DomKM··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2019)
EmbraerX Beacon | Senior Frontend Engineer (React & React Native); Senior Backend Engineer (Clojure) | REMOTE (but, for legal reasons, US or Brazil only)

Embraer, the third largest producer of civil aircraft, is hiring. We’re building https://beacon.works, a tool for airlines and mechanics to manage unscheduled aircraft maintenance. This has the potential to be a very high-value product for the aviation industry and could make air travel much better for everyone.

We have a Clojure backend, multiple (functional JS) React and React Native frontends, and a GraphQL API. Our engineering team is small but very experienced, passionate, and kind. We’re looking for a few more very experienced engineers to fill out the initial internal engineering team.

Location: Remote (but must be able to legally work and reside in the US or Brazil)

Tech: React, React Native, GraphQL, Clojure, Postgres, AWS/GCP

Apply: Please email your resume to dom at beacon dot works (principals only, no recruiters or agencies)

DomKM··on Presenting the Most Over-Engineered Blog Ever
Great stuff!

You're correct about it being sort of awkward at first when you are figuring out how to structure an isomorphic applications. It gets even weirder when you only use JavaScript as a compilation target.

I created an example isomorphic Clojure and ClojureScript application (https://github.com/domkm/omelette) and wrote about how it works (http://domkm.com/posts/2014-06-15-isomorphic-clojure-1/). It was an interesting experience. I wouldn't recommend it for production quite yet but I'm looking forward (and working toward) the day when we can easily deploy isomorphic applications that are not written in JavaScript.

DomKM··on A useful Caps Lock key
Great post but it's over a year old. Shouldn't it be labeled as such?
DomKM··on Clochure — A Better Clojure
I think everyone comes up with some sort of alternative whitespace syntax when they first see a Lisp. I know I did. Unfortunately, you lose Lisp's most powerful property--homoiconicity.

DomKM··on How Dev Bootcamp Is Transforming Education To Focus On “Extreme Employability”
As am I. (We're both DBC grads.)
DomKM··on Catalyst: a new front-end developer training program
The Phillips Bros. (Tony & Marcus) are fantastic. I can't wait to see the front-end engineers this course produces.

If you're looking into an accelerated development training course and are confused by the many courses similar to Dev Bootcamp, Catalyst seems like the best option for front-end development. I'd wager that starting salaries of Catalyst grads will confirm this.

DomKM··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
Thanks for the info.
DomKM··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
Could you explain this? This chart* would suggest that, while LTE bands are shared between the CDMA model and the non-North America GSM model, none of the models are both GSM and CDMA capable and therefore are not "worldphone capable". I would love to be wrong about this so please elucidate the situation if you are able.

DomKM··on iPhone 5

Why aren't all bandwidths supported by a single GSM model? It seems odd that Apple would create one CDMA model and 2 GSM models, but I'm sure there's a technical/financial reason for that decision. Does anyone know what it is?

Please don't actually call this GitLaw. A better name conversion would be LawHub since most lawyers have no idea what Git is.
DomKM··on Facebook Co-Founder Gives Up U.S. Citizenship
That's not accurate. SS returns don't scale directly with payments. The more money you make the less you get back from SS (percentage-wise). There are also some other rules regarding marriage. It's redistribution of wealth and is not simply money back in direct relation to what you pay. (I am not taking any ethical or political stance on wealth redistribution. I am just noting that the previous description of SS is not accurate.)
DomKM··on Startups Court Dev Bootcamp’s Ruby Grads, 88% Have Offers At Average Of $79K
Not everyone is looking to become a computer scientist. Some people just want to make things. Musicians don't need to know every little detail about how their instruments are made. Painters don't need to know the process by which canvas is produced. Why should beginner programmers need to know everything that underlies their craft?
