EastLondonCoder··on Chinese Workers Who Assemble Designer Bags in Italy
Thats an odd way of looking at SD. There is a clear macroeconomic consensus that immigration is good for the economy as a whole, the GDP growth Sweden has enjoyed strongly support this. An SD government would be a threat to the Swedish welfare society.

This is a party started not by right leaning nationalists but by actual nazis. Gustav Ekström, one of the founders of the party was a volunteer in the Waffen-SS in 1941. Yes the party has changed but these are the kinds of people running the party when the current leadership joined.

Its overwhelmingly clear the main reason for the party is to turn Sweden into some sort of white nationalist fantasy where anyone with a brown face is not welcome.

Brilliant recommendations. I would like to add learning redux as soon as possible is a good thing.
EastLondonCoder··on Swedes turn against cashlessness
I also almost always use contactless payments here. But there is one big exception. When paying in a small business such as on off license or small cafe/restaurant I will go out of my way to use cash because I want the business to keep the full margin instead of paying a visa fee.
EastLondonCoder··on Swedes turn against cashlessness
"they want to nationalize all private banking." -

I'm not sure where you got that from. Whats on the cards is to create a central bank based system of payments. I'm personally not in favour of having to pay a fee to VISA every time I make a payment. I would envisage that this would work along side existing payments system.

"trusted to manage financial transactions despite the massive history proving they can" in peacetime yes. Beside that its a common good not under democratic control. Sweden as a state has small but very real risk of being invaded. There is a lot of work in Sweden at the moment to remilitarise the country. For example mandatory conscription has been introduced.

"For example, if only the state was allowed to process financial transactions, we never would have gotten credit/debit cards" - debatable conjecture. Still no one is looking to get rid of payment systems that are currently in place.

"If they had nationalized after this development, we would not have NFC payments or chips in cards" - again debatable conjecture.

"The state is anti-innovation (think about how slowly government infrastructure has developed) and anti-consumer (imagine the DMV in charge of your money). " - I'm not sure how to respond to this but I'll give a try. For an American example you can take a look at NASA, It is general acknowledged that you have something like a 14$ return on every dollar spent. This: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASA_spinoff_technologies does not look like ant invention to me

"This whole notion of "the state knows everything" and "only the state cares about you" seems completely dystopian." Well in a functioning democracy the state has the potential to be serving its citizens. It works fairly well in Scandinavia, but less so in Russia or China.

EastLondonCoder··on Facebook Security Chief Said to Leave After Clashes Over Disinformation
I think that kind psychological profiling you can do with a Facebook profile is not obvious to most people. It’s not even clear to to most people that they are under 24/7 surveillance by using the Facebook app. There has been some raised eyebrows of creepy targeted advertisements, but it’s a different ball game of knowing that there is a company that has profiled you as an individual and then manipulated you with targeted political advertising using your most deepest fears.
EastLondonCoder··on One year of cycling to work
Interesting to see comments about bike commuting in Stockholm and London since I tried it in both cities. Commuting by bike in Stockholm is a breeze even if you are biking in parts of the city with lots of traffic. Its also a beautiful city which adds to the experience.

I have tried to commute by bike in London but its to scary for me. I think it would be fine if you can find a path through residential areas, but for me thats impossible. Biking in the central parts of London I feel that a slight lapse in concentration could end up with a very bad accident.

Very cool! I wonder if a slightly more elaborate tool could help with tracking of mood disorders.
EastLondonCoder··on Bitcoin, I've Been Here Before
So currently most money gets created when a back offers a loan, how and much is decided by the central bank. The thinking behind the current system is that easier access to credit will increase productive investments and grow the economy, hopefully to offset the inflation incurred by the increase in the money supply.

I agree its a quite blunt instrument, things like mortgages for houses doesn't really tend to grow the economy.

But its a hard problem, personally I would like to see some tinkering with helicopter drops

EastLondonCoder··on Bitcoin, I've Been Here Before
I think Satoshi marketed bitcoin as a currency, but the intention was something that more resembles gold than currency.

Bitcoin as a currency does not make sense from a macroeconomic point of view. Whats the incentive of spending something of a fixed resource?

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I prefer monetary policy to be decided by a small cabal of professionals.

EastLondonCoder··on Facebook Will Introduce Ads as Videos Start, a Move Long Resisted
I got rid of my TV in 2003, I'd just lost my job and thought it'd be a good idea to lose a distraction. It worked and was not particularly hard.

Now I did unleash an enormous amount of smugness towards everyone about how good it was to not have a TV. Being snobbish about the choice I made with a side of judgement to other people not having the same preference.

I think a lot of people here do something similar as soon facebook is discussed. And I feel we are missing out on having a conversation about how something as transformative as a personalised mediafeed impacts society because signalling not being part of it gives more cred.

We all know that software companies in a very short time has amassed power never seen before. It doesn't matter if you don't take part because at the end of the day it will affect you anyway.

EastLondonCoder··on Bill Gates buys land in Arizona to build 'smart city'
It’s a very good idea, the restorative effects on taking a break from modern life has been practiced a long time in Scandinavia. Both my brother and my father has tech intensive stressful jobs in healthcare and keeps their minds by hiking, cycling, skiing and kayaking. These types of activities or relationship with nature does have a term called friluftsliv.

Personally I think the effects are similar to meditation when you are on a long hike.

Correct, its also worth noting that the US do have mechanisms in place to transfer funds from surplus areas to deficit areas.
EastLondonCoder··on Review of “Adults in the Room” by Yanis Varoufakis
Yanis describes in The Weak Suffer What They Must? that the situation was very simliar to the subprime crisis in the states. Giving a lot of risky loans that then could be split and re-packaged.

EastLondonCoder··on ClojureScript is the most-used functional language that compiles to JavaScript
Very nicely written, I have to say it sounds very similar to my experience using redux/react. Although there are some things like homoiconocity you don't get writing functional JavaScript I do feel the learning curve is much less steep than ClojureScript.

EastLondonCoder··on Are Your Programmers Working Hard, Or Are They Lazy?
This has been studied quite extensively, for the majority of people productivity plummets if you consistently work more than 8 hours a day. You may be able to cram it for about two weeks but that effort needs to be payed back with more rest if productivity should stay the same.

I moved to London in 2006 and it was £3 then which was at that point the price of a pint. Still 5.50 is quite good.

Nice to see Rasa there. If you live in London and haven't been, go! Indian veg in angel is one of the best value meals london have to offer, 5.50 all you can eat of a selection of south indian curries. Possibly you could add the woodland restaurant on Panton street.

"FTL means leaving the causality light cone, conventional notions of causality, and therefore all of physics:"

While I agree with your conclusion that ftl is equivalent of time travel and breaks causality I think its incorrect to say it breaks all of physics. There are several solutions to general relativity that are valid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_protection_conjectur...

EastLondonCoder··on Developing a Lua VM in JavaScript
Disclaimer, I work on the project. Not so much the vm as the game engine part. The game engine is a Lua api but implemented in the host language. In this case js but we have a obj-c iOS implementation as well. For our use case the bottleneck is not the Lua interpreter but graphics rendering. The system is currently live and you can see it working if you go to www.jackpotjoy.com with an iPad user agent. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer them.
