DonCullen··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (March 2023)
Location: McMinnville, Oregon

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: If it's to Portland or Salem or the areas around those, yes, otherwise no.

Technologies: PHP, Ruby, NodeJS, MySQL, JS (jQuery, VueJS), CSS (either vanilla or Tailwind), AWS, Docker, Git

Resume: https://linkedin.com/in/doncullen

Email: doncullen@gmail.com

Website: https://doncullen.net

NOTE: I'm profoundly deaf and my native language is American Sign Language. I'm however fluent in written English so I'm able to communicate in any non-verbal channel. If verbal communication is necessary, it's easy (and free) for me to bring in virtual interpreter to support with the call. Due to being deaf, it's been incredibly challenging for me to find a job in where the employer is comfortable with me being deaf. The company I work for (ExitGuide) ran out of funds and wasn't able to secure further investments, so as a result I was given notice that April 7th is my last day of work at the company. I'm seriously anxious and worried because I'm a single dad raising two kids aged 10 and 8 on his own. I'm okay until the end of May thanks to savings and will try to stretch it with help of unemployment benefits, then beyond that, I don't know. I'm not posting that sob story to guilt trip others into hiring me (although I wouldn't object to a solid job), I only mention it because I sincerely would welcome advice and tips from those who have been in my position before, so please feel free to email them my way.

DonCullen··on Show HN: Get conversational practice in over 20 languages by talking to an AI
As I’m completely deaf and don’t really use my voice, I communicate via ASL and via written English. This looks like a great tool but falls short in allowing the non-verbal to type to converse instead of speaking.
DonCullen··on Illegally placed concrete blocks have taken over public parking in Seattle
Yes you can. I used to be a homeowner. Even if the area past the sidewalk wasn’t my property, I was expected to keep it reasonably maintained.

My suggestion: If debris was left in front of my property irrespective of whether it was within my property or not, I’d get a notice to rectify. If I didn’t within a reasonable time frame, the city would rectify it for me and send me the bill. Failure to pay the bill within six months would simply result in it being folded into the property taxes. Consequences for not paying taxes don’t need explanation at this point. Very effective strategy. Not my fault someone dumped something in front of the house, but how to track who did it? Easier to shift it onto the property owner.

In my case I would simply put up security cameras that are clear enough to pick up license plates. The city would be only too happy to pass on the bill to the vehicle owner of whoever dropped off the crap.

DonCullen··on Webcams aren't good enough
Nearly $500. Oof.
DonCullen··on Ask HN: What would you do with $5k/mo basic income for rest of life?
Start a business. Until then, it’s debt management, making ends meet, and hopefully get enough handle on finances to be able to sufficiently save/invest for retirement. Survival vs thriving, pretty much.
DonCullen··on Rescuing Economics from Neoliberalism
I see the term liberalism being bandied about when talking about deregulation. I’m not very familiar with politics, but that seems to be something more familiar to the conservatives (republicans), than the liberals; I’m not very comfortable with the attempt to pin deregulation and the rest of it onto the liberals. Enron for instance; http://www.economist.com/node/938154 — shows it as something more in tune to the conservatives. Even in the present USA political climate, the conservatives continue to push for deregulation. I guess what I’m saying is that it reads to me as attempting to pass the buck to the liberals when it actually belongs elsewhere.
DonCullen··on The Road to Learn React.js – Build Hacker News App
Paywalled. Not saying it's not a good resource, just putting that out there so others are aware.
DonCullen··on Ask HN: What's a good developer's resume look like?
It's a pity LinkedIn labs killed that.

DonCullen··on I Found Myself Accused of Stealing Code from WordPress
I'm not someone who'd know enough to be able to discuss this in detail. But in the linked post, Kal Tol mentions "The WordPress GPL Rich Text component in question, is actually a wrapper around another Rich Text component named ZSSRichTextEditor which is licensed MIT. In retrospect it would have been easier to use it directly."

So it appears that although Wordpress is using GPL, the component that Wordpress based their wrapper on is using a MIT license; so it would seem there is a flexibility in being able to use either the GPL or MIT license.

What I'm basically seeing based on Kol's article is:

1. MIT created ZSSRichTextEditor, and distributed it using MIT license. (see: https://github.com/nnhubbard/ZSSRichTextEditor/blob/master/L...)

2. Wordpress then created a wrapper for ZSSRichTextEditor, and subsequently had it covered by GPL instead of MIT. (see: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Editor-iOS/blo...)

3. Kol then took that stuff, implemented React, and re-applied MIT license to it, which whether intentional or not, was what the original license was.

That being said, it's all open source and in the public domain. There's no theft here if it's was freely distributed. Kol even took it one step further (as he should), and gave proper credit where due -- not only within the project, but on social media.

DonCullen··on Browser Benchmark Battle October 2016: Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Edge
Would have been good to see Safari and Opera in the assessment too.
