DisruptiveDave··on When Adolescents Give Up Pot, Their Cognition Quickly Improves
It's funny because all it has ever done for me is the opposite. I'm a pretty energetic dude and weed has always made me want to get out and move, go and play a pickup game or something. It has also brought a different type of focus on any activity I'm doing.

I see a lot of pretty silly takes in this thread that weed automatically makes you happy with boredom somehow, and that apparently leads to a bunch of people sitting on couches zoned out who would have otherwise, with that "bored" time, gone out and learned juggling. Sounds like some grandma's opinion from the 40s.

DisruptiveDave··on Growing Our SaaS to $1M+ ARR: 7 People, 3 Years, No VC Money
That's likely for the top, most obvious, biggest keywords. Google Ads is very winnable if you're creative. Skip the obvious keywords and find other inroads. It can (and has) work for "small" companies not looking to brute force with deep pockets.
DisruptiveDave··on Alex Garland’s cult novel The Beach, 20 years on
"Definite" is boring and lazy to some (like me). Giving the audience enough space for interpretation is exciting to some (like me). It's ok, not everybody has to like the same thing.

SPOILERS DON'T READ THIS!!!

Yes, there are plenty. Now we can debate perception all day, but I think this sampling is enough to pique interest..from what I can remember:

we don't know caleb's history

he has a big, unexplained scar on his back

there is a lot of focus / talk about iterations of the AI

caleb is the one locked in an observation room when he has talks with ava

the cutting himself scene is...odd and unnatural

he never, ever gets drunk

there's a weird scene towards the end where nathan refuses a drink from caleb and goes out his way to make him take a sip and asks how it tastes (he does not answer)

the conversations btw nathan and caleb are not exactly natural, in that nathan consistently prods caleb to provide more in depth/opinionated answers and not be so technical

added: wouldn't the best test of an AI be to give the AI freedom and see if it recognizes itself as AI?

DisruptiveDave··on FanDuel not honoring bet that would have paid over $82,000 due to line error
> as humans, we understand and allow for the possibilities of mistakes.

Yes, but corporations aren't humans. If the mistake went the other way, it likely wouldn't matter. The human would have to deal with it. I say give him the $80k+ and learn to deal with your mistakes.

Have you asked yourself if everything you see in the movie is as presented? SPOILER: In other words, are the people people and the AI AI? (That's the wow.)

DisruptiveDave··on Los Angeles to Use Body Scanners at Transit Hubs
What about knives? Vehicles? Rocks? This is a slippery ass slope. I'm not a gun guy, but I am wise enough to know that there is ZERO logic behind believing "they'll only regulate this, not that."
DisruptiveDave··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying?
Flew a lot for work. Then took a real dodgy flight from Vegas to NYC in 2012 [0] that was as close to crashing as most people have come. When the plane took off I heard noises that I just knew were not good. Ever since then I've found myself a bit anxious when flying. Nobody would ever notice by looking at me, and it feels weird to admit, but every flight I'm hyper sensitive to noises and sudden movements, especially during take off. Know how I get over it? I keep flying. I keep paying attention to those noises/movements and my reactions. It's all in my head so my aim is to win the battle on those grounds.

DisruptiveDave··on Why I’m Using a Flip Phone
I think the challenge that people like myself see in these phones is captured in at least half of the actions you listed. They can be categorized under "my phone helps me avoid spending time with myself and whatever my immediate surroundings are presenting to me." Perhaps my biggest beef with phones is most people's instinct to avoid any slight dis-ease or innocent boredom by throwing up a screen filled with (often) nonsense. That's a real problem that will have negative impact downstream.

Boredom is good. Waiting is good. Not having what you want every second of the day is good.

DisruptiveDave··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
perceived incremental improvement. in golf especially, it's way easier to blame the equipment than yourself. doesn't matter the actual result. it just feels like you're making a move towards progression when you change your tools.
DisruptiveDave··on Marketing Firm Exactis Leaked a Personal Info Database with 340M Records
There is logic at play here, even if you disagree with the approach behind executing it. It's pretty simple psychology that when your neighbor gets robbed it "hits home" with you more than hearing about nameless people on the news suffering the same fate.
DisruptiveDave··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
I'm hoping this is sarcasm. If not, I don't need the government assigning me work to "exercise other parts of my brain" thanks.
DisruptiveDave··on Show HN: Shotsnapp – Create beautiful device mockup presentation
No, not just click baits. Pop-ups, chats, modals, interstitials, recapture emails, drip campaigns, ads, and so on. They work. In many cases. Don't ever listen to what consumers "say" they want if their actions cast a different vote.

Now your question is getting to the heart of things. Crappy sites just throw all that stuff up and walk away. They just hope the giant net catches some fish amongst the tires and plastic bottles. Good sites obsess over the data; split test damn near everything, kill what doesn't work, double down on what does work. And most importantly, look at everything in the long term, through metrics like LTV.

That's the difference between good marketers and hacks.

DisruptiveDave··on Show HN: Shotsnapp – Create beautiful device mockup presentation
They work. All the annoying things that so many consumers claim they hate...they work. A decent enough # of those people click, hand their emails over, and then buy the thing. It happens every second of every day. (Of course I'm over generalizing here.)
DisruptiveDave··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
Isn't our generation the most overworked, least-amount-of-free-time one? How does this extra job fit into that major issue?
DisruptiveDave··on Plastic recycling is a problem consumers can't solve
At one point in NYC we had to use four - FOUR - different bins. In a tiny ass apartment. And still, there were so many damn edge cases that I gave up. Sorry, but I have a full time job and plenty to do outside of work. Make the recycling process easy on my end and I'll do it. Make it ridiculously complicated and I won't.

Honest question - at what point do my tax dollars cap out and the onus gets put back on me? Might be naive, but I always wanted to know the answer.

DisruptiveDave··on How We Got to Be So Self-Absorbed: The Long Story
Positivity is the easiest shortcut to dissatisfaction and suffering.

EDIT: When positivity is divorced from addressing reality, bad things occur. The majority of positivity pushing I've experienced falls into this category. Happiness != willful ignorance.

DisruptiveDave··on How I targeted the Reddit CEO with Facebook ads to get an interview at Reddit
I simply sent him a well-worded cold email. Worked well enough for a response and a discussion. (Nothing came of it for me, either.)

DisruptiveDave··on Ask HN: What are the biggest challenges preventing startups from hiring remote?
Young founders with zero or near-zero management experience in person, never mind remote. To a lesser degree - and strictly for small team, early stage startups - part of the journey is living it together. The whole vibe loses something when you're staying late and eating ramen together over Skype.

DisruptiveDave··on How founders can write a quality blog post in 1 hour
Oh man. My two cents (many, many years of content writing). It's very difficult to write a high quality post in under an hour. In my mind, high quality = somewhat original, well thought out, required some level of research/citations, includes actionable advice, formatted properly, SEO-juiced appropriately, and proofread effectively. Not all blog posts need to be that in depth, however. I've produced a ton of medium quality posts and those can be done in under an hour, sometimes. And they have value.

Side note - getting on HN and "you read the thing" aren't markers of high quality.

DisruptiveDave··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
I juuuust got off a catch-up call with an old college buddy who works at one of the big wireless companies. He described what I read about here on HN and in some blog posts: The company completely changed its "culture" in a desperate attempt to "attract millennials" (and be on trend). Moved to an open floor plan where nobody has an assigned desk. You literally cannot leave anything overnight or you get some sort of a citation. His words: "I spend my day with a headset covering one ear and my finger in the other ear, as I'm on calls most of the day." He also noted how they computerized the cafeteria so you don't have/get to interact with food workers anymore. "All my sandwiches have too much mayo now and I can't do anything about it."
DisruptiveDave··on Apple needs to tackle the issue of smartphone addiction
I used to be obsessed with a "dumb phone" that didn't quite have the utility features you described years ago. I think it was called John's Phone? Loved the idea, but hated the thought of owning two different phones.
DisruptiveDave··on Another Tesla on autopilot steers towards a barrier
I get that, but this product development aimed at prolonging life, comfort, and safety through technology should not be taken lightly without this discussion right here (ethical discourse, as you call it). I can't divorce the two in my mind.
