EgregiousCube··on Ladybird passes the Apple 90% threshold on web-platform-tests
What does that say?
EgregiousCube··on Gold hits all time high
Exactly - when equities, commodities, prices of goods, crypto, .... are all up, this tells us that the real situation is that currency is down.
EgregiousCube··on The issue of anti-cheat on Linux (2024)
It’s happening! https://www.dualshockers.com/battlefield-6-will-support-keyb...
EgregiousCube··on AI crawlers, fetchers are blowing up websites; Meta, OpenAI are worst offenders
Under what law? It's interesting because these are sites that host content for the purpose of providing it to anonymous network users. ebay won a case against a scraper back in 2000 by claiming that the server load was harming them, but that reasoning was later overturned because it's difficult to say that server load is actual harm. ebay was in the same condition before and after a scrape.

Maybe some civil lawsuit about terms of service? You'd have to prove that the scraper agreed to the terms of service. Perhaps in the future all CAPTCHAs come with a TOS click-through agreement? Or perhaps every free site will have a login wall?

EgregiousCube··on Mastercard deflects blame for NSFW games being taken down
You're comparing a regional debit network to an overarching network that includes lots of different fee structures. The USA has debit networks (STAR, etc) with similar cost structures too - Germany is not unique in this regard.
EgregiousCube··on Hyprland Premium
I'm going to sub because the lead dev is a college kid who's poured his heart and soul into this thing I use every day. It's really just a donation and I think it's good of him to try to monetize somehow.
EgregiousCube··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
The accused is accused of violating federal law, so it's normal that a federal agency would make the arrest. FBI seems to make more sense than DEA or ATF, no?
EgregiousCube··on Librarians are dangerous
I wonder if it's not that people are getting dumber or less able to hold attention; rather, that everyone is being more exposed to lowest common denominator material because of efficient distribution.

Reader's Digest was always there on the shelf at the store and was very commercially successful. Most people who consumed more advanced content ignored it.

EgregiousCube··on CVE program faces swift end after DHS fails to renew contract [fixed]
A bit disingenuous; he also had a career as a soldier.
EgregiousCube··on An image of an archeologist adventurer who wears a hat and uses a bullwhip
To be fair, people who post on Facebook get exactly what they were promised. Users of free products generally don't expect a rev share.
EgregiousCube··on Google will develop Android OS behind closed doors starting next week
They are shutting their app store down, at least for non-first-party devices: https://www.androidpolice.com/amazon-android-app-store-shut-...

EgregiousCube··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
You assert things strongly, but you are not an arbiter of truth about data classification in the federal government - this is certainly an area where discussion can be had and where becoming more informed increases the quality of discussion. Interestingly enough, many of the people in charge of data classification in the federal government were on said Signal thread!

I could assert that you're lying, etc - as you're effectively committing the same sin as the poster who originally got downvoted - but that wouldn't be having a conversation; it'd be a rude refusal to tolerate a conversation. I encourage you to assume good intent and engage instead of hurling accusations at people - even if they're new accounts.

EgregiousCube··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
This is the sort of counterargument I'd have liked to see instead of disagreement-driven downvoting, yes.
EgregiousCube··on DNA evidence says first Americans came from Asia
Science includes activities outside reading papers that slightly disagree, such as testing hypotheses with experiments; hence my comment that the former isn't science in a nutshell. It describes research quite well, which one can argue is a subset of scientific activity.
EgregiousCube··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
It's too bad that this is being downvoted - swiftymon is trying to provide some context. It's useful to the discussion and well sourced. I'd love to read counterarguments rather than have this fade away :)
EgregiousCube··on DNA evidence says first Americans came from Asia
More research than science :)
EgregiousCube··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
There are a lot of bluesky users who really hate Musk and they post a lot whenever he does anything.
EgregiousCube··on Starlink and T-Mobile open satellite texting test to all
This seems like an unfair conspiracy theory. It’s more likely that they are just a big target with historically not enough defense.
EgregiousCube··on Zero-based regulation made Idaho the least regulated state in the US
The incentive structure that they're using makes it much more likely that a good regulation will be kept than a bad one; this isn't a blanket destruction of all regulation, rather a review process that requires agencies to periodically affirm that a regulation is still having positive impact.
EgregiousCube··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS

EgregiousCube··on Unrealized gains taxes are a pointless hassle. Much better ways to tax the rich
Honestly this reads like a paid post for a candidate, quoting a TV show and following it with a candidate endorsement is either astroturf or a good indication that you should think a bit.
EgregiousCube··on X.com refuses to open with Firefox strict tracking protection enabled
Wow, that’s excellent! I missed the news. Really happy to hear this.
EgregiousCube··on X.com refuses to open with Firefox strict tracking protection enabled
No, the problem is Mozilla.

Management has been so bad that Firefox is hard to recommend now. Servo is a great engine but the company behind it isn't earning support and I think it's not going to last. I'll keep using Firefox forks until they don't work, but I won't support Mozilla by using their product directly anymore.

EgregiousCube··on California to impose permanent water restrictions on cities and towns
I'm sure this isn't the intention of their regulation, but water rationing is a great way to encourage people to move to where the water already is.
EgregiousCube··on Tesla owners file class-action alleging repair, parts monopoly

EgregiousCube··on How babies and young children learn to understand language

EgregiousCube··on Instagram Recommends Sexual Videos to Accounts for 13-Year-Olds, Tests Show
It's true, it just used to be behind the scenes available to those who seek it out. Like that skeezy room at the back of the video store that had curtains blocking it off.

IMO the real "problem" here isn't technological, political, or corporate - it's just a slide of social norms toward hyper-permissibility of immodest or bad behavior. The resolution will likely be social as well, and people realizing that kids are getting exposed to smut will likely hasten that. Laws might get passed, corporations might change their policies, but only after the pendulum swings back socially.

EgregiousCube··on DJI ban passes the House and moves on to the Senate
Clearly people of every ilk exist, but my claim is that people like this are irrelevant to the debate around socialized healthcare. Show me an American politician who's run on the platform of openly wanting to hurt the poor because they deserve to be hurt, their electoral victory, and that person's vote against a socialized healthcare initiative. It's not a thing.
EgregiousCube··on DJI ban passes the House and moves on to the Senate
There is a wide gap between not wanting to be responsible for helping the poor and actively wanting the poor to fail. You're confusing the two.
