Dig1t··on New Referendum Would Flip Brexit Result 10 Years On, Poll Finds
Just look at the data, you say "it isn't happening" but it's easy to prove.

University of Manchester: https://hummedia.manchester.ac.uk/institutes/code/briefings/...

1990: White British 95%

2025: White British 77%

2050 (projected): White British 57%

Many parts of London the percentage in schools is already below 20%.

Here are projections for the near future:

Dig1t··on SpaceX's IPO is a disaster waiting to happen for your pension fund
Shorting is the best mechanism for exposing scams and frauds in public markets, in fact that’s really the only reason it exists.

It’s an incentive for people to root out corruption and graft. If you truly believe that SpaceX is a big scam and it’s not actually worth enough to be in the S&P 500, then taking a short position not only will net you a bundle of cash, it will do the public a service by helping to expose a fraud and prevent future companies from doing the same thing.

Dig1t··on SpaceX's IPO is a disaster waiting to happen for your pension fund
I think it’s a combination of talent and the mission. Most people who work there are true believers in the mission of making life multi-planetary. There are many examples in history of people doing extraordinary things when top talent was combined with belief in a higher calling.
Dig1t··on SpaceX's IPO is a disaster waiting to happen for your pension fund
You should short the stock. If you think it’s a big scam and not actually worth being in the top 500 US companies, you could make a lot of money.

>I can assure you building rockets isn't rocket science.

This is mind bogglingly wrong.

“[Rocket Science] looks hard and is harder than it looks” is the classic line. Anyone in the industry will tell you how extremely difficult rockets are.

Look at Blue Origin, all the money in the world and it still blows up on the pad. Look at ULA, largest aerospace companies in the world with institutional aerospace talent, backed by nearly unlimited government funding and is nowhere near a reusable rocket, decades behind SpaceX.

You are letting politics blind you to reality.

Dig1t··on U.S. midterms have a cyber problem, but it's not at the ballot box
It's mostly just that we are worried that anyone seeking to regulate the platforms is mostly just seeking to control said platforms and get them to spread their version of the truth. Something we already see with CNN, NBC, Fox News, etc.
Dig1t··on Anthropic confidentially submits draft S-1 to the SEC
They only go into the index if they are actually worth enough to go into the index. If they drop below a certain value they will naturally be kicked out of the index just like any other company. I.e. if they are not actually in the top 500 US companies then they will not be in the 500 index. The risk of any one company is balanced by all the other companies in the index also.

If they really are a scam, their value will drop and they will be kicked out of the index. I still don’t understand how this means people will be “holding the bag”.

Additionally if you really believe that they are a scam and their price will fall you can just short the stock to completely neutralize their effect on your 401k.

Dig1t··on Anthropic confidentially submits draft S-1 to the SEC
If your plan uses Fidelity you can move your 401k into Brokeragelink and that lets you pick individual stocks. Schwab, TIAA, Alight and some others also have something similar.
Dig1t··on The California state assembly has passed the 'Protect Our Games Act'
I'm not even saying this should be dismissed with a blanket dismissal.

First example is a reminder that regulation can be bad.

Second is an actual concern about this specific regulation. This is a concrete concern about the incentives it creates. There wasn't a single response to this comment about exactly WHY questioning effectiveness of it is irrational.

Dig1t··on The California state assembly has passed the 'Protect Our Games Act'
It’s not irrational, the comments literally explain in great detail the downsides of the regulation.

For example one commenter in this thread said:

>See also car fuel economy standards that push car makers into killing the wagon market segment in favor of SUVs.

This is an objectively true and prove-able statement. What is irrational about that?

WRT regulation the only thing that matters is the incentives that it creates.

>If this is how the bill ends up being enacted, it will only push more big game developers into making their titles subscription only.

This is a valid concern and a real incentive if that’s how the law works. What is irrational about this argument?

Dig1t··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
They will only be added to those indexes if they are actually trading at a value that places them in the top 100 or 500 companies in the US. If they fall below that price then they will be kicked out of the index just like any other company.

What exactly is the risk to normal investors if that’s the case? If it’s all a big scam then they will trade lower and they’ll naturally be kicked out of the index.

This is a rule that will apply to all new companies. When Anthropic and OpenAI go public they will also benefit from the rule. Do you think the media/public will be just as outraged when they do it?

The goal of the S&P 500 is to keep the index representative of the US market. They have in fact changed rules in the past when market conditions have changed. These mega IPOs are an entirely new market condition, as private companies have never been this big before listing in history. So large that they immediately fall into the top 100 or 500 largest companies in the country.

There’s also the fact that Nasdaq is a private company and it now has competition from the new Texas exchange. SpaceX is actually dual-listing on TXSE and Nasdaq. Nasdaq needs to keep these giant IPO companies happy because if they don’t they will list on the competitor exchange which would be disastrous for Nasdaq (supercharging their competitor).

These things affect each other as well. Nasdaq wants to make sure they get the IPO on their exchange, so they include them in the Nasdaq 100. S&P 500 doesn’t want to be outdated by missing a trillion dollar company from their index, while other exchanges like the Nasdaq 100 include them.

There’s a real case to be made that this is just self interest on the part of the exchange and the other index providers.

Dig1t··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
Very likely declining social trust has something to do with this phenomenon.

>But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite. Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam -- famous for "Bowling Alone," his 2000 book on declining civic engagement -- has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as they do in the most homogenous settings. The study, the largest ever on civic engagement in America, found that virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings.

>"The extent of the effect is shocking," says Scott Page, a University of Michigan political scientist.

It was pretty dang useful when there was no alternative, and I’m sure that many people physically could not have performed their jobs without copy-pasting from it.

But yeah, I don’t know how anyone could have any affection or nostalgia for it, people were massive jerks and it was not a pleasant place.

Dig1t··on Alaska's oil revival sparks a new energy rush Into the Arctic
The entire planet is energy-constrained right now, there aren't enough solar panels or batteries to power all the demand we have, and the demand only continues to grow. We are so energy constrained in fact that people are trying seriously to deploy new nuclear in the US. Even with countries like China massively subsidizing solar, we're still not going to have enough renewable energy deployed.
Dig1t··on Alaska's oil revival sparks a new energy rush Into the Arctic
Why would the oil industry collapse? It seems to me that there is nearly an unlimited demand for energy on the planet. If there's extra energy somewhere, humans will find a use for it. Quality of life for humans is directly correlated with energy abundance (of all kinds, solar is included in that).

Dig1t··on For first time since World War II, US national debt now larger than its economy
Zionism is indeed the real threat.

Miriam Adelson, Sheldon Adelson, Larry Ellison gave Trump hundreds of millions during his campaign to ensure this war happened.

Netanyahu visited Trump 7 times leading up to this war in Iran.

Every geopolitical expert on this topic has weighed in on it concluding it was obviously a move that only benefits Israel and weakens the US on the global stage.

There were 2 checks on Israel’s power in the Middle East: Iraq and Iran.

It is no coincidence that the USA has invaded both.

After Iran falls, Israel is the only nuclear power in the Middle East. They have ambitions to dominate the entire region, including Lebanon, Syria, and parts of Egypt. Just Google “greater Israel project”.

Dig1t··on [dead]
Just think it through logically for a sec:

1. Apple posts a job, interviews a white guy and wants to make an offer

2. Diversity quota not met, interview a person of color

3. At this point if you hire the person of color the white person didn't get the job purely because of their race. This is textbook racial discrimination.

4. If you decide to hire the white person anyway, then you interviewed the black person purely for performative reasons.

The only possible outcomes to this system are discrimination based on immutable characteristics or purely performative interviews that waste everyone's time.

>the statistical overrepresentation of white people in powerful roles

This is also completely wrong:

https://www.apple.com/diversity/

White people are actually UNDER represented because there is so much discrimination against them now.

This over-representation thing is a myth which never made sense in the first place.

In 1992 the USA was 76% white (not evenly distributed, many states were actually 90+%), and every year since then we have dramatically increased diversity, but the diversity has not come with a uniform distribution. Much of it has been illegal border crossings or people imported for very specific types of work visas. Expecting companies' racial distributions to perfectly match these huge changes in demographics was a completely impossible task that can only be accomplished with outright discrimination. For example from 1992 -> 1999 the Hispanic population increased by 40%, but many Hispanics who came to the US were not educated in Computer Science and ended up working in industries like construction. If that's true then why is it reasonable to expect that Apple's (or any other company/institution) representation of Hispanics should automatically increase to match their new share of the population?

Also an interesting aside: Apple has since scrubbed ESG reports from their site and no longer publish nearly as much diversity information, likely because they have discriminated so heavily and much of what they are doing would not hold up in court.

Dig1t··on Silicon Valley has forgotten what normal people want
>Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them.

I think we’re all just trying to come up with cool things and show it to people to see if they want it.
