DirkH··on I Am Tired of AI
I don't believe people who claim they can always tell the difference.

I believe they believe their claims . I think they are mistaken about the empirical side of things if they were actually put to an objective test.

Take an expert prompter and the best LLM for the job and someone who believes they can always tell if something is written by AI and I'm >50% sure they will fail a blind test most of the time after you repeat the test enough.

DirkH··on I Am Tired of AI
This is a nice sentiment and I'm sure some people will get more nights of good sleep thinking about it, but it has its limits. If you're enslaved and treated horrendously or don't have your basic needs met who cares?

To quote George RR Martin: "In a heartbeat, a thousand voices took up the chant. King Joffrey and King Robb and King Stannis were forgotten, and King Bread ruled alone. 'Bread.' They clamputed. 'Bread, bread!' "

Replace Joffrey, Robb and Stannis with whatever lofty philosophical ideas you might have to make people feel better about their disempowerment. They won't care.

This is why I abandoned it. And I am happier after I gave up on it.

You want me to have how many services running just so I can have a calDav/cardDav server? And sometimes you'll just stop working because of some unrelated issue of something I'm not using? Headache upon headache when you depend on it, but only for one thing.

Radicale people. Forgive me for doubting you. I have never used Radicale but I certainly do now just to point people away from nextCloud if all they want is a calDav/cardDav server.

Second this.

Setting up syncthing was incredibly easy and it is a beast. Has no problems syncing all my huge video media files

All it did is beg the question for me: why has nobody created a file sync UI where you can essentially use syncthing like you might Google Drive but with a slick effortless interface that non-technical folks wouldn't mind using?

Dude this is the foundation of capitalism. Its not supply and bend over. Its supply and demand.

It is totally reasonable to demand a better steak salad from some restaurant that doesn't allow modifications and moreover totally reasonable to point out how asinine they are for not making easy-to-do modifications when you point it out since that is what you as a paying customer want.

Imagine we lived in a world where 95% of restaurants never ever and vehemently so denied any modification to menu items. It is unreasonable then to demand they change? I need to move towns to get lunch?

This is the insanity we live in with the walled gardens of Apple.

Inconveniences are predicated on whether you use sandboxed Google Play or something else. With sandboxed Google Play it is an identical experience. Everything works.

If not and you use something called the Aurora Store, prepare for nightmares. Or at least that has been my experience as far as inconveniences are concerned with the Aurora Store.

I'm concerned regardless.

If I am paying for a product and a 90% majority of its features I don't care about and only care about 10% of it working really well I'm going to feel like I'm overpaying since I only use and care about 10% of the product, but pay for 100% of it.

And if I were a paying customer I'd keep getting more and more weary if I see the focus of the product keeps being this 90% I don't care about.

DirkH··on Kagi and Wolfram
It doesn't eliminate it silly. It downranks it and upranks things without a lot of tracking relative to Google.

So on Google you miss out on things that might otherwise be hidden gems because Google wouldn't rank it as highly.

There are tradeoffs on both sides.

It never ceases to amaze me how stubbornly good we are as a species at believing that if we create something that is smarter than us in every way possible (e.g. super-AI) then it still will not in any way pose a threat to our (or government's) monopoly on violence.

It's the same sort of wishful hubristic thinking I think that makes some people believe that if an advanced species arrived from outer space that is far smarter than us (e.g. like a super-AI) then we still would not be at any kind of risk.

There's a huge fucking difference between "yo, the neighbourhood and country is unsafe and there is no strongly upheld norm here of people not seeing if they can enter someone else's house if their door is easily unlockable. You must be new here since I noticed your door is pretty insecure, I recommend you do x,y and z if you are to live here safely. Take care." Versus "yo, I just entered your home and snooped around since it was easy to lockpick. There are actually strong norms here of people not doing this so I know this is quite the social violation and something like this had a very low probability of happening otherwise but, you know, your door is weak so it was my right to enter. You should fix it btw"

The internet is like the former not the latter and taking a moral high ground stance that it just should be otherwise is just screaming underwater while doing nothing to actually protect yourself from an actual real threat.

I'd be very thankful if I moved to some place I'm unfamiliar with where people lockpicking is just a cultural norm and someone warned me I should get a better door.

You wouldn't know how much demand there could be till you build it, iterate and innovate. You can't ever do that if regulations stifle it completely.

I don't care. But I'd rather live in a world where tinkerers can tinker away since I imagine they'll be able to make something I would care about later as a consumer.

DirkH··on Beeper – Moving Forward
Then why on earth did they do this? If this is really unambiguously and completely illegal they are just going to get eviscerated and bled dry. And they would have known that. They aren't dumb.

I don't disagree and believe Israel's response is a mistake that is going to backfire, but would like to point out this numbers game people play is not actually that strong argument at all. When the allies invaded Germany a LOT of innocent civilians were killed. It was flattened to destroy the Nazi regime.

You don't see moral outcry over the numbers of German civilians killed. Let's not forget: about 30k Palestinian civilians have been killed in the past 2 decades. During WW2 - a much shorter time period - about half a million (350-500 fucking thousand) civilian Germans were killed, mostly by bombs.

Why is that? Because how murders occur and what kind of evil you're dealing with matters. Not just numbers. I'm nonetheless sympathetic to the view that without the deaths in WW2 we would have seen more deaths because the Nazis were just that evil. Same goes for Hamas. So even if we are just talking numbers consider how many Palestinians (who mostly hate Hamas I might add) we would save long-term if Hamas were eradicated.

That's one thing. Other thing:

I'd pick being an oppressed Palestinian fearing for my life from bombs any day of the week than a hippy that is going about my ordinary day all of a sudden to have jihadists murder my whole family in front of me in my home with their own hands.

Both terrible, one is clearly worse and would continue to be worse even if it were Zionists doing it to Palestinians. This is why Netanyahu admiring a Zionist terrorist is so terrifying. It isn't how many Palestinians he killed, it is how he did it and what motivated him that makes Netanyahu appear so obviously morally monstrous because of his admiration.

DirkH··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
We aren't at war. Propaganda in peacetime and bombs at any time are so disanalogous it is comical.

You win a war of ideas by presenting better ideas, not by censoring bad ideas.

I could just as easily claim there is more of a "they are just capitalists trying to sell a white knight narrative" narrative than an actual white knight narrative.

They're a smaller business that wants to make money, but Apple doesn't want to play fair. I agree with this part of their blog:

“Apple is within their rights to run iMessage how they see fit”

This might be true if Apple was a small company. But they aren’t. They control more than 50% of the US smartphone market, and lock customers into using Apple’s official app for texting (which, in the US, sadly, is the default way people communicate). Large companies that dominate their industry must follow a different set of rules that govern fair competition, harm to consumers and barriers to innovation. We are not experts in antitrust law, but Apple’s actions have already caught the attention of US Congress and the Department of Justice.

DirkH··on Beeper – Moving Forward
But... It wasn't simple. No other app has been able to create the bridge they created. We all saw their initial trending HW post and the impressive technical breakdown.

If it were simple many others would have done this by now.

I use user profiles since I figured I wanted more than just 2 profiles. Am thinking the increased privacy is not worth the decreased convenience and I'd advise others to start using work profiles and only start using user profiles once you have a third use case you're sure you need

It is certainly not perfect but it certainly way faster and seamless than rebooting into another OS.

If you don't mind the battery drain and having both profiles running it is just a menu drop down + single button and ~1 second wait and you have your other profile.

Personally I hate the battery drain so the process for me is a menu drop + single button and ~3 second wait and then unlock pin and I am in my other profile (not ideal, but far better than anything else if you want degoogled).

You can even get notifications from other user profile(s). This is absolutely impossible with dual boot.

DirkH··on A closer look at e/OS: Murena's privacy-first 'deGoogled' Android alternative
I used to use CalyxOS till GrapheneOS got Google Place Sandbox working. Now there is nothing I can't get working on GrapheneOS. Everything works including Google Pay. I just have a user profile for when I need to use an app that needs Google and otherwise my main user profile is just apps that work without Google.

To me this is leagues ahead of any other degoogled experience because at any time I can temporarily turn on Google when I need it (and I often do). But it doesn't defeat the purpose because for the most part you can just turn it off
