Engineering-MD··on Show HN: Factorio Blueprint Visualizer
I like the threat of factory destruction. It adds to the flavour, and makes designing the factory not just about pure optimisation
Engineering-MD··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Depends how much you want to avoid caged hens
Engineering-MD··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Food culture has (in general) moved on in the UK from that period!
Engineering-MD··on Dog Aging Project
Better thought of as an immune modulator than suppressant. Ultimately it’s a blunt tool when we lack more specific agents. Yes, it will have risks including infection, but the benefits may (or may not) outweigh the risks.
Engineering-MD··on $250 remaining of L&D budget – what to spend on?
In your opinion which services are most worthwhile hosting on a rpi? I’m interested in it, but life always gets in the way.
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
I would think it would not lead to a transfer of consciousness and instead just make a copy of you. I recommend black mirror, it deals with one technological change (usually) and shows how it can be dystopian (usually, there are occasional happy endings). Each episode is standalone.
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
Out of interest, what do you think would happen to your sense of subjective experience on sci-fi upload? And secondly have you watched black mirror? In that show they show many great ways there the end of death is just the beginning of eternal techno suffering.
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
That’s is true and a reasonable point. But looking in This thread you can see there has been this reaction from quite a few.
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
I agree, it’s just more about the intent than anything else, like boasting about your amazing new job when someone has recently been made redundant, just before Christmas.
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI O3 breakthrough high score on ARC-AGI-PUB
Can I just say what a dick move it was to do this as a 12 days of Christmas. I mean to be honest I agree with the arguments this isn’t as impressive as my initial impression, but they clearly intended it to be shocking/a show of possible AGI, which is rightly scary.

It feels so insensitive to that right before a major holiday when the likely outcome is a lot of people feeling less secure in their career/job/life.

Thanks again openAI for showing us you don’t give a shit about actual people.

Engineering-MD··on Ask HN: What will happen to social media?
Perhaps we will return to meeting in real life. Physical presence probably has a few decades left before robots are indistinguishable from humans
Engineering-MD··on Undergraduates with family income below $200k will be tuition-free at MIT
In which case you may like how it’s done in the UK. it’s technically debt but in essence works as a graduate tax. The government pays for your education with a loan. You then only pay back 9% of your income over a certain income threshold. You do this until you pay back the loan or 30-40 years have passed. So in practice this is a graduate tax.
Engineering-MD··on Human brain organoid bioprocessors now available to rent for $500 per month
It could be argued that a similar level of caution should be applied to artificial neural networks. I always find the discrepancy in application of ethics between biology and technology to be an interestingly wide gulf.
Engineering-MD··on Ukraine to unleash robot dogs on its front lines
On searching for the mentioned model “bad one” it sounds like it’s provided by a British company “Brit alliance”, although these may be modified robots from another company.
Engineering-MD··on Taking my diabetes treatment into my own hands
But interestingly also a very high genetic factor with 90% of identical twins both having T2DM (which is greater than that of type 1 which if I remember correctly is 40%)
Engineering-MD··on Back to the future: Are hackers the future of amateur radio?
Because they only briefly flirt with ham radio? When you account for time on air rather than total number of connectors, it’s probably still all boring people.
Engineering-MD··on Show HN: Learn a new language by speaking with AI
Yes, It’s important for us to delve further into this topic
Engineering-MD··on OpenAI reports near breakthrough with "reasoning" AI, reveals progress framework

Engineering-MD··on Is America approaching peak tip?
That is nice, and I really resonate with that. But I would be interested to know: would you still tip if you knew they now no longer catered for the broke college student? Are you tipping as a thank you to how they treated your historical self, or an incentive to keep up a good culture? For me I would feel conflicted about tipping and not tipping
Engineering-MD··on Greece introduces the six day work week
Chasing smaller and smaller returns/optimisations because you can, not because you should
Engineering-MD··on EU to greenlight Chat Control tomorrow
Which makes no sense as it does not make any profit as a non profit and relies on donations…
Engineering-MD··on Apple to 'pay' OpenAI for ChatGPT through distribution, not cash
I don’t think OpenAI company structure would allow an acquisition per se, although how much they bend the rules (such as with Microsoft) has not been tested
Engineering-MD··on Viagra improves brain blood flow and could help to prevent dementia
For me having kids has been massive personal growth. In some ways having kids is synergistic with many of life’s goals and personal growth. Career, less so, but I can a more capable human for being a parent.
Engineering-MD··on AI Is a False God
Wait but why is great, but I always thought it ignores sigma curves and diminishing returns which come for all things
Engineering-MD··on London's Evening Standard axes daily print edition
True, although you could always consider cutting a hole in your newspaper and spying through that. Seems to be a favourite of spies.
Engineering-MD··on Yerba mate, from Paraguay to Syria
Do you mean hep a?
Engineering-MD··on Yerba mate, from Paraguay to Syria
I would take what he says with a pinch of salt, as with all things.
Engineering-MD··on Ask HN: Which laptop model you use for coding?
I do, I went from a MacBook to a dell XPS and I just didn’t enjoy using it nearly as much. The hardware is great, and the benefit of the silence of operation is hard to overstate. The software may not gel with you which is the biggest barrier but I like it.
Engineering-MD··on From a lorry driver to Ruby on rails developer at 38
Modal age of death is usually in the 90s. Old is a subjective term. I guess people mean an age associated with frailty. People who die below 76 often die from non frailty associated diseases, and so their lives have been cut short before they got ‘old’.

Of course frailty is also subjective and relative. It’s why everyone seems old compared to their prior self, and yet equally seems young compared to your elders.

Engineering-MD··on Vision can predict dementia 12 years before diagnosis, study finds
Explorative studies are helpful, but as you say then need hypothesis testing in further research.
