DuncanCoffee··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
Anyone writing about apps compatibility should specify if it's with or without the play services
DuncanCoffee··on MiMo v2.6
Is there a "winning"? What are they going to do, train a new model faster? Serious question.
DuncanCoffee··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
Because in agriculture you are absolutely expecting to be able to repair stuff yourself.

I work on a project related to it and was absolutely surprised at how the company gave instructions to the clients to help them fix their machines (stuff I wouldn't be able to do myself).

Having a non-working machine can mean big $$ lost everyday.

DuncanCoffee··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Until a couple of years ago instead of using query parameters I just made GET endpoints with json bodies, it worked perfectly!

I stopped when the new linter told me GET shouldn't have bodies, but I still have some of them in my code.

DuncanCoffee··on Moon (2024)
It's because you have the radius on the denominator (I think)

  def calc_gravity(mass_1: float, mass_2: float, radius: float) -> float:
      G = 6.67408e-11
      return G * mass_1 * mass_2 / radius**2

  earth_mass = 5.972e24
  earth_radius = 6.371e6
  earth_g = calc_gravity(1.0, earth_mass, earth_radius)
  print(f"earth: {earth_g:.2f} m/s^2")

  moon_mass = 7.34767309e22
  moon_radius = 1737.4e3
  moon_g = calc_gravity(1.0, moon_mass, moon_radius)
  print(f"moon: {moon_g:.2f} m/s^2")

  print(f"earth/moon proportion: {(earth_g / moon_g):.2f}")

prints

  earth: 9.82 m/s^2
  moon: 1.62 m/s^2
  earth/moon proportion: 6.04
DuncanCoffee··on I ran Photoshop on a £0.60 computer chip

DuncanCoffee··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold
I'd like my next phone to be a flip one. But really what I want is a Linux phone.
DuncanCoffee··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
I have a dream, to ban targeted advertising globally. It would solve many problems and possibly, cherry on top, kill some corporations
DuncanCoffee··on The Red Strings Club
999 has something similar, maybe only in its "new" version. You can see if you still have something to unlock in a scene, and start from that one.

DuncanCoffee··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Crossing my fingers for an open source MMO mouse. While many linux solutions exists which allow you to use the side buttons macro on board, and sometimes to create new ones, Corsair had a feature where the side buttons template switched based on the foreground window, I loved always having the correct one for firefox, intellij and even games.
DuncanCoffee··on Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Mine hates the P button. Sometimes it will not react to it. Sometimes It wil repppeat it two or three times. But I love the aesthetic of the pastel colors, the volume sphere is cool and the typing feeling is great. I dropped my keychron k2 and it stopped working via usb, but charging still works. If I were able to fix it maybe (maybe) I'd switch back to it, in the end I prefer having a reliable keyboard.

DuncanCoffee··on KOReader
I use it because it supports opds and old Android versions (I have an old Android eBook reader). I host my books on calibre web and never need to do anything beside opening the opds section on koreader and picking what to read.
DuncanCoffee··on The lost joy of music piracy
I remember Emule, with its IRC client we discovered by chance, or BearShare, which had a whole social network, you could search for people based on age, country and whatever. We used to get together at a friend's house because he had decent internet, in front of a CRT monitor, chatting with people around Europe with our broken english.

Music piracy also changed the course of my life, thanks to a DVD full of music I discovered my passion for metal, picked up the electric guitar, met a lot of friends, partners and had a lot of fun (I could say it was the best time of my life, but that was just because I was younger and without worries ;)

I also had no money to spend on CDs, nowadays I'm often thinking about buying a blu-ray player to buy the albums and movies I love... but I don't want them to collect dust, so I'm waiting for an excuse...

I do have a Sony Walkman (the new one) with a nice collection of music, but with spotify (which I want to replace with Qobuz) it's not getting used. I'm also selfhosting NaviDrome.

The github cli has a command to query commits with a sorting asc/desc flag

https://cli.github.com/manual/gh_search_commits

here's the docs with more syntax using the "before x date"

https://docs.github.com/en/search-github/searching-on-github...

there's also an advanced search page, but it does not support commits when filtering with dates

https://github.com/search/advanced

or you can bisect the date in the search widget, this is the first day with a commit

DuncanCoffee··on LineageOS Statistics
I remember on xda with my Galaxy S Plus i9001 [1], we had:

- dual boot [2]

- Ubuntu touch [3]

- different kernels with various optimizations, overclocking, etc

- an absurd amount of ROMs, aside from CyanogenMod and LineagesOS there was ParanoidAndroid, Carbon, JellyBean, AICP, plus all the ROMs made specifically by users for this phone

- the latest linux kernel, somebody just compiled it for AOSP, I think it was version 3 or 4 against 2, which was the standard for every other phone, it ended up on some tech news website

I think It was a really great modding scene and a lot of people learnt stuff from that. Mainly by bricking their phones and having to fix them.

DuncanCoffee··on Neutron scattering explains why gluten-free pasta falls apart (2025)
Pasta is the only thing I don't miss.

I recently found some pasta made with 100% red lentils, rice or peas, which is really good, I can gladly offer it to people.

They cost a premium but the state gives us around 100€ a month to spend, and I don't eat that much gluten free stuff. Pizza on the other hand makes me sad ;(

DuncanCoffee··on Meta in row after workers who saw smart glasses users having sex lose jobs
I once read the manual of one of those small floor cleaning robots (Ecovacs Deebot U2 pro), and it basically said that by using it you were giving them a right to take pictures and send them to a remote server (to analyze issues or something like that)

DuncanCoffee··on Arch Linux Now Has a Bit-for-Bit Reproducible Docker Image

DuncanCoffee··on YouTube starts showing 90-second unskippable ads to TV viewers
I feel strongly about advertising. Long before streaming, my parents used to leave the ads on in between programs, and it always made me mad. I think my ADD comes into play, the idea of voluntarily watching them feels really strange.

I also wonder how the world would change if we made targeted advertising illegal. One can dream...

DuncanCoffee··on The beauty and terror of modding Windows
Last week I added to my dolphin toolbar the "Show Hidden Files" button so it was always shown, my only issue was that it was a really long because of its text. "But wait!" I thought, "This is not windows, I'm sure I can change it!". Lo and behold, my button now says "Hidden" and it's as short as I want it, just by editing the normal settings, no mods required.
DuncanCoffee··on Keybee: A Keyboard Designed for Smartphones

DuncanCoffee··on Show HN: 3D Mahjong, Built in CSS
Nice! Wish the supported rotation was bigger, maybe +- 90 instead of only 90 deg?
DuncanCoffee··on Ask HN: What recent UX changes make no sense to you?
I installed stylish for Firefox and sometimes use some custom CSS to enlarge the body. I recently did it for chatgpt, on a 32" having the main content filling 1/4 of the display is ridiculous
