DigitalTurk··on Gun Homicide Rate Down 49% Since 1993 Peak; Public Unaware
I don't have a moral problem with suicide. Like I mention elsewhere, in my country euthanasia is sometimes administered to people with certain types of depression. I think that's fine (if weirdly bureaucratic).

Thing is, often people who are depressed do get better. And I think a lot of people who end up killing themselves would have gotten better if only they hadn't. I think this is all the more the case for teenagers.

That's why I think it's worthwhile to take away opportunities to kill yourself. That means making gun possession illegal, installing safety nets, etcetera. (Within reason, of course.)

I don't think Japan and the USA are very comparable. In fact, I think insofar modern countries are concerned you'd be hard pressed to find two countries that are more different than Japan and the USA!

Wow. Am I get downvoted for pointing out a fallacy?

The issue at stake here is the counterfactual ‘If guns were (not) available, would the suicide rate be different’.

How does your (oddly specific) statistic address this question?

can != will

It doesn't mean you have to make it easy to do impulsively.

You can also legalize euthanasia in case of severe, chronic depression, like in some European countries.

Interesting. I thought drink (n.) refered to alcoholic beverages!

Where in the US is this?

>in parts of the South, "a coke" is a carbonated beverage, regardless of brand

I'm curious, is something like Fanta or (carbonated) Ice Tea ever considered a coke?

To me—not a native english speaker—coke means Coca Cola Coke, Pepsi Coke, or Dr Pepper. That is, it's synonymous with the French word 'coca' or the Dutch word 'cola'.

I would imagine that to be the case.

Witness how many people report being unable to distinguish people from ethnicities that they're not used to interacting with.

DigitalTurk··on Predicting Google Product Shutdowns
I disagree.

Allowing more people to see a post is already possible by adding people to the circles that you shared the post with.

These shortcuts don't work for me.

Not that I'd ever use them. On my AZERTY keyboard Ctrl + ] translates to Ctrl + Alt + shift + ). I always have to press shift to enter digits so I'm not sure how the last one is even supposed to work in theory.

I also don't seem to have a formatting menu. Are you sure you're not using a Google Labs feature?

> G+ isn't for everyone, and that's fine. It is a product which is now highly polished, and provides exactly what I and many other people have wanted from a social network.

Is it possible yet to change the visibility of old posts? The absence of small privacy features like this—features that FB does have—always was very off-putting for me. When Google+ was launched they made a huge deal out of Circles, but it strikes me that since then Google has pushed Google+ more as an alternative to Twitter than as an alternative to Facebook (and I don't like Twitter much).

Anyway, I used Google+ so little that I deleted my account in a petty rage when they shut down Google Reader. It's actually nice to have one less social network to worry about.

Bing is great… unless you travel. It fails for many countries. Even for major cities in China it will only show the main roads.

I'm a big fan of Clojure but I think this is true. I expect that in this decade we'll start seeing a shift to programming languages with so-called algebraic type systems.

Java, Python, Ruby, and Clojure will seem outdated just like C++ seems outdated now (not that it doesn't have its uses).

> Anyone that isn't a professional chef is probably going to leave a little blood on a knife by cutting themselves with it.

That's a strong claim.

I'm not a professional chef but I like to use a chef's knife, and I cut rather fast. Yet I don't remember ever cutting myself to the point of bleeding. I only remember scraping off nails and skin.

> like some blood caught in the space between the handle and the blade

I reckon that if it gets stuck between the handle and the blade then we're talking about more than a little blood.

No offense (maybe a giggle) but that seems highly unusual

DigitalTurk··on ATM Skimmers
I live in a European country where chips are common. Yet, about one year ago I encountered a skimming device (I ripped it off and brought it to the cops). Unless magnetic strips are completely disabled (domestically and abroad) the security issue is still there.

Incidentally, one of my banks by default blocks all use of Maestro (the European debit card system) outside of the Eurozone. You have to activate use of Maestro abroad on a trip by trip basis. One of my other banks automatically blocks credit cards used in the United States unless preceded by cash withdrawal at an ATM.

But as far as browsers are concerned http://x.com?y and http://x.com?z are two different URLs, right?
DigitalTurk··on Postgres on the GPU
Really, really cool!

I've toyed with the idea of doing pattern matching (and graph rewriting) on the GPU before but this looks like it's much more advanced than I thought was feasible.

I'm surprised they went with CUDA instead of OpenCL though. CUDA is proprietary NVidea technology and does not work for non-NVidea devices.

> You, serving the file, presumably have an idea what you want the user to do with the file. The .html page you propose editing is server side. The file being served is server side. The server configuration is server side.

The problem is when you want to offer both a view and a download link. Your solution requires offering two different URLs for that, which also breaks caching in the case where a user first wants to view and then download the file.

You probably mean Reeder instead of Reader. It's my favorite RSS app. FWIW, the author has stated the app will continue working after Google Reader disappears. I don't know about the details.

Thanks for sharing. What a confusing mess!

Actually, if you'll read the ZNet article that post is based on you'll notice that users who didn't connect their Windows Phone calendars to their Google accounts before February are still screwed!

I want to connect my Google account after January 30, 2013
Here's what you need to know:

Unfortunately, with Google changing the way it supports EAS,
your Google calendar can’t sync with the Calendar app.
DigitalTurk··on Sorry Google; you can Keep it to yourself
To me it's not a given since AFAICT Apple software doesn't sync with Google Calendar over CalDav by default. Particularly on iOS you have to go out of your way to enable it—viz. you have to select 'Exchange account' instead of 'Google account'.

In any case, if they're committed to preserving this feature then why are they implementing screening?

DigitalTurk··on Sorry Google; you can Keep it to yourself
So how does that help me if I want to sync iCal with Google Calendar?

Addendum: The way I read that form, they will only consider whitelisting apps if the developers ask for it. As a user, I'm still screwed.
