DugFin··on Crowdfunding to Solve Apple's Biggest Product Problem... Tangled Headphones
The hard drive itself contains comparatively huge neodymium permanent magnets. Those tiny magnets on the headphones will not affect the hard drive.

Mmmmm..... as someone who works for a huge school district with hundreds of schools with students running the gamut from poorest of the poor to richest of the rich, I can tell you they didn't LEARN this behavior from their parents. Rather, they have never been taught to NOT behave like that. Even those with decent parents will sometimes act like horrid little turds. The natural state of the 12-13 year old Middle School Child is that of a vicious, immoral monster. Most will eventually mature into normal, empathetic humans, but at that age, they're ALL terrible.

I neither feel compassion nor hate for them. I detest them for their behavior, and think what they need is some sort of long, unpleasant punishment (e.g. grounded for 4 weeks, during which they clean out the Augean stable) but this is not worthy of any permanent judgement.

DugFin··on Why Bad Jobs-or No Jobs-Happen to Good Workers
It's a little more complicated than that. The pig, in this case, is usually a piglet, which is roughly the same size and shape as a cat, and the trick is to show the customer/mark a real piglet being put in a bag, and then use sleight of hand to switch bags and hand him one with the cat in it, with the strong admonition not to open the bag before getting home lest the "pig" get out.

"my data" implies ownership in this context. The more accurate phrase for what you appear to be trying to say would be "data about me".

>The correct conception is that it could be sold and the Market Economics Fairy has predicted that it will be sold as soon as a willing buyer and willing seller agree on a price.

Mmmmm... unfortunately, I think YOU'RE the one with the strawman argument here. The misconception that he's talking about is the notion that "the purpose of collecting your personal data is to sell it to the highest bidder". That IS a misconception. The purpose of collecting user data is to rent out the aggregate value of it to advertisers. The fact that the collector might someday be forced into receivership and the user data may end up on the auction block as part of their assets is not actually relevant, because a purchaser of such is ALSO not interested in selling the data for profit, but rather collecting rent on the aggregate value of the data from advertisers.

DugFin··on Satellite killed by trajectory patent
> I should add that, yes, SES Americom may have committed insurance fraud if they didn't disclose to their insurance company that the satellite was recoverable for $50M(the cost of dropping the lawsuit against Boeing)

I'm pretty sure that insurance companies can't consider the estimated cost of a civil suit as a fungible asset like that. They could no more insist that SES comply if Boeing had asked them to kill Boeing's mother in exchange for a trajectory license. After all, it costs less than $50M to kill someone.

The same way you know he's not at his desk when you type that useless "Hi": you don't get a reply. How long do you wait after typing a useless "Hi"? Wait that same amount of time after typing your relevant question.

>If IM is specifically a way to get you immediately, start blacklisting people who can't get to the point and waste your time and have they go through email.

But of course they won't use email, they need the answer NOW. No, they'll come over to your desk and start tugging on your shirtsleeve.

DugFin··on One hiring filter that works
Well, you never can tell. When someone says they've found a novel test for weeding out bad applicants, that sounds interesting. When the test is described with a handwave as an interesting puzzle that the best applicants leap at the chance of solving before reading the rest of the interview.... and then you don't even give us the puzzle, but rather launch back into the HR aspect... well, that just seems cruel. It's like reading a murder mystery where the detective details how he figured out who the murderer is, and then never tells anyone. From my authoritative position as a random anonymous internet jerk, I assert that if you allude to a puzzle, you ought to at least include it.

I am apparently puzzle obsessed today. Slow day at work.

DugFin··on One hiring filter that works
Yes, this is a bit annoying. First he relates a not entirely interesting story about his HR problem, then says he solved it by including an interesting puzzle. OK, cool story bro, NOW WHERE'S MY PUZZLE?!?!? I'm not looking for a job, or looking to hire, but like most Hacker News readers I like puzzles. Now I'm angry and have to find a puzzle somewhere else.
