EgregiousCube··on This month is the planet’s hottest on record by far – and hottest in 120k years
The Greek wildfires may be a poor example here, as arson is suspected: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/corfu-wildfi... . It's too early to ascribe a cause.
EgregiousCube··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
This is a high value comment - it's got a hook that I sort of mostly get, but follows that up with jargon laden things I don't understand well, and your references gave me a half hour of rabbit-hole learning. I appreciate the casual knowledge you've passed along. Thanks!
EgregiousCube··on Got called to a professor’s office after a complaint his SPARC4 was running slow
Sort of a meta-comment about infosec.exchange, so I expect a few downvotes, but while this was a funny dad joke it took more scanning and reading than it was worth. Mastodon UI's are very dated despite being new. I miss interdepartmental unix pranks!
EgregiousCube··on Reinventing the E.R. for America’s mental-health crisis
I think it has a lot to do with the birth rate. Here's a study from the prior century on the topic - there are a lot of correlated "people doing well" metrics, but when they controlled for fertility only it had the strongest negative correlation with suicide. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1737819/

"Died cleaning his gun" etc, yeah.

The whole copypasta, frequently posted to slashdot back in the day:

It is official; Netcraft now confirms: BSD is dying

One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered BSD community when IDC confirmed that BSD market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming close on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that BSD has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. BSD is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict BSD's future. The hand writing is on the wall: BSD faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for BSD because BSD is dying. Things are looking very bad for BSD. As many of us are already aware, BSD continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.

FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time FreeBSD developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: FreeBSD is dying.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.

All major surveys show that BSD has steadily declined in market share. BSD is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If BSD is to survive at all it will be among OS dilettante dabblers. BSD continues to decay. Nothing short of a cockeyed miracle could save BSD from its fate at this point in time. For all practical purposes, BSD is dead.

Fact: BSD is dying

EgregiousCube··on FedNow Is Live
It lowers the cost of the government performing wide surveillance of financial activity; the fear is that lowering this cost will enable more advanced forms of detection and enforcement that ultimately look and feel like harassment.
EgregiousCube··on Yelp rebuilds corrupted Cassandra cluster using its data streaming architecture
Love reading this, it's a story about how a back of house team got to have an impact on the business in a more immediate way than they usually get to. Data teams have a longer time horizon for when they succeed or fail than the glamorous lives of backend - let alone frontend! - engineering teams, which makes it harder to recognize the wins in the moment.

To any Yelp data engineers who might happen to read - good work, and it's a good testament to the platform you provide.

EgregiousCube··on WhatsApp had a major disruption
I haven't used WhatsApp in ages, and a couple hours ago I got a very persistent scammer trying to get me to talk to them. Probably just a coincidence, but it makes me wonder if this is security related.
EgregiousCube··on Refusing to teach kids math will not improve equity
It sounds like you're in a good spot where the taxes extracted from you go to support a value system that you are in favor of. Given that taxes aren't a choice, and given that value systems vary between people, can you envision a case where somebody with a different value system would be unhappy about where their taxes go?
EgregiousCube··on How does Sonic and Knuckles' “Lock-On Technology” work? (2016)
What continues to blow my mind is the Sega Channel TV service. So many cool things were done with carts.
