opinion) if there are strictly moderated mastodon instances because they will be associated with the free-for-all ones by the Mastodon name alone. This is different from how the internet as a whole is interpreted, where both HN and 4chan can exist without impacting each others reputation.
Erikun··on Be My Eyes – connects people needing sighted support with volunteers
Be My Eyes has been posted a few times, but was mentioned in the post about John Boyer, a deaf and blind software engineer, passing (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34931387). So I thought it was fitting to post it again.
Erikun··on Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals discovered in Sweden
The area around Viborg was lost to the russians in 1721 and 1743. The western part of that, Lappeenranta and part of Kymenlaakso, are part of Finland today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Finland
Erikun··on Europe's largest deposit of rare earth metals discovered in Sweden
Also most of todays Finland was under Swedish rule until 1809.
Erikun··on Raspberry Pi security alarm – the basics
Cool project. Its a shame though, I don't know what its like around the world, but in Sweden its damn hard to get a hold of Raspberry Pis at the moment.
Erikun··on No more airplane mode? EU to allow calls on flights
I just checked, on my iphone airplane mode turns off wifi. Doesnt turn off bluetooth though.
Erikun··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
I've never heard of that, if that is a fact it would be nice to include a reference.
Erikun··on The five-year engineering feat Germany pulled off in months
"In March, the German government asked energy companies to weigh a seemingly impossible engineering task. Could a new liquefied natural gas import terminal, which normally takes at least five years to build, be erected in this port town by year’s end?"

For anyone wondering what the specific feat was.

Erikun··on Breaking up with JavaScript front ends
Ah, mystery solved. Thanks.
Erikun··on Breaking up with JavaScript front ends
Am I missing something? They say to "Start classic" or "Start enhanced" on the first page of the demo app but neither is there for me.
Erikun··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
I'm not sure what you mean by conversations, if you mean the content of messages then no that is not metadata, if you mean who talked to whom, then yes that is metadata.
Erikun··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
I would guess its this story https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/10/us/politics/justice-depar...

But that doesn't match OP's description very well. It was a grand jury subpoena and only for metadata.

"As the Justice Department investigated who was behind leaks of classified information early in the Trump administration, it took a highly unusual step: Prosecutors subpoenaed Apple for data from the accounts of at least two Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, aides and family members. One was a minor."

"Apple turned over only metadata and account information, not photos, emails or other content, according to the person familiar with the inquiry."

Erikun··on China Covid: Protesters openly urge Xi to resign over China Covid curbs
I read somewhere that the football World Cup might have contributed to the unrest as well by showing on tv the complete absence of covid restrictions there.
Erikun··on AWS and Blockchain
In my opinion, removing the last paragraph would improve your post immensely. It would be a shame if the post got downvoted to oblivion because of it.
Erikun··on Layoff spree in Silicon Valley spells end of an era for Big Tech
What time scale are you referring to with "over time"?
Erikun··on Ask HN: Hobbies/Skills which can be picked in 30s and compete at world level?
I think you're right. It feels like if the problem is phrased as an activity you can become world class in while doing part time without having started before your thirties, you're pretty much restricted to things that are more subjective in their measurements. Arts and crafts have been mentioned. Otherwise the alternative is something of a niche character that there arent really any full time practitioners and the pool of practitioners is fairly small. Maybe something like air rifle shooting or drone racing?
Erikun··on About communication safety in Messages
Sure, but even that has become more uncommon than it used to be, in my experience.
Erikun··on About communication safety in Messages
Europe is a big place, maybe that beach was that way but its definitely not the norm. Naturist beaches are usually separate or there is a section that that is for naturists. In Sweden (where I live), even topless sunbathing is unusual nowadays.
Erikun··on About communication safety in Messages
"Messages now includes tools that warn children and provide helpful resources if they receive or attempt to send photos that may contain nudity. [...] Messages uses on-device machine learning to analyze image attachments and determine if a photo appears to contain nudity. The feature is designed so that Apple doesn’t get access to the photos."
Erikun··on Bitcoin slumps below key $20k threshold
Can’t read the article, what makes 20 000 a key threshold?
Erikun··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
