DoneWithAllThat··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
Feel free to look up the percentage of the CA tax base by 50th, 90th, 95th, 99th and 99.9th percentiles. The myth that billionaires don’t pay their fair share is just that - a myth. A lot of lower income people don’t pay any tax at all and have their state services entirely subsidized by the rest, the vast majority of which is paid by the richest 5%. Every time I see a call to tax the billionaires I know I’m hearing from a fool too partisan to look at really simple to understand numbers.
DoneWithAllThat··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I canceled almost all streaming services this year and kept YouTube Premium, and honestly it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Watching costs spiral out of control of just absolutely garbage is insane to witness. I cannot imagine spending hundreds of dollars a year to watch __any__ of the what is largely low effort, low budget trash barely a step beyond the crappiest reality TV. And for the rare diamond in the rough I can almost buy those separately, à la carte, and not have to give a crap when it canceled after a singe season.

I used to sort of scoff at the idea of streaming services being a bad deal, now I can’t even imagine paying for them. They’re so awful. They make me wish we had cable still!

DoneWithAllThat··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
This is a level of cope even I wouldn’t have thought reachable.
DoneWithAllThat··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Hoka is big in the running market but that’s basically all. Same with New Balance. I think where Hoka got lucky was with the explosion of popularity of running and Nike failing to understand their need to offer a fashion running product not just a performance running product. Hoka did and reaped massive rewards as a result.
DoneWithAllThat··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
There’s sci fi novels that deal with it in just these terms. Like some folks with head out on a .99c acceleration ship and be like “okay we’ll be there in fifteen thousand years (original reference frame time)” and that’s just the scale at which the story unfolds. You just accept that when you leave on these trips that if you ever come back now it’s tens of thousands of years in the future there. Nbd
DoneWithAllThat··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
No. It is not and to claim otherwise is hyperbole. The key difference is police stopping and/or questioning people en masse without reasonable suspicion is in fact illegal unless under extreme circumstances. Simply noting everyone’s license plate is wholly legal, and more importantly for this conversation, is drastically less intrusive and qualitatively different from a so-called dragnet. You don’t get to just conflate the two scenarios to better fit your personal preferences of what is or is not legal.
DoneWithAllThat··on I think the military commissary's freezers were hacked
I mean you don’t have to go too many layers deep here. A military running on its stomach is a truism known for centuries, and if you wanted to use cyber warfare to attack a military’s food supplies this is one of the few avenues available to you (the other being logistics).
DoneWithAllThat··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
More correct; we’ll spend a trillion dollars giving free things to people too lazy, addicted or mentally unwell to support themselves, but paying for mental hospitals and police is a bridge too far.
DoneWithAllThat··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
I’m utterly baffled what the author is talking about with regards to “toxic” output. While I agree Claude’s prose is a mess right now, he never explains what he’s talking about when he calls it toxic.
DoneWithAllThat··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
It is 100% deranged nonsense. These people have absolutely lost their minds.
DoneWithAllThat··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
I know (and understand why) a lot of people cheer the EU’s increasingly vast regulatory environment as being “pro consumer” but I’m really tired of said regulations being inflicted on the rest of the world. If this is what Europeans want for themselves that’s fine. But I no more want their regulations to be the de facto world’s any more than I want China’s.
DoneWithAllThat··on How Hollywood stopped making movies in Hollywood
I absolutely don’t want to imply there’s any one reason that he led us to where we are. This comment isn’t to try to undercut or malign some great data and investigation. But an article on this topic that literally does not include the word union in the entire text is not painting a full picture.

You can fairly point out that unions still exist in Georgia, and that the UK and other European locations have robust worker protections - this isn’t a situation of union work vs. non-union work. But the extent to which unions in California have a stranglehold on the movie industry is absolutely part of the story here.

DoneWithAllThat··on Elevators
Having gone to many large furry cons(notoriously brutal on the elevators due to how much floor-to-floor traffic there is compared to other usage) I’ve seen these algos basically completely fail to adapt to unusual patterns. I once spent over half an hour on checkout day, in a hotel with 8 banks, to even have a car stop on our floor at all. Can’t really blame the algo for such a unique situation and at the end of the day a saturated system is a saturated system and nothing can be done to make it fast, but it’s always interesting to witness when a system is completely unable to accommodate a demand like that.

(In the example above we gave up and decided it was cardio time, five laps up and down 14 flights to escape with all our luggage.)

DoneWithAllThat··on Flock Credibility Lost as It Repeatedly Lies to City Councils, Police, & Public
The idea that surveillance undermines high trust societies seems insane to me. Widespread petty crime, lack of shared cultural norms and traditions, lacking of missing social reinforcement of expectations of a society - those are what prevent high trust societies from forming. I consider those things a much worse problem then Flock cameras.

It’s Solovair, not Solvair.

Also if you want legit ones, including vintage, check out the UK Boot Company in Camden Town.

DoneWithAllThat··on 30-year sentence for transporting zines is a five-alarm fire for free speech
It’s not “alleged” that one of the terrorists shot an officer in the neck. It was proven in court that he did and he was convicted for it.
DoneWithAllThat··on I admire Fabrice Bellard. He is almost certainly a better overall programmer
Aside, this is why I’m skeptical of the skepticism of the “Great Man” theory of history. Most people scoffing at it have no idea the individual impact that great men and women have on the world. You can both recognize that we all stand on the shoulders of giants and that such giants do exist as individuals (more often than not). Where the giants are collaborative efforts it often takes only minimal digging before you find there’s one person at the core of that group’s effort.
DoneWithAllThat··on Report on an Unidentified Space Station – J.G. Ballard (1982)
I mean that author is JG Ballard, he’s a legend with many classic works. There’s like at least two or three dozen articles, short story collections and novels of his that are worth reading. He’s one of the top dystopian fiction writers of all time.

Random aside: there’s a restaurant in San Diego on the SAN flight path with a split flap display over the bar. Every time a flight passes over it updates to show flight number and departure airport. It’s quite neat.
DoneWithAllThat··on Show HN: Hallucinate – Massively Multiplayer Online Rave
Aside: I’m not sure how many people realize how big DJ events are in VRChat, especially amongst furries. The virtual furry con Furality is coming up for example and the dances there are huge, thousands of simultaneous attendees. Worlds for events will have full DMX lighting control and sophisticated audio setups.

DJs will often do live mixing as well, it’s not just pressing play on pre-recorded sets, while wearing their VR gear. Recently an event was fully synchronized between an RL version and VR version, complete with integrated lighting setup (the same DMX signals were controlling both RL event space and VR world lighting simultaneously).

Every weekend there’s dozens of huge rave/DJ events going on 24 hours a day mostly be EU and US organizers, although Japan goes hard too (their virtual cons are mind-boggling huge and have major corporate sponsors).

DoneWithAllThat··on Private equity bought America's essential services
It was absolutely actionable and implemented as policy for decades, what are you even talking about? Your phrasing pretends this isn’t exactly how antitrust enforcement worked before the much more recent approach began.
DoneWithAllThat··on Private Equity Bought America's Essential Services
Yet there is no evidence of this happening in any industry or area where PE has become the dominant player. Why not? What you’re saying is nice economic theory but it’s clearly not happening.
DoneWithAllThat··on Uber, Lyft drivers in Massachusetts form first US ride-share union
Why is an anodyne factual claim an “extraordinary claim”? What makes that particular claim extraordinary? They didn’t claim to have discovered perpetual motion or something you can’t prove or disprove yourself, just shared a historical fact you can easily just check up on if you choose not to believe them.

DoneWithAllThat··on US employers spend more than $1.5B a year to fight labor unions, report finds
If you think unions fight exclusively for “a fair salary” you are not engaging with reality.
DoneWithAllThat··on Photoshop's challenges with focus, pt. 2
The whole pattern of considering an input field being blank or having an invalid value while still focused causing an error indicator of any kind to appear is surprisingly infuriating to me.

Like it’s actively frustrating to focus a field like a phone number entry and already the field is red and says something like “must be a valid phone number”. Yes I know that! I’m trying to enter one! Stop drawing my attention to useless information!

Displaying some kind of error if I focus away and the input is invalid or blank is marginally better (and I can see how in some cases might be a better choice, even), and displaying an error “on submit” (for some definition of submit) seems utterly reasonable. But before the user even has a chance to enter a valid value is just a good way to piss them off.
