ENGNR··on Cargo Airships Are Happening
There are mitigations though. Assuming you have sensors in every segment, you could detect the vacuum ahead deteriorating and brake.

Equally, if the train stopped in an emergency, the valves around it could fail safe to open and let the atmosphere back in. The train has to be pressurised anyway so a small delay there isn’t unreasonable

ENGNR··on Ask HN: Is anyone working at least 4 hours daily on an Apple Vision Pro?
You can do all of that with a properly tailored suit.

If it’s expensive you probably don’t want to roll around in the dust, but if you look at images of workers from hundreds of years ago they were essentially wearing suits (trousers, shirt, jacket, hat) most of the time, even for manual labor

Very formal these days though

ENGNR··on Google won't be mandating a strict return-to-office plan
Same! Tech job, my co-founder and I are only a 5 minute drive or bike ride from the office. It’s nice to get dressed and have that separation from home.

I feel like the commute is what people are actually feeling the worst, because it’s unpaid time that they just straight up lose. Being close to the office resolves it for us.

ENGNR··on Mark Zuckerberg: "Ship the App" (2011)
I'm not close to these deals, but my understanding is you have to have some existing connection to the CEO or at least very senior VP's for it to be an actual reality. So I wouldn't feel too bad!
ENGNR··on Forget ChatGPT: why researchers now run small AIs on their laptops
That's new. Previously there was a setting, but they removed it, and it would even throw a warning in settings.json that the property no longer existed.

They must have reintroduced the telemetry setting. I can't remember if I deleted the old one, but my setting on that new value was set to "all" by default.

ENGNR··on Launch HN: CodeViz (YC S24) – Visual maps of your codebase in VS Code
Yep I did see some kind of top level graph, with a few items in it (maybe 5?), but that wasn't very useful. It was also quite small as it was in the left panel of vscode, so nothing of value at that point. This was with a pretty vanilla react/typescript codebase.

Maybe I was supposed to single click one to find out more? I double clicked for what it's worth, and got the message to upgrade. But given that it hadn't done anything useful yet I of course had no reason to proceed. Just early feedback, I'm sure you'll get it all worked out.

ENGNR··on Launch HN: CodeViz (YC S24) – Visual maps of your codebase in VS Code
Doesn't mention a cost or trial period in your post or the website

After installing it, it doesn't even let you see the first thing without signing up for a trial period and even then doesn't mention a cost.

I understand you just launched it, but I look at the free trial and think "what else am I going to find out...", uninstalled for now but hope you find traction.

ENGNR··on What the heck are reverse mapped types?
Is pretty great if these features are constrained to a utility function or library though.

Being able to put your types in as an arg and keep the other parts in sync in the editor without having to write a bunch of boilerplate just to define one-off types. I find it speeds up dev and reduces the amount of application code that needs testing overall.

ENGNR··on US Considers a Rare Antitrust Move: Breaking Up Google
Requiring Chrome and the search widget to be uninstallable on Android in exchange for access to the GMail app is definitely a step too far, straight out of Microsoft's playbook.

At least Android allows sideloading apps though. We know that privacy permissions can be done correctly at the OS/Api level, even web browsers do it. It's crazy that Apple can be complicit in enabling Google's search monopoly and face no repercussions for it's app distribution monopoly.

ENGNR··on 2024 Paris Olympics: No, breaking shouldn't be an Olympic sport
Olympics is boring, it should become the World's Fair once again. More break dancing, more Starcraft II, launch a starship at the height of it all.

ENGNR··on Apple will allow developers access to its NFC technology, avoiding an EU fine
When you use Apple Pay, Apple has agreements with the issuing banks for those cards and they get a % of every transaction you make.

Having to give up monopoly control over NFC API means the banking apps will probably offer tap to pay directly instead, so Apple will lose some profit.

I do think in the long term, this will mean lower merchant fees for customers, as Apple will lose leverage and probably have to reduce instead of continually increase the % they demand from banks.

ENGNR··on Apple will allow developers access to its NFC technology, avoiding an EU fine
Worse how? It just means devs can access the API, if the customer installs their app and consents that that's what they want to happen.

Apple still gets to be the default wallet, which is a huge, huge advantage, plus they make a boatload on the hardware.

ENGNR··on Show HN: Open-sourced Webflow for your own app
I think you're onto something. I'm not sure what you mean by 'components' on the roadmap, but if it's the ability to bring react components back into the editor, and have the designer WYSIWYG modify the props - that's the exact thing we've been saying "suuurely this must exist" for a long time (rant mode enabled).

The key pain for us that I think you're touching on is that "design/dev mode" isn't how teams actually work. Devs do far more design than we think. My experience is that designers do the pretty or complex pieces, while dev does the long tail "boring" designs. Often devs do the screen layouts since nav and routing can get a bit complex. Secondly, designers don't just hand off a design and that's it. The design system gets implemented as components, which have tweaks due to usability/issue reports/further design, and then the designers really want to be taking those components and recomposing them back into sections and screens. Ideally designers would be just setting props like images, text and ids faaaar up the abstraction layers, with dev components being automatically synced back in as they're built and updated.

So definitely think your setup is potentially hitting a sweet spot between dev/design. Just to validate it as as product - plus one for open source with a paid hosted tier for convenience. Devs get to tinker, and designers don't have to think about how to run it.

ENGNR··on Chrome is adding `window.ai` – a Gemini Nano AI model right inside the browser
I would honestly love this, so that users don't even have to think about AI.

- Massively broaden the input for forms because the AI can accept or validate inputs better

- Prefill forms from other known data, at the application level

- Understand files/docs/images before they even go up, if they go up at all

- Provide free text instructions to interact with complex screens/domain models

Using the word AI everywhere is marketing, not dev

ENGNR··on Google begs court for relief from Epic Games' Play Store demands
It depends how you define the market. If there is one market for phone hardware, and a separate market for app stores, then they’re illegally bundling them and using their position in the phone market to anti-competitively win in the app store market.

If you define the App Store as a component of the phone (which Microsoft tried to do and failed with their OS and Internet Explorer) then they’re fine.

ENGNR··on AI is exhausting the power grid
The Helion ideas for fusion are pretty interesting. They put a bunch of energy in using electromagnetics to fuse deuterium, and then (if they can do the next bit) harvest the extra energy out of the magnetic fields on the way out using the same equipment.

It's a different approach than most fusion reactors at least.

ENGNR··on Tesla's FSD – A Useless Technology Demo
How does Tesla FSD fair against the Waymo self driving taxis?

I'm curious about whether self driving is still an impossible task right now, or if it's just a matter of quality between companies - in which case it's possibly a fair bet being made by Telsa execs that they'll bridge the gap given time and money.

ENGNR··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Fair, but we could conceivably have an ecosystem of providers, like ProtonMail or whoever the user feels comfortable with. If it's just Apple we're headed for honeypot
ENGNR··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
> Do you feel like Apple's "independent" auditing is insufficient?

Yeah, pretty much

Also, your grandma might not setup a VM, but it sounds like the off-device processing is essentially stateless, or at most might have a very lightweight session. It seems like the kind of thing one person could setup for their family (with the same tamper-proof signatures, plus physical security), or provide a privacy focused appliance for anyone to just plug into a wall, if they wanted to.

ENGNR··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
Ok I'm calling it. If NVIDIA releases a phone, and allows you to buy the hardware for the off-device processing too, I'll fully ditch Apple in a heartbeat.

I'm quite creeped out that it uses off-device processing for a personal context, and you can't host your own off-device processing, even if you have top of the line Apple silicon hardware (laptop or desktop) that could step in and do the job. Hopefully they announce it in one of the talks over the next few days.

ENGNR··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
True, but there's a difference between

- TLA agency deploys scarce zero days or field ops because you're particularly interesting, vs..

- TLA agency has everything about you in a dragnet, and low level cop in small town searches your data for a laugh because they know you, and leaks it back to your social circle or uses it for commercial advantage

Open code, inspected and used by a large number of users, hosted on hardware you physically control
ENGNR··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
For this reason, I really hope we can self-host our "private cloud" for use with apple devices. That would truly, properly allow end to end privacy. I don't trust Apple given the legislation you've just linked to, both claims obviously can't be correct.
