Epa095··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
I get the sarcasm, but its not like e.g. TSMC popped up in a environment of pure libertarian free market capitalism. It was, from the beginning, a project of the Taiwanese state, and without significant public influence there is no way it would have become what it is. Are the EU laws what's needed? IDK. But without a proper public industrial policy besides "low taxes and few regulations" there is no way Europe will be able to get significant semiconductor-production up, the rich-get-richer phenomenon is just to strong.

Epa095··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Its hard because its 27 different countries, but they are working on making it less hard. Many startups are made in Europe, but then bought up (often by Americans) or moves to USA when its time to expand outside the single countries boarders. Canada has the same problem.

Canada has made it pretty clear that they do not want to be part of the big country south of it, so they will have to find a way to create large companies that stays. Doing this together with a market of 450 million people seems like a good idea.

Epa095··on Financial Times' 404 Page not Found
I wonder why they chose this description for Pareto inefficiency:

There exists another page that will make everyone better off without making anyone worse off.
Instead of the correct

There exists another page that will make someone better off without making anyone worse off.
Makes me wonder if all the descriptions I know less about are all subtly wrong on purpose.

Epa095··on New Mexico court orders Meta to pay $567m over harms to children’s mental health
You have the right idea, but remember that tax rate is not 100%. So if a company gets a fine on X dollar, that reduces their surplus by X, and they pay e.g X*20% less in tax (if the tax rate is 20%).
Epa095··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Whats your actuall claim? That methane release is irrelevant for global warming? Or that beef production excluding methane is not more co2-expensive than plantbased protein production? Or both?

Anyway, feel free to make an actual argument. Both of the claims above of is contrary to established science, so you must say something more than 'you are wrong'.

Methane traps 81 to 84 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, but drops to 28 to 30 times more heat over a 100-year period.

Cows create methane (or rather the microbes in their bellies) from co2 and hydrogen, they do not 'capture' it from somewhere. More cows -> more methane, which heats the world more than the co2 used to create that methane would have heated the world.

Epa095··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Methane is a short-lived potent greenhouse gas. In regards to the effect on global warming there is no cushy cute 'circle of life its all natural dude ' effect, methane release heats the world.

Even ignoring methane gas releases the production of red meat causes higher emissions of co2 than comparable plant-based proteins. These emissions originate from feed crop production, synthetic and organic fertilizer application, manure storage, land-use changes like deforestation for pastures, on-farm energy use, and meat processing and transport. As you see most of these are 'running costs', and reducing global meat consumption would reduce emissions.

Epa095··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
But you just read an argument, and then completely ignored it, instead started brining up other aspects of red meat.

That most red meat is very co2 expensive compared to getting the proteins from other sources is a relevant argument for many of us, and not a particularly 'strange obsession' for those of us caring about reducing our co2 footprint.

It's interesting to see the power of wealth up close. For one the massive lobbying against any tax on the usage of the fjords(or on the wealth). But there is also cases where they will hire retired professors in tangentially related fields (like sea urchins) to write "scientific reports" "showing" whatever they want, which they then send to individual local MPs to convince them to allow more farming.

I appreciate your defence of the indefensible :P

I accept that psi is more intuitive in many cases than Pascals. But I remain unconvinced about Fahrenheit. I reside two places during the winter. One has temperatures around 0C, and the difference between -1C and +1C is much more important than the difference between -1F and +1F, it's the difference between rain or snow! The other place regularly sees temperatures around -25C. In both places -18C is just some random uninteresting temperature, letting it be 0 is... disturbing.

Epa095··on NYC Apartment Aquaponics
Cool project. I wonder how large a tank you need to get room fle aquatic animals you would actually eat.

And as a small aside, idk how one can write sentences like this and not immediately revolt and switch to metric:

Since a gallon of fresh water weighs roughly 8.34lbs, we estimate this puts the entire weight of the system’s water somewhere between 170 and 250lbs.
Epa095··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
No, Ukraine is not the (sole) reason. USA has been in multiple wars since 1945, and never used the bomb again. They know the value of the nuclear tabu, and are not interested in breaking it, independently of the situation in Ukraine. They also have enough conventional weapons to level Iran with those, so they dont need to use nukes.

In addition I would hope that even in the morally bankrupt state USA is in today, murdering 92 million people would cause some political problems (but this might be naive of me).

Epa095··on Future euro banknote design proposals
Decent enough, but quite boring. The nicest notes I know about currently are the Norwegian ones https://www.norges-bank.no/tema/Sedler-og-mynter/gyldige-sed...

Epa095··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
There is a very very large ocean between China and the USA, you cant just assume the lessons from the Ukraine-Russian war will transfer. It would be a completely different beast, and as OP said, missiles might play an important role for both sides. In such a scenario we might see both powers having most of their industrial base destroyed before any of their soldiers (or drones) come into reach of each other.
Epa095··on The glass backbone: Why the Army's logistics will break in the next war
> If massively provoked, e.g. Taiwan declares independence and joins NATO, sure.

You think NATO would stand there with open arms in such a case? NATO membership requires agreement from all member states, and I don't sense a great appetite among the European countries for a war with China.

I agree with the overall point of your post though.

Epa095··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2026
Up until now we have added 1 leap second every 2 year (27 leap seconds since 1972). So if it continues like this, in 7200 years it would be 1 whole hour, and in "only" 3602 years it will be closer to the next hour than the previous (so a natural time to add the leap hour).
Epa095··on Solar rail could become common in Europe after successful trial in Switzerland

Epa095··on Opening up 'Zero-Knowledge Proof' technology to promote privacy in age assurance
Idk if this scheme is zero knowledge, but what's wrong with it? :

- you enter ph and must age-verify. It says 'your secret: "capable peanut", enter age proof below'.

- you go to age-knower (e.g bank or government page). You provide the secret phrase, and you get back a cryptographically signed json with the secret phrase, a claim 'above18', and a field stating who attested for the age (e.g government or bank or whoever).

- you paste this signed json (maybe encoded as base64 or something) into ph. It will verify that the attestee is good, then use it's public key to verify the signature, before checking that the secret is the correct one, and that it contains the age-claim.

Is the problem that if ph and the attestee colludes they can compare the secret string and figure out who you are?

I agree with your analysis, at least as long as we shall remain strictly inside the free market methodologies. And having a common capital market would be good no matter what.

But there are other ways to pool resources than the free market. Airbus was not made dynamically in a market, neither was the LHC. 100 billion € is a lot, it's half of the total allocated aid from Europe to Ukraina. Which can be read in two ways, either 'helping Ukraine is already weighing us down, another similar cost is too much for some IT toy ', or 'Europe has the ability to collect massive amount of capital when it needs to, and AI is a existential threat which justifies it'.

Epa095··on Leanstral 1.5
Software in general, AI as well, is a rich get richer market. The big American companies can afford to (and very much do) scoop up European talents and upcoming European companies. And if they don't want to buy them, they can undercut them to bankruptcy. We live in a colony economy, with human capital as the raw produce, and it all gets funneled to the USA.

The only way to avoid this is to stop playing the game as it is today, and start using proper industrial policy to build up a competitive industry (like China did). There has been no appetite for that the last decades, but Trump is making it completely clear that the state is back, and Europe is slowly acknowledging it as well.

Epa095··on The US ambassador had Belgian police stop our reporting
It is, unfortunately, a quite common misunderstanding many have, that value is exclusively created in the private sector and spent in the public. So the private morgue creates value, and the public birth ward spends it. Nail saloons and lawyers create value, teachers and nurses does not (unless they work at a private institution).
