DigitalBison··on Regexper: Beautiful regexp visualizations
Unfortunately it seems to be broken now, but reAnimator was an awesome regex visualization tool (http://osteele.com/tools/reanimator/). It let you enter a regex and would display the state machine similar to this, but then it would also let you enter a string and it would animate the progress of the string matching (or not) against the state machine as you enter each character.
DigitalBison··on Dear Apple, DUNS is a scam, but you already know that
I have no experience with DUNS so I can't say whether or not I agree it's a scam, but I can say that this article didn't make the case for me that it is. The article mentioned the process for requesting a DUNS number being annoying, and taking a while, but made no compelling argument that there's anything scammy about it.
DigitalBison··on The Hobbit Filming Locations mapped
It seems to be broken, at least in FF. I can't get anything to happen when I click on the locations. This is on FF 10.0.9 on OS X, and FF 11.0 on RHEL5.
DigitalBison··on NYC's taxi commission says "yes" to one-year trial of taxi-hailing apps
I think you're probably right, and it's crazy that this is the way things are in NYC. I live in Seattle now (originally from the NYC area) and use Uber extensively. I would be incredibly angry if Seattle tried to pull the same kind of crap that NYC and SF do in regards to black car services like Uber.
DigitalBison··on Apple ignores bug report
As far as I can tell, that post you're quoting was written by a user totally unaffiliated with Apple. It's a pretty enormous stretch to call this "their stance on requirement of antivirus".
DigitalBison··on Before Recruiting in Ivy League, Applying Some Math
What? Unless I'm misinterpreting http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2011/12/25/sports/25ivy-GF..., it seems that a 4.0 GPA and a 2400 on the SAT doesn't even get you a 240. How is a 240 AI "laughable"?
DigitalBison··on Planes overhead
Not sure where Wolfram Alpha gets it from, but that sort of data is available from, for example: https://www.flightstats.com/developers/bin/view/Main/
DigitalBison··on Amazon's Profit Plunges 73%
They'll probably never learn, but Jeff doesn't care: http://www.geekwire.com/2011/amazons-bezos-innovation
DigitalBison··on Ask HN: Who thinks AAPL is overvalued?
What data do you have to back up your claim -- after 3 days have passed since release -- that the iPhone 4S is a bust?
DigitalBison··on Startups: "I take a break" means "I give up"
Read that part again. He's not claiming that $6k/month is an amazing salary (although, as I pointed out below, it is more than 70% of Americans make). When he says "a prestigious item on the resume" I'm reading that as something like taking a job at Google, which would look impressive to many potential employers.
DigitalBison··on Startups: "I take a break" means "I give up"
I realize that HN doesn't represent the general population, but $6k/month puts you ahead of 70% of Americans. Relatively speaking, that's a very high income, not just for a college student.
DigitalBison··on Technical Papers Every Programmer Should Read (At Least Twice)
Whoops, I misinterpreted what you meant by "single random sample". I will definitely check out that paper though.
DigitalBison··on Technical Papers Every Programmer Should Read (At Least Twice)
>Then the result for (x:xs) is (r, n) where n = n' + 1 and r = x with probability 1/n or else r'.

Do you mean r = x:r' instead of r = x?

DigitalBison··on Amazon deploys every 11.6 seconds
Just to clarify, the "deployment every 11.6 seconds" refers to all prod deployments, including internal applications and services. This doesn't mean that a deployment to the retail website (and dependent services) is done every 11.6 seconds, just that some production deployment is done at Amazon every 11.6 seconds.

disclaimer: I work for Amazon, and used to work in the presenter's org.

DigitalBison··on Amazon deploys every 11.6 seconds
Minor correction: the slides had the max number of hosts receiving a deployment at 30,000, not 3,000.
