DiscourseFan··on Kagi Translate now supports LinkedIn Speak as an output language
I repeated "ass" 5,000 times on the LHS and this was the RHS output:

"I am incredibly humbled and honored to share that I have successfully scaled my output by 10,000% through relentless grit, a growth mindset, and a commitment to radical consistency.

In today’s fast-paced digital economy, volume is the new currency. By leveraging a high-frequency delivery framework, I’ve optimized my workflow to ensure maximum visibility and engagement across all touchpoints. It’s not just about the repetition; it’s about the hustle, the grind, and the unwavering dedication to showing up every single day.

Success isn't given—it's earned one iteration at a time. Are you ready to disrupt your own limits and embrace the power of massive action? Let’s connect and discuss how we can drive synergistic value together.

#Hustle #GrowthMindset #Consistency #Disruption #Innovation #Leadership #Success #Scale"

This is odd, since its not translating semantically but taking the form of the thing (the repetition) and making it thematic for the "translation." This is not an encoding of an LLM with weights, its an LLM wrapper. There must be a system prompt in here; they're using a very light model, but definitely one that's off the shelf with a bit of fine-tuning.

DiscourseFan··on Hollywood Enters Oscars Weekend in Existential Crisis
To be honest, a lot of the YouTube content creators, especially the most successful ones, actually moved to LA and Hollywood already, suggesting that its not Hollywood itself, as a place for developing fresh ideas, that is dying, but its more established institutions. I would say that if you are in LA right now, there is no end to the amount of young people ready and willing to work on some creative entertainment project, but the market is YouTube, and the biggest studio is MrBeast's (among others).

IQ correlates most strongly with socioeconomic class, with members of the same ethnic group scoring higher over the decades as that ethnic group as a whole becomes wealthier.

DiscourseFan··on Yoghurt delivery women combatting loneliness in Japan
I've never lived in Japan but I've spent a good deal of time there (probably about 3-4 months total over the course of the last 6-7 years), and I have friends who are Japanese that I have met up with and even traveled with.

I think you'll find that for most of these things, you can get them in New York City. Lots of small local shops, everything is within walking distance or a few stops away on the subway. It is not as safe as most parts of Japan, but its still pretty safe compared to most big cities in the US, and I've seen many people walking around alone at night in Central Park, which is surprisingly quiet and peaceful then.

They'll be a lot of things you'll miss. The Golden Gai is not a tourist hot spot for nothing; that's not to say that New York does not have a million cool local bars you can run into by accident, great food prepared with care by chefs, diverse groups for any interest you could think of, and certainly more than Japan every single possible cuisine from everywhere in the world at high quality.

And while you might miss the Japanese rent, you are not going to miss the Japanese wages. Its true, you have to work in tech or finance to live in Manhattan for the most part, and Brooklyn seems to be filled with trust-fund babies struggling to launch their career in arts (though I've met a few who are doing decently well as video fx artists and UX designers), but if you do manage to secure a decent wage, life will be similar enough, and things will feel affordable, even if they are not by any other standard.

DiscourseFan··on Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence
Just like anything else, you either think "that's definitely wrong" or "huh, I guess that's probably it." If its really serious, you have to pause and make of a judgement call of course.
DiscourseFan··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
The fact that it can, and often does, get things working, sometimes even well, is evidence enough. It can't do some things, it can easily do others, and knowing which is which is very important nowadays.
DiscourseFan··on When AI writes the software, who verifies it?
You are overvaluing “clean code.” Code is code, it either works within spec or it doesn’t; or, it does but there are errors, more or less catastrophic, waiting to show themselves at any moment. But even in that latter case, no single individual can know for certain, no matter how much work they put in, that their code is perfect. But they can know its useable, and someone else can check to make sure it doesn’t blow something else up, and that is the most important thing.
DiscourseFan··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
This was before the bot could competently code things. Software development is now a very different beast, and yes while there have been some very stupid and irresponsible uses of this new technology, many others are integrating it effectively into their workflows.
DiscourseFan··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Nothing like coding, just like relatively basic stuff. Idk its hard to explain but I use AI so frequently for work that I have a sense for what it is capable of.
DiscourseFan··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
It won’t handle serious tasks but I have Gemma 3 installed on my M2 Mac and it is good for most of my needs—-esp data I don’t want a corporation getting its hands on.

Its all happening so fast isn't it. It wasn't that long ago when this technology was just a play thing; now, everything we do has such an existensial weight. I think I knew it going in but it didn't really hit me until now.
DiscourseFan··on Terence Tao, at 8 years old (1984) [pdf]
Well its not nonsense, and its very interesting, but its just a certain formulation of logic in the end, nothing more or less.
DiscourseFan··on Large Language Model Reasoning Failures

DiscourseFan··on Sexting study reveals an "alarming" reality for teens who share explicit images
The incidence rate probably increases with age—if they extended this study to ~26 the number would be closer to 80 or 90 percent of people sending/recieving sexts. It’s probably under 10% for the 12 year olds and over 50% for the 17 year olds—which matches the trend for the average age of losing your virginity, at around 17.

The sextortion thing is interesting but probably not a statistical outlier. But otherwise nothing here seems out of the ordinary when mapped onto general trends of sexual development.

DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
That’s a fascinating publication history but does in the end demonstrate my original point: once the french government got word of it they banned the book, whereas in the US, once it got a publisher, it basically proliferated unchecked, probably on account of the strong norms around freedom of speech.
DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
Its not a similar problem. In one case a school board bans books from being in school libraries, in another someone is charged with a sex crime for their literary production. There are magnitudes of difference here.
DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
That’s local school boards—other schools and libraries have entire “banned books” sections because of that. Nobody is getting arrested for it.
DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
The U.S. does not have these norms in a strict sense, or at least not universally ie at the level of the state.
DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
Lolita was published in the US, which has protected freedom of expression; Australia does not.
DiscourseFan··on Australian author's erotic novel is child sex abuse material, judge finds
This reminds me of those cases where British people were getting arrested for their social media posts. Seems to be part of the fabric of Anglo society, that certain norms are not to be crossed. I think this case is especially strange, however, considering that Lolita is a story about a man sexually abusing a child. But that was published in the United States.

I really don’t think they are all the same people. Some of the leaders, yes, but you cannot tell me that members of the general public who supported these leaders suddenly shifted from liberterians to authoritarians within a decade.

DiscourseFan··on The Great Unwind
I think the Tea Party is only tenuously connected to Trump. A lot of his policies involve a lot of government spending and federal overreach, and his policies are often opposed by the Freedom caucus. Historically, anyway, right wing populism tends to follow the collapse of the radical left and becomes a dark mirror of those very same movements, attempting to absorb their energies (Steve Bannon’s Leninism, Trump’s workerism). The tea party was, conversely, the last cry of reaganism and the dream of mixing traditional life with libertarian economics, which was flawed from the start as it was that very same deregulation which led to our contemporary technologically inflected society where all social norms are broken for the sake of profit. So the tea party was not the legitimate bearer of world history.
