Entangled··on Ask HN: What is your best way to learn a new programming language?
Head first.

Open Xcode and start dropping controls over the initial form, then run it, close it and make buttons click, textfields do some calcs and tables show some records. If you can do that there is nothing you won't be able to do.

Entangled··on Enter 'petro': Venezuela to launch oil-backed cryptocurrency
As a Venezuelan I say this is a bad joke. They ransacked the central bank reserves, they pillaged all the gold bars in the vaults, they indebted the oil industry and there is nothing left to give as guarantee for more money. They only want to try circumvent the shitty currency they destroyed with their bad policies.

Stay away from this.

Entangled··on Would you send your kids to school on a self driving schoolbus?
With a supervising official on board, yes. And a web enabled streaming channel just in case.
Entangled··on American Equity
See, taxing people is not a solution to the problem, rich people will find ways to circunvent the rules and money will flow out of the country instead of being invested here. So the real solution is to stop taxing people and let them have their money so they can invest it here while also attracting capital from around the world.

Now, do you remember when the FED under Obama printed a trillion dollars a year for five years? Do you know where that money is? Is part of that in your pocket? I don't think so. Well, give that kind of money to 100 million americans in an installment of a thousand dollars a month and that would cover their basic needs while the whole country produces more with all the tax cuts to the producers. Of course much less regulation would do wonders to the economy, like eliminating patents, minimum salary laws, health and education regulations, etc. Go back to letting the individual produce with their own hands and minds without governemnt intervention and that will bring much more prosperity than any other idea. Except politicians won't like it.

So in short, while inflation (money printing) is a kind of taxation, we could easily print money (10% of GDP)to give it to the needy while reducing the size of government and regulations to increase production.

Entangled··on Bitcoin Mining Now Consuming More Electricity Than Many Countries
Honest question, what's holding the development of cryptocoins without mining?
Entangled··on RSS: there's nothing better
The problem with RSS is that I don't want to subscribe to blogs that have only one lucky post in a decade, I want a curated list of topics on a daily/weekly fashion and for that newsletters are the best. Unfortunately email is not the best platform for delivering content so I came up with an idea to offer a news reader that consumes newsletters you can subscribe/unsubscribe at any time. It's just like an email client but just for newsletters.

Lo and behold, opened a gmail account specifically for newsletters, subscribed to my swift, kotlin, design, UX and AI newsletters and I'm now using Apple Mail to have the time of my life consuming all the content I need, delivered to my inbox daily, with no spam, no friends, no follow, no ads, no nothing.

Of course there is still the possibility to provide a nice client rich in features for the common user so the idea for a startup is still in the air.

RSS is dead, long live newsletters.

Entangled··on Millennials to Small Cities: Ready or Not, Here We Come
> “The 18- to 35-year-olds expect something like that, but they just didn’t have it,” said Tyler Hodge, 32, who used crowdfunding to help finance the shop. The same tactic was used for a rock climbing gym opened in September by a group of young engineers who, like Hodge, spend their weekdays working at Cummins Inc., the diesel engine company that is the city’s largest employer.

Crowdfunding for brick-and-mortar? Now that's interesting, any links?

Entangled··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
There is the inevitability of paying for stuff with our watches, (ala Apple Pay but global, not just 1% of market share) so there is a small chance for a newcomer to disrupt a multi-trillion dollar market. And for those who don't use watches, then a small pocket device, be it a ring, cell phone or something like old Motorola pagers.

Those who miss the boat will blame themselves not being the next Whatsapp.

Entangled··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
I support this idea. I developed myself an app for handymen to post their ads but never published it. I know there is a huuuuge market for that and the few options available are good enough.
Entangled··on Amazon now has a billion-dollar ad business
Competition is good, even for heavens and hells.
Entangled··on Android Studio 3.0 Release Notes
Kotlin and Swift are godsends to the mobile development world. I am a happy programmer because of that. Kudos to Google and Apple.
Entangled··on Why We Must Fight for the Right to Repair Our Electronics
I wish I could install whatever I want on my phone without jailbreaking it. Let us have an option hidden in the settings (just like developer options) so we can install anything we want without permission or without the app expiring in a few days.

It's my damn phone!

Entangled··on How I Reduced My DB Server Load by 80%
Those who ignore CODD will learn it the hard way, forcefully.
Entangled··on How I Reduced My DB Server Load by 80%
SQL strings should always be in the hands of a DBA, not a developer. The RDBMS should get your request in the form of a SP call and get the data you need in the form of cursors.

So, SQL strings belong to the metal, not the UI.

Entangled··on Redesigning the smartphone dial pad
Here is a mockup of a dial pad I'd be happy with. Can be easily flipped for lefties.

Entangled··on Cloud DB War: Autonomous Databases
All I want is an ordinary RDBMS with SPAAS (Stored Procedures as a Service) that return a binary blob of tables, nothing else. I don't want noSQL, I don't care about cloud objects, I saw Firebase and didn't like it, I don't want JSON as a result, I don't care if noobs don't know who CODD is, they will learn it the hard way sooner or later.

Oracle is the living god of RDBMS and they should take advantage of that yet they don't. It has nothing to do with AI, ML, NN, or any other word du jour, just plain tables lightning fast.

Entangled··on Js13kGames Winners – JavaScript games with a file size limit of 13KB
I loved 15. Mauja cuz I'm addicted to Tiny Wings kind of games.

Would like to see it ported to iPhone and Android for casual gaming.

Entangled··on What should follow the web?
Let's start with the protocol app:// and build from there.

http:// is for hypertext, app:// is for apps

app://microsoft.com/word should be explicit enough

Entangled··on It’s time to kill the web app
How about using an app:// protocol for compiled apps with security in mind, meaning sandboxed and no filesystem access? Http is for hyper TEXT, not hyper BYTES.

Wasm is a great opportunity to reinvent web apps. Please don't fuck it up.

Entangled··on Building multiplayer games with Socket.io and HTML5 Canvas
Thanks for the info. Good thing about turn-based games is that you send small packets to few players every few seconds, so they're not that intensive in memory/transfer. I hope having a thousand players in a room won't break my piggy bank. Later on I'll venture with chess, checkers and backgammon, all turn-based games.
Entangled··on Building multiplayer games with Socket.io and HTML5 Canvas
Any not so expensive hosting options for sockets-based apps? Heroku? Digital ocean? AWS?

Also, what are the limitations by the hosting provider regarding concurrent connections, data transfer, etc.

I am currently working on a poker app using free Heroku dynos but would like to have a budget in mind for when going live.

Entangled··on Ask HN: What's the next big advance in AI you're looking forward to most?
AI-NET. Specific AI that can communicate with other specialized AIs using a simple protocol to solve specific problems in their field with the help of others.

AIs don't need to know everything but they must know where everything is and must know how to get that info. Sort of a DNS for intelligent repos and APIs to access them. Wolphram Alpha would be one but we need more, like medicine silos, agriculture silos, wikipedia, facebook, etc should have their own silos with AI interfaces.

Then Google AI would help us search for silos of interest.

Entangled··on What have been the greatest intellectual achievements?
AI?
Entangled··on Firefox Multi-Account Containers
I've been doing multiple containers for multiple accounts opening five different browsers (SF, FX, CR, OP, TR). Now I only need Safari for my regular browsing, Firefox for multiple accounts and Opera for free VPN.
Entangled··on Chrome Enterprise
Agree. It should be called Android Enterprise and take the whole OS world by storm with Android everywhere.
Entangled··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
The second coming of WebTV. I am sick of small devices, I want a huge 100" display managed by a touch remote where I can play and work, watch videos, movies, track my cryptos, even code my own apps from it, all from the comfort of a fat-ass recliner.

Entangled··on Why I left Medium and moved back to my own domain
Medium is a blog platform and a news aggregator. I use it mostly for consuming news by using tags of interest. Good luck with that writing your own blog on your own server. Oh, and the daily newsletter is a delightful joy.

Entangled··on The case against Kotlin
Kotlin is here to stay, it's a pleasure to code in it. The same way ObjC gave way to Swift and I also enjoy coding in it. They both are the only languages I use today for any development. I don't care about tail-call-whatever, functional-whatever or monad-whatever, I just care about a nice and clean syntax that gets out of my way to get the job done in less time. The rest will be improved by people way more intelligent than me in whom I trust, backed by two of the biggest players in the development world, Google and Apple.
