Detrytus··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
Prices in the US are usually much lower than in Europe. I just checked and 48->64 ram bump is still $200

I just did a 14" MBP with M5 Max, 128GB RAM, 4TB SSD, nano-texture display. Price difference is $5849 vs 7004 EUR ($8136).

Detrytus··on Iranian Women Graduate in Stem 3× the Rate of U.S. Women and Has 5× More PhDs
Well, to be honest most countries in the world beat America in healthcare and transportation, and to lesser degree in education and housing. US are a third world country with big army, that’s it.
Detrytus··on Iranian Women Graduate in Stem 3× the Rate of U.S. Women and Has 5× More PhDs
I think it is kind of a paradox which is clearly visible in some progressive Scandinavian countries like Sweden or Denmark.
Detrytus··on Mac Studio 512GB RAM Option Disappears Amid Global DRAM Shortage
Why would they remove the option instead of just increasing the price?
Detrytus··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
Well, I think context matters here a lot:

If you go to a random lawyer in Wyoming and ask them to write "expert opinion" then what you'll get would probably be something standard, written by a junior associate, or maybe even produced by ChatGPT.

If the White House orders "expert opinion" on potential Supreme Court ruling then the chances are that the expert asked to prepare it is someone who plays golf with some of the SCOTUS judges.

So those two "expert opinions" might not bear the same weight.

Detrytus··on Judge orders government to begin refunding more than $130B in tariffs
Maybe I'm naive, but if court orders tariff refunds cannot it also order that the importer must return it to individual buyers? That's only fair, right? Companies don't get to keep the money. If they want to sue government for some extra compensation for their trouble they can do that separately.
Detrytus··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
128gb was there for a while. I am kind of disappointed they do not have 256gb option.
Detrytus··on Waymo blocking ambulance during deadly Austin shooting
A human driver would just get out of their car and beat the crap out of you, something that Waymo is not capable of (yet).
Detrytus··on Bus stop balancing is fast, cheap, and effective
1: This "ADHD" issue is because you've never seen properly ran bus system. I used to live in big European city, riding bus to work everyday, and I never even knew the bus schedule. I did not have to. They would come every 15 minutes, or every 7-8 minutes during the rush hour. So I could just show up at the stop anytime and be sure that a bus will appear quite soon. Zero advance planning required.

Well, maybe they both did not want you to... ;-)

Detrytus··on Sub-$200 Lidar could reshuffle auto sensor economics
Maximum GDPR fine is 4% of global revenue in the previous year. If a company has 30% profit margin then they can, in theory, treat is as a cost of doing business, indefinitely.
Detrytus··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
> I use my credit and debit cards the same way today as I did before smartphones existed.

How exactly are you doing that? with 3D Secure online credit card transactions now require confirmation in the mobile app (or via OTP sent by SMS, but this is being phased out, as it is insecure)

Detrytus··on Why E cores make Apple silicon fast
> Nevertheless, an optimum seems to have been reached around 20 years ago, and since then more often than not I see only worse interfaces that make harder to do what was simpler previously, so there is no incentive for an "upgrade".

“I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

Douglas Adams

Detrytus··on Microsoft 365 now tracks you in real time?
OK, I’m renaming my home WiFi to “Riverside_Strip_Club” :-)
Detrytus··on Fedora Asahi Remix is now working on Apple M3
As a person who moved to US from Europe recently I can say that prices charged by US healthcare providers are ridiculous - all overpriced 10-20x compared to my home country.
Detrytus··on Internet voting is insecure and should not be used in public elections
For me the problem with mail-in votes is that they are (in many jurisdictions) allowed to come in long after the in-person voting is closed, and the preliminary results are annouced. So it creates the space for manipulations, where you count the in-person votes first, and, if the score is close, then a week after the election day half a million of mail-in votes mysteriously comes in and swings the vote one way or another.
Detrytus··on Efficient method to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
This solves only part of the problem: it captures CO2 and can release it later. But you still need to figure out what to do with this CO2, how to turn it into something useful.

Still, making only 32k PLN ($9k) profit on 137M PLN ($38M) revenue seems like a really badly operated business.
Detrytus··on Does my key fob have more computing power than the Lunar lander?
The keyfob was brought up by someone so they can make a clickbaity title: "A thing in your pocket has more computing power than Apollo guidance computer. And it's not your smartphone"
Detrytus··on NVIDIA frenemy relation with OpenAI and Oracle
But you haven't made any money either. That's what "profit" means.

Also, "the asset" here means stocks of a company that is losing billions dollars per year. OpenAI has no clear path to become profitable, especially given the fact that Google has just leaprfroged them with their Gemini 3 model.

Detrytus··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Well, by offering food for punch in the face you changed it from charity to free market transaction. Basically you gave them a chance to earn their food instead of just giving it to them. If they deem the price too high and refuse your offer then again, nothing bad happened.
Detrytus··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Well, some kinds of disability still are a stigma, but here on HN neurodiversity/autism is celebrated as some kind of superpower, basically.
Detrytus··on Jury trials scrapped for crimes with sentences of less than three years
"Totalitarian nightmare" is the natural state of the mankind. At the end of the day we are just animals, seeking to establish dominance over other animals. Couple centuries of democracy were an anomaly, raising from the fact that industrial revolution needed educated people as factory workers, but did not create effective tools of control over those (now educated and therefore more conscious and politically active) masses until very recently.
Detrytus··on How a French judge was digitally cut off by the USA
Sharing intel is another big thing. Without US satellite imagery and gps coordinates Ukraine soldiers would not know what to shoot at.
Detrytus··on 210 IQ Is Not Enough
So it is possible, and you just calculated the probability of that happening.
Detrytus··on Contributing to open-source should be required, like jury duty
Off topic but: Jury trials are one of the weirdest things about America: If I’m ever on trial for some crime I want my case decided by professional judges not a team of random idiots.
Detrytus··on Canadian military will rely on public servants to boost its ranks by 300k
It's always funny how people get this backwards: China being an export economy means that the whole world is dependent on them, not the other way around.
Detrytus··on You can't refuse to be scanned by ICE's facial recognition app, DHS document say
> The alternative is dispensing with the notion that some people are illegal and must be purged, or even that this a legitimate function of government.

That's not an alternative at all. Countries are built by certain groups of people (citizens), based on some underlying principles, culture, values. To preserve that, citizens have the right to decide what kind of people they want to let in. Immigrating to US is a privilege, not a right, as it should be. There's nothing wrong with deporting illegal aliens as long as due process is followed (which I agree is not the case with ICE under Trump, but that's a separate discussion).
