Ellipsis753··on Show HN: 128-bit, roughly-ordered, URL-safe UUIDs
If you assume one per ms then timeflake and UUIDv1 both have a 0% chance of collision as they encode the timestamp.

You might go above this rate some of the time though and we might as well strive for perfection.

One of the nice things about UUIDs is that you can just merge data together willy-nilly without worrying about collisions - for example, if you gets bought by Google. You can't really do this with timeflake.

Ellipsis753··on Show HN: 128-bit, roughly-ordered, URL-safe UUIDs
I'd worry a bit about the chance of collisions.

They correctly state you can generate 50 million of them per millisecond with only a one in a billion chance of a collision (per millisecond).

Unfortunately this means the chance of a collision in a year is 99.999999999998% which isn't great!

(I think they've given too many bits to the timestamp.)

Also, the uuid format it creates isn't a valid uuid which is a pity.

If you want to have "only" a one in a billion chance of a collision a year, you can only generate about 300 a millisecond.

Ellipsis753··on Ten year study: No link between violent video games and aggressive behavior
Does anyone have a non-paywall link to the PDF?

It's pretty annoying that so many studies are paywalled.

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: Why do some timestamps on HN have a full stop at the end?
This is my most recent message. Does it have a dot?
Ellipsis753··on Do I need to go to university?
I'm in the UK. 24 years old. Programmer. Did A-levels but not Uni.

It's never been very hard to find jobs, and my pay is above average for the UK (it's £60k).

Programming is pretty easy to teach yourself and it's a super employable field right now. Programmers are in so high a demand no one seems to mind if you don't have any qualifications.

Would things have been better if I'd gone to university instead? Who knows? But it's super possible to be a programmer without going.

Hi. I've recently moved to London, so looking for a new role. I'm currently MakerClub's Chief Technology Officer and a Full-Stack Developer. I provide guidance and expertise as we bring making and programming to children across the UK. I also built the online platform, website and hardware.

I think I'd fit a medium-sized IoT startup pretty well, but definitely open to other things too.

Ellipsis753··on Lots of bugs in 32-bit x86 Linux entry code
Wobbly windows were the main reason I switched to Linux. Been using it for everything ever since... Kind of amazing that could be a "killer app".

Ellipsis753··on The impossible dream of USB-C
I like USB-C and I buy into the dream a lot. Additionally, the fact that I can plug it in either way around to charge my phone is amazing!

The USB-C cable is obviously very capable, it's just a bit of a mess with interoperability. However, given that USB-C requires licencing, I feel like they can probably fix a lot of these issues afterwards by changing what they do and don't allow. (In a way kind of similar to software patches for the licence itself.)

For example, I assume they could start charging more to use older USB A/B, drop some supported USB-C features that are kind of messy and start charging more for devices that lazily only sort of implement bits of the specification.

The old USB shape has been around for 20 years and counting, if the new USB-C shape is around similarly as long, we have plenty of time to get these issues worked out. (This is already going so much better than ipv6 adoption!)

Ellipsis753··on CSS - Level 4 Selectors
Not sure this is what OP is getting at, but CSS is getting a bit bloated and yet is still unable to fulfill many simple tasks without extra divs and/or JavaScript.

With Flexbox we're soon going to have _sort-of_ solved one painful issue in css - lack of vertical centring, but it's amazing it's taken this long and that the solution is still so ugly.

Larger issues with CSS can't really be solved without breaking backwards compatibility (which will never happen). For example, I wish CSS was more modular and perhaps didn't cascade so freely as it does. It's very rare to see an old site where it's possible to modify the CSS without risking breaking random pages.

Ellipsis753··on Do not let your CDN betray you: Use Subresource Integrity
I still don't really understand why we can't just run any files in cache (from other sites) with the same hash.

If I have the sha-256 of an exe file, I'm perfectly happy to run any exe file with the same sha256 simply because collisions don't happen. Why is this different for JavaScript?

If an attacker can inject HTML script tags into your website haven't you already lost?

Ellipsis753··on The likely end of DownThemAll
I'm in the same boat as you.

I use Firefox purely for a large number of quite complex extensions (which have no Chrome equivalent). If these no longer work or ever extension has a similar version in Chrome I guess I'll switch to Chromium.

Then again. Perhaps there will be some kind of long term fork of Firefox before the switch?

Ellipsis753··on Tarsnap exploit bounty
I found the wording a bit strange too. Perhaps mention why and that you can choose a charity to donate it to even if you were from those countries?

Anyway. Hope someone wins. A write-up would make interesting reading.

Almost certainly. It would be tempting just to pre-render this to an HD video otherwise.
Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: What's bad about my CV?
Hello. You might be hell banned. You reply to my message shows up as [dead] and most people won't be able to see it.
Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: What's bad about my CV?
You're right. I wasn't sure how necessary that was (and obviously it's extra time).

But it is needed. I'll rewrite into two CVs.

Thank you.

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: What's bad about my CV?
Thank you. That does help. I didn't really see that before but looking at it now that does all make sense.

I'll try to rewrite it with your suggestions in mind and focusing only on C++ or JavaScript (rather than both).

Thanks.

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: What's bad about my CV?
Sorry. It's fairly generic.

I'm aiming for something backend(ish). Either C(++) or JavaScript/Node.js/PHP on the backend (I feel there's not much more I want to learn with CSS).

All I do at the moment is rearrange the order of skills for a job I'm applying to. Would you're advise be that I should have an independent CV for each type of job I apply for?

Thank you for replying so quickly.

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: Saw a USB stick didn't pick it up
Honestly I'd just plug it in and look through the files. Meh, seems quite unlikely it'll break the computer or infect it (I wouldn't expect Linux to be a big target for something left lying around anyway).

Besides, you can probably find the owner from the files on the USB stick and return it. If I can't find the owner this way I'd probably hand it in somewhere near.

Ellipsis753··on Show HN: Servasm – Literate web server in x86 assembler
Interesting read and I like it. I'll have to read it more on my Desktop. I get a HTTPS error on my android phone however.

You might be missing an intermediate certificate. (Just a heads up.)

Ellipsis753··on An Analysis of Nespresso
You can adjust the amount made from a single pod. You can actually make a full mug from a single pod and it still tastes great (and not watery).
Ellipsis753··on Why do buses bunch?
This is interesting and I like the display.

However, in Firefox (Gentoo 35.0) the buses don't stick to the roads on the turns and seem to go a little slower than intended.

This therefore means that the buses don't bunch at all.

This is an amusing bug as it's pretty much impossible to notice (everything works) but ruins the effect on Firefox.

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: Which Linux/Chrome laptop for resolution?
That looks good but a little bit pricey for what it is to me. Especially as I actively avoid touch screens. Thank you however, it does look like a good laptop.

In the end I got the:

Toshiba CB30-B-104 13-Inch Chromebook

Ellipsis753··on Ask HN: Which Linux/Chrome laptop for resolution?
A little bit general but I got the

Thank you.

Ellipsis753··on “U Tr?”: Abbreviations Used by Early-20th-Century Telegraph Operators
It's strange they never directly tell you what "U Tr?" means.

The table they provide is backwards for decoding this, but it looks like it means: "You there?" as in "Are you there?"

Ellipsis753··on Git in six hundred words
The page is just pure white for about 30 seconds before it loads for me. (Gentoo Firefox on Linux.) I don't know why but all the items on the page are positioned off page with "visibility: hidden".

Anyway, in case the author sees I thought they might want to know. And if it doesn't load for someone here, wait 30 seconds and it probably will.

I can see in the console your fonts are failing to load. Perhaps this is causing the issue?
