EFreethought··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
There are a lot of companies that think that chewing people up and spitting them out is something to be proud of.

MBAs usually wind up eating the seed corn at some point.

EFreethought··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
> To them, everyone in tech is just a pawn in their money moving finance games.

Don't they think everyone is a pawn in their money moving games?

EFreethought··on How to create an OS from scratch
If you wish to create an OS from scratch, you must first invent the universe.
EFreethought··on Greenland is a beautiful nightmare
They might think they are serious, but they are not. Illinois would have to agree to it, and Illinois will not.
EFreethought··on How to make sense of any mess
What software can be used to make Critical path/flow diagrams?

In their minds it is a signal of high status.
EFreethought··on Meta’s live demo fails; “AI” recording plays before the actor takes the steps
OT, but thanks for linking to old.reddit.com instead of www.reddit.com. The new interface is an abomination.
EFreethought··on The treasury is expanding the Patriot Act to attack Bitcoin self custody
> Everyone is talking about it.

And they are talking about it very strongly.

EFreethought··on Are people's bosses making them use AI tools?
What a lot of these More Bad Advice pinheads are too stupid to understand is: If you do not need those pesky tech people to make an app for your clients, then your clients do not need you either.
EFreethought··on Uncle Sam shouldn't own Intel stock
> put a lot of MBAs in top leadership positions to make their financial schemes work.

Has it ever worked?

EFreethought··on Texas Instruments’ new plants where Apple will make iPhone chips
What does GSI refer to? Googling did not lead to any obvious results.
EFreethought··on Go is still not good
There are still a LOT of places running old versions of Java, like JDK 8.

Java is great if you stick to a recent version and update on a regular basis. But a lot of companies hate their own developers.

EFreethought··on Is Germany on the brink of banning ad blockers?
The idea that people in an ostensibly communist country are forced to watch ads is ironic.
EFreethought··on Stanford to continue legacy admissions and withdraw from Cal Grants
Some of the American old money came from European old money.
EFreethought··on Providing ChatGPT to the U.S. federal workforce
Is OpenAI making any money? I have read that they are burning money faster than they make it.

I think you are correct: We will see a big price spike in a few years.

EFreethought··on Job-seekers are dodging AI interviewers
There was a brief period after 9/11 when planes were grounded that people realized JIT might not be such a great idea.

Why does society need to learn the same lessons over and over?

EFreethought··on Mezzano, an operating system written in Common Lisp
Why do you think you need to "escape" from Emacs?

Edit: If you are affiliated with the Positron that made the Elisp Repo Kit, then keep making more Elisp packages. I made a package for myself a while back, and erk was the easiest solution. Keep up the good work.

EFreethought··on 6 weeks of Claude Code
Maybe you do today. Will that always be the case? People running Windows do not have as much control over their systems as they should. What does enshittification look like for AI?

Why should I trust any of these AI vendors?

EFreethought··on 6 weeks of Claude Code
> It can, in fact, control your entire computer.

Honestly, that sounds like malware.

EFreethought··on Using Microsoft's New CLI Text Editor on Ubuntu
I think sysadmins should install nano on servers for people to make quick edits. All the commands are along the bottom, so there is no learning curve.
EFreethought··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
Would you be willing to share this tool?
EFreethought··on Tell HN: Help restore the tax deduction for software dev in the US (Section 174)
Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you only deduct part of their salary in the first year, what happens if you have a software developer for several years?

And then what happens after five years if they are still around?

EFreethought··on My AI skeptic friends are all nuts
> You can also make this argument to varying degrees about your internet connection, cloud provider, OS vendor, etc.

True, but I think wanting to avoid yet another dependency is a good thing.

EFreethought··on The Myth of Developer Obsolescence
Customers value quality when quality is available.

If someone in the supply chain before you cares more about something being cheap, then that is all you get.

EFreethought··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
> "using Excel for quick decision making"

Could you expand on that?

EFreethought··on Judge Rules Blanket Search of Cell Tower Data Unconstitutional
I wonder how much of the state of affairs is due to the "enshitification" of law enforcement. I think a lot of towns/cities require officers to give out a minimum number of citations/tickets per month.

If you are told to care about a number, you will care about a number.

EFreethought··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
> when it comes to the deficit that everyone cares about.

The GOP only cares about it when the POTUS is a Democrat.

EFreethought··on An Overwhelmingly Negative and Demoralizing Force
I would say the huge environmental cost is a third problem.
EFreethought··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
There are a lot of companies out there (HP, Intel, Boeing, GM, Xerox) where if you dive into the history, at some point somebody says something to the effect of: "This used to be a great engineering firm until the finance guys took over."
EFreethought··on How many artists' careers did the Beatles kill?
Interesting bit of trivia: The husband later appeared in a couple of episodes of "Star Trek", both the original and DS9:
