Dibes··on OpenAI Five Benchmark: Results
Looks like they are at least playing pros from TI8[0].

[0]: "These results give us confidence in moving to the next phase of this project: playing a team of professionals at The International later this month." from https://blog.openai.com/openai-five-benchmark-results/ at the bottom

If I had to guess I would say that Dota is a very complex environment that could be akin to real-world complexity that is simulatable to the point that simulation and the real game work identical. The real world isn't nearly as clean, however, as we get better and better at these "toy" examples we likely could learn more efficiently on the real world problems.
Dibes··on Cutting Edge Deep Learning for Coders, Part 2
another thing I used a ton when going through part 1 was being signed into my google account, google kept track of my progress through the video and if I exited out and came back on a different machine it would resume where I last left off, then I would back up a few minutes to build that context back up (or attempt to anyways).
Dibes··on JavaScript Pattern Matching Proposal
as someone who only has a little experience with pattern matching, how does this look bad? The syntax looks good enough to me that I could and would want to use it.
Dibes··on After Facebook scrutiny, is Google next?
I am going to speculate that it isn't poor engineering per-say but more likely that they are solving for 95-99% use case and not spending the man-hours to make their systems work for the rest.
Dibes··on After Facebook scrutiny, is Google next?
To play devil's advocate, I can see a world in which Apple as a publicly traded company is hard pressed into returning stronger results for its investors and turns to data as a way to expand. Not saying it will happen as there is no indicator that they need or want to. However, it is important to note that it isn't outside the realm of possibility at all.

Dibes··on Waymo Applies to Put Autonomous Cars on CA Roads Without Safety Drivers
While I agree, yes it has been proven with Tesla's technology that it could happen, I believe that Waymo would not be so callous as to apply for this permit if it had not 100% proven that its technology would not do something as blatantly bad as that. I could be wrong, but I certainly feel through their various reports and showcases that they have by far and away the best grasp on fully autonomous vehicles. I have yet to read that in their millions of miles of fully autonomous driving there was a crash that was worse than cosmetic damage to either vehicle or caused injury [1]. They also seem ready to take responsibility for any of their mistakes and use them as a learning experience to further improve their technology.

Dibes··on Notice of Data Breach
I initially really liked the idea of a hardware pepper, however, if that ever goes defunct or you need to spread the load over multiple machines the password now is invalid and the user is stranded and forced to recover their account via email or some other means. I think there are definitely areas where a hardware pepper would be awesome though!
Dibes··on Ask HN: Should we change the way we do software interviews? What's stopping us?
I actually love the idea of teaming up with some people to do some random hacking. That sounds like a super fun interview! But it also sounds really time-consuming for the team members as well as the candidate, especially if the time goes flat
Dibes··on Introducing Surface Laptop
Just to let you know, that person is not and never was a Google employee according to their resume
Dibes··on PHP 7 Virtual Machine
out of pure ignorance -- what are the correct domains that either fit into?
Dibes··on Gcam, the computational photography project that powers the Google Pixel camera
I don't think it is the answer to everything, but it can be very broadly applied to a whole lot of scenarios and get pretty good results for the most part. I don't think you should worry, however you should take a look at it because it is pretty cool!
Dibes··on Updates to our Google Voice apps
It's not necessarily the experience on the phone that is lacking in other SMS based apps on competing platforms -- I see it as the ability to leverage being able to message anyone from most platforms be it conputer, iPad, or phone and have it all in sync. That to me is the massive draw to it.
Dibes··on Show HN: 30 Days of React
Yup, there is an entry point for both the Android and iOS app. You can point to the same root component or a separate one if you want separate layouts orwhat have you
Dibes··on Waymo: Google's self-driving car company
To be fair I don't think Google is the gold standard for hardware. Outside of a few successful hardware releases (Chromecast and arguably the pixel line) they seem to struggle in this area.
Dibes··on Waterloo Co-op: A Blessing and a Curse
I am currently in the bay area wrapping up a co-op term (4 month intervals very similar to the waterloo experience). I disagree that it isn't worth it regardless of what your skill and desire are. You learn so much from just working that school does not give you, and that itself is worth it. But also while I agree that bay area companies will test and hire you for your skill, you have no foot in the door. You could be brilliant but have a lacking resume/application and they could just pass over your application. The point is that I agree that it may not help in the actual hiring process, but it gives you a better chance to get your foot in the door.
