EdwardDiego··on Why open source rocks – a new SM750 (Silicon Motion GPU) HDMI Driver
NGL, I read the title initially as Why open source rocks? - a new SM750 (Silicon Motion GPU) HDMI Driver

And got excited that you were open sourcing a chip.

EdwardDiego··on European Stagnation Is Real
Wut. America is more of a social democracy more than the main economies of Europe?

Going to need more sources than an out of context series of lines from an Economist graph.

Well the thing is, you've got nukes, so you know...
EdwardDiego··on The Rise and Fall of Agent Civilizations
Because Steve Yegge presumably shared the good stuff he's been smoking of late.

If you really think that's the main cause, I'd be interested in your sources.

I expect their employers to go out of business because their business model is predicated on paying workers as little as possible and not investing in things that improve productivity per worker.

If you think this will lead to large scale unemployment, you're wrong.

It might, however, lead to exploitative employers going out of business, but alternatively, and hopefully, seeing the light and investing in productivity improvements.

Let me put it this way - the USA's (Land Of The Free, and the Criminally Underpaid) unemployment rate is near identical to the Norwegian unemployment rate, so obviously the American should-be-criminal low (well, it would be criminal in a sane society not captured by the owners) minimum wage isn't exactly the magic "everyone gets a job" juice you obviously think it is.

And to prëempt you, yeah yeah, you're "just asking questions" even though you have an incredibly obvious pre-existing belief that you never explicitly identify upfront because it makes you feel clever or whatever the hell wee kick you get out of this attempt at sophistry.

And for some strange reason, the person you're replying to is _not_ one of the highly paid executive remuneration consultancies.

Gee, wonder why they only accept advice from people that tell them to give executives more money?

EdwardDiego··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
So you're comparing China "proper" to Europe "whatever that is" ...?

Not exactly apples and apples mate.

EdwardDiego··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
The US has the same on dairy imports into the US for the same reason.
EdwardDiego··on One corner of China’s internet is insisting that the Tang Dynasty never existed
I spotted the same thing, and there's never a source given. Allegedly his great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather (or 15th great-grandfather for short) was totally Han, the son of the scourge of the Xiongnu - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Guang

A timely reminder that, damn, China is olllldddd.

Your comment sent me to Wikipedia and this caught my eye [0], a Late Shang inscribed rhinoceros rib, which then deepened the wikihole [1], it's funny how even though I know of the Indian rhino and Sumatran rhino, it never occurred to me that they were even more widespread...

What's interesting is that if you read Wikipedia, there are multiple (without sources, mind) sentences going "btw Li Yuan was totally Han via an ancestor 17 generations previously".

So clearly this is rather important to some people.

EdwardDiego··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
Because it was another month, when Delta turned up and killed a bunch of old people. But oh no, it was bad for cafés!
EdwardDiego··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
You don't understand "we were locked down, and therefore, we avoided a bunch of peopled dying"?

Sorry, did I type too fast or something?

EdwardDiego··on US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures
> Except Palestine is not a country.

A super-majority of the UN says you're wrong.

> As of September 2025, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 157 of the 193 member states of the United Nations (UN), or just over 81% of all UN members

Quoted that from Wikipedia because googling it even a little seemed a little hard for you, so happy to help :)

EdwardDiego··on US announces new sanctions on top ICC figures
Why not both? Seriously. The USA's current leadership cabal certainly appears to be dancing to the tune of several corrupt world leaders. Even when they contradict each other.

Trump is threatening to bomb Oman? Trump is talking smack on South Korea and cuddling up to North Korea again?

EdwardDiego··on The National Park Service Is Using Flock. Rangers Are Pissed
Oh, so he's saying he's a reactionary. Oh yep, in previous comments he states that LLMs have a left-wing bias, as does notable leftie (checks notes...) Mark Zuckerberg?!
EdwardDiego··on The National Park Service Is Using Flock. Rangers Are Pissed
> “I fear for the day when a visitor's National Park experience is interrupted by being pulled over and held at gunpoint because a license plate reader misread their plate.”

Yep, doesn't sound pissed off at all mate.

Yeah, normally your career takes a rather... downward trajectory, when you embarrass the Rodina.

My personal bugbear is its usage of "grain" where normally you'd use "granularity", if at all.
EdwardDiego··on My Rules for Using Spreadsheets
A former coworker was previously employed in high finance in London, his entire job was keeping the rickety lattice of interlinked spreadsheets across the company working and alive. People would type in a number in one spreadsheet, and after several hours, another number would appear via the lattice in a more influential spreadsheet.

The company made money, so it worked, but he swears is caused him to start prematurely balding. Maybe a convenient excuse, but also plausible.

I very much agree. But yet some companies (e.g., China's 9/9/6 culture) insist.

EdwardDiego··on Picking berries is my meditation
Manual subsistence labour being your meditation is very much a luxury good.

Our ancestors picked berries to survive, we pick them for quiet time. It's damn good to live in the future.

EdwardDiego··on The Indo-European Family Tree
Quick question for you - did the Proto-Indo-European culture spread out further than, or lesser than, the Greek culture?

Because that difference in expansion, distance, and interaction with other cultures might explain the differences you're incredulous about.

Given Punjabi and Irish Gaelic are both descended from PIE, as is _Greek_ I'm going to say that 4K is plenty. The fact that Greek didn't change so much after Mycenean Greek was first attested in 2K BC doesn't say as much about PIE as it does about the Greeks deciding they liked where they were.

Also, _how_ different is Greek to other languages? Given it's a PIE language also.

Spending 90 hours at work doesn't mean you're spending 90 hours doing useful work. Just ask the Japanese.

Or "death march".
