Dfiesl··on Pop!_OS bans AI-generated code from much of its codebase
Were you reading through the code it was generating to make sure the flow was intuitive and comprehensible for each PR? Projects only turn in to maintainable messes if you blindly merge in unmaintainable messy code.
Dfiesl··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
The law is only meant to apply to citizens of Utah though. Blocking all exit relays would mean that absolutely anyone accessing that website would not be able to do so from a VPN which burdens people outside of Utah too.
Dfiesl··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
I think LLMs just allow you to get to where you want to get to quicker. So in a productivity oriented world it seems weird to not be making use of them where those gains can be had.
Dfiesl··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
I think they just meant its weird as in if you met a software dev at a dinner party who was still writing all their code by hand it would raise an eyebrow and you’d want to enquire further why that is.
Dfiesl··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
I guess the 21st century classroom is the free online classroom you connect to from your portable device
Dfiesl··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I think the whole native thing is more for better performance, debugging ease and dependency reduction rather than seeking variation in UIs.
Dfiesl··on Shopify moves back to Native from React Native
Android and iphone emulator MCP, model compares screens, flags is theres drift? Something like that I’d guess
Dfiesl··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
I guess theyre talking about all the electronics being used to populate the various data centre's popping up about the place. The GPUs, RAM and what not
Dfiesl··on Command and Conquer Generals natively ported to macOS, iPhone, iPad using Fable
Probably not exclusively using Fable.
Dfiesl··on Ripping a DVD, a federal crime in 1999, requires $22 and free software in 2026
I'm not seeing personal use as one of the DCMA exemptions to prohibition against copyright protection circumvention: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-37/chapter-II/subchapter-...

The exemptions seem to be for pretty specific cases. Have you got a link to the EFF case?

Dfiesl··on Ripping a DVD, a federal crime in 1999, requires $22 and free software in 2026
I'm a bit confused by the title. It seems to suggest that ripping a DVD in 2026 is no longer a federal crime, which I'm pretty sure it is. And that ripping a DVD in 1999 didn't require $22 worth of hardware and some free software -> both of which I'm pretty sure it did.
Dfiesl··on I'm skeptical about efforts to revolutionize schooling
Im definitely in this camp.

It seems like the biggest frustration from the teachers’ part with modern schooling is lack of engagement from the students. This is clearly telling us something.

Sure some students have not even had their basic needs met, which is a separate issue. But those that have and still don’t engage tells us that their brains have probably assigned the information they’re receiving as “having little or no value”, i.e. meaningless.

I bet if you were to lead a class of teenagers on the subject of relationships or friendship, or even how to host a successful party, suddenly you’d see a lot more engagement. Why? Because it’s actually relevant to their every day existence.

Dfiesl··on Ask HN: Spent thousands, got no customers. What's wrong with my site?
Even though on closer inspection the site is about more than just image generation, at first glance, it seems like its just an AI image generator. That's not a novel idea these days.

My interaction was, try to generate an image, get hit by a sign in screen, my enthusiasm has gone, close tab.

Dfiesl··on I built an AI receptionist for a mechanic shop
I imagine they just help with triaging the customers query so it ends up with the right department/team. Also probably some tech support first in case it can solve the issue first.
Dfiesl··on I built an AI receptionist for a mechanic shop
I guess apps can only handle a discreet set of pre determined problems, whereas LLMs can handle problems the company hasn’t foreseen.
Dfiesl··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
It can make decisions that are unbounded by if statements. To me that is more autonomous
Dfiesl··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
I think the thing that gets me is that, whether or not this was entirely autonomous, this situation is entirely plausible. Therefore its very possible that it will happen at some point in the future in an entirely autonomous way with potentially greater consequences.
Dfiesl··on An AI agent published a hit piece on me
Everything being done “quietly” is another one that now grates on me.
Dfiesl··on Coding agents have replaced every framework I used
I think the bit you quoted is a tie in with an earlier bit:

“ I can be the architect without the wearing act of laying every single brick and spreading the mortar. I can design the dress without the act of cutting and sewing each individual piece of fabric”

To me, this text doesn’t read as being entirely written by an LLM, there is definitely an air of LLM about it though, so maybe the first draft was.

Dfiesl··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
I’m going from macOS to linux currently. It was the hardware obsolesence that kicked things off but I definitely wont miss the constant nagging about my iCloud being full
Dfiesl··on It’s OK to block ads (2015)
Its a neat and rational way of looking at things but does it always make sense to give your time a monetary value?
Dfiesl··on Unheard works by Erik Satie to premiere 100 years after his death
I think if you explore the “classical” genre of music you’ll quickly find many works of merit by composers which date back over 100 years
Dfiesl··on I went for 1,200 jobs but got only two interviews
I think every job I've ever applied to has asked for both a resume/CV and a cover letter. A recruiter may glance at first but if they like what they see or they can only put through 10 applicants to interview then they're likely to properly read through.
Dfiesl··on I went for 1,200 jobs but got only two interviews
I defo agree that unless you get to interview you're unlikely to get any feedback, but showing your application to others in the industry (or university tutors as in this girls case) and getting their feedback can be super helpful.

With C, I think it always helps to demonstrate some knowledge of what the company gets up to so if your application does get a second glance then it seems like you actually care about the company, and that does take time.

Dfiesl··on I went for 1,200 jobs but got only two interviews
1200 applications over a period of 18 months is over 2 applications a day for 18 months solid. If thats the case there's no way you're putting in the time needed to A) find jobs that actually excite you; B) reflect on where you can improve after each rejection; C) write really effective cover letters.
Dfiesl··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
Yeah the glasses will be dictating the text. For identifying objects the cameras in the glasses will be substitutes for her failing eyesight, no GPS or prescription needed.

A phone you have to hold in your hand whereas glasses you don't. Therefore glasses are superior for these use cases.

Dfiesl··on You can't optimize your way to being a good person
I think the sentiment is that it feels like theres a lot of unkindness in the world and that makes it a worse place and you can either be part of that or you can make the world a better place by striving to be kind. Thats my interpretation anyway.
Dfiesl··on You can't optimize your way to being a good person
I'm guessing from your reply that you don't think its important to emphasise kindness as part of supporting your childrens' growth. If that is the case, what do you emphasise if anything?
Dfiesl··on Aircraft seat crushed mobile phone battery, caused a fire on passenger plane
I agree. The fact that we go to such enormous lengths to prevent potentially nefarious items getting aboard an aircraft, yet we freely allow potentially explosive li-ion batteries is quite bizarre.
Dfiesl··on Aircraft seat crushed mobile phone battery, caused a fire on passenger plane
I'd be pretty surprised if this was a popular point of view. But it is your point of view and I respect that.
