It really was a scam.
On the flip-side, I've done some of the most horrible things possible and screwed up my 30-disk ZFS array a number of times and I've never lost data. I doubt btrfs could recover from anything I've done to break my ZFS pool.
Overall I think it's a huge shame that it was determined that the CDDL was incompatible with the GPL, because it wasn't intentional, and we would be in a completely different spot for storage otherwise.
A zero-ruleset (if you're not looking at actual pattern-matching or IDS functionality) deployment of Suri is surprisingly lightweight and performant, and it's also easy to roll rules for your custom decoders as well if you want to actually alert on certain things instead of just doing straight decoding and dumping to JSON
They took the time to do a bunch of hand-holding on the mailing list, and worked with me until the driver, along with some minor restructuring to how things were handled with external RTCs, were working and merged.
I use it pretty-much exclusively on my (currently 8) ST variants. It’s a much nicer desktop experience, and brings all sorts of cool features to the table such as (some level of) FAT32 support. It’s also been ported to a crazy list of M68K systems including the Apple Lisa.
Development is still very active, and things are being improved and added all the time.
