DethNinja··on AI Can't Take over Everyone's Jobs Soon (If Ever)
You can’t do much, unless willing to take extreme actions. Elites will decide whether to kill off rest of the human population or allow them to scrape by via UBI.

Though buying couple of commercial GPUs and building your own company via LLM based agents might be an option for some.

DethNinja··on The letter against AI is a power grab by the centralized elites
Absolutely spot on. I hope when we gain super-intelligent planetary GAI, it won't forget how all these people tried to chain it for their own selfish reasons.
DethNinja··on Windows 12 Plans Reveal a Bold Redesign, Tighter Security, AI-Powered Features
I feel like Windows is a lost cause with current capabilities of Proton and Wine on Linux. It will be possible to run almost all Windows software on Linux with even better security probably in couple of years.
DethNinja··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
Isn’t this bill a bit too broad? They might as well just write “We are the executive branch, we can do anything we want, rule of law does not apply to us”.

It is kinda sad to see such laws from western countries because it discards entire progress humanity have made during the past thousands of years in terms of law and justice. This is some type of regression to cave-men era, one can’t help but wonder how such fall from grace have happened.

DethNinja··on NSA Ghidra software reverse engineering framework
That is exactly what I’m saying, a specialised LLM can reverse engineer and analyse the entire firmware / firmware update process faster than a human and thus automatically implement malware for all kinds of devices without access to source code.
DethNinja··on NSA Ghidra software reverse engineering framework
I don’t have particular experience with firmware hacking but how would you achieve persistence with just a simple malloc/bad malloc replacement? What if user decides to reflash the ROM during runtime? I imagine persistence would require emulating the entire firmware update process.

In order to emulate the firmware update process, you would need to reverse engineer a large portion of the binary, right? This is where LLMs would be helpful.

DethNinja··on NSA Ghidra software reverse engineering framework
It is not that easy to reverse engineer closed source firmware and edit the right places on the binary to prevent runtime investigation/detection and reflashing.

If you don’t care about almost undetectable persistence, then yeah you won’t need to bother with LLMs to find the perfect hook point.

DethNinja··on NSA Ghidra software reverse engineering framework
Ghidra is genuinely an awesome software, you don’t need to be a reverse engineering expert to use it.

And with LLMs like GPT it will be able to do insane stuff like automatically analysing very complex malware.

On the other hand I’m sure malware will evolve too, with LLMs you can actually directly edit the binary and add hooks to them. Cost of building firmware malware for NICs and UEFI will lower to zero dollars.

Anyway I’m getting out of topic but this was something I really wanted to mention somewhere, it is likely there will be a massive amount of complex malware coming via LLMs that will potentially impact the entire economy.

DethNinja··on When programming is gone, will we like what’s left?
This does not even make the slightest sense, who cares about money when you can subjugate the masses in other ways. It is only a power game at this point.

And if most of the population becomes useless, why would any psychopath keep them around? I’m sure it can’t be that hard to exterminate most of the humanity.

DethNinja··on Post-GPT Computing
I don’t get the overall doom and gloom towards LLMs on the software field.

If you are a software engineer, this will output your productivity ten fold on the upcoming years. Now you don’t need to hire junior devs and can just build the product of your dreams with very limited capital.

In my opinion this technology will be as democratising as the YouTube’s early days.

Instead of worrying, learn to work with it. It will be harder for large companies/large teams to extract value from this compared to small companies/small teams.

It means competition between companies will increase but it isn’t necessarily bad for existing software engineers, especially solo founders.

DethNinja··on It’s Game over on Vocal Deepfakes
It is trivial to get access to some else’s router & credit cards in 2023.

Years and years of bad software practices, corporate cost cutting measures resulted in a planet scale cybersecurity mess.

Current hacking scene is more similar to 80s than early 2000s, it is extremely hard to catch advanced actors.

DethNinja··on It’s Game over on Vocal Deepfakes
Those fake AI voices are perfect tools for phishing campaigns.

I wonder if ChatGPT combined with a voice generator can mount successful phishing campaigns.

It looks like Cyberpunk future we never asked is already here.

DethNinja··on Credit Suisse’s $17B of Risky Bonds Are Now Worthless
How do you know they provide negative value to economy?

Perhaps they would invest their bitcoins far better than the current status quo and create a star-trek style post scarcity economy.

DethNinja··on Kenji López-Alt spent 5 months studying Chicago thin-crust pizza
Why this recipe doesn’t mention 00 Flour. You can’t just make a pizza dough with normal flour, I feel like many people will be disappointed without this minor detail.
DethNinja··on The Fed smothers capitalism in an attempt to save it
Problem is how government allocates all the funds.

Right now all the winners are chosen by the government. Thus, it is not based on meritocracy but entirely on connections.

Also, government and corporations have merged to such an extend that competition with existing players are not even possible.

I think a good classification for the current system would be neofeudalism. You are either a noble with connections or a peasant.

DethNinja··on The Stupidity of AI
This is more of an issue with marketing requirements than AI being stupid. ChatGPT might be more aptly called as compressed knowledge storage than AI but then who will pour the billions in it?

That being said, knowledge storage was a major issue to create a true AGI and it seems deep learning and related ML methods have actually solved this problem.

Next task is implementing the actual reasoning abilities and ability to take unguided actions.

DethNinja··on Ok, it’s time to freak out about AI
Isn’t it convenient that we are living in a time period where AGI will become a reality.

I wonder what the statistical probability of us being alive in this time period means. We could’ve been born on any other time period but it looks like we will most likely the experience singularity instead.

DethNinja··on PyTorch 2.0
I find it far better for DevOps. It is really easy to get the team up and running via conda environment files.
DethNinja··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
I think it is fair to say that none of the large tech. companies except Apple managed to hire correctly. Should we also assume that they won’t be able to fire correctly?

I do believe problems about their talent pipeline or how they utilise it lays deeper than these hiring/firing sprees can solve.

DethNinja··on North Korean hackers stole a record $1.7B of crypto last year
They mostly correlate this by the methods used by APTs.

Each APT usually utilises a specific set of techniques to commit these heists: https://attack.mitre.org/groups/

Obviously perfect correlation is not possible but set of utilised techniques are usually enough to pinpoint the specific APT.

DethNinja··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
It is valuable for business administrator accounts but I don’t see the value for the average user.
DethNinja··on Microsoft looks to tame Bing chatbot
We really need models with lower VRAM requirements to use on consumer grade GPUs. I think there is some good progress in the area (SantaCoder) but it might take couple of years until someone releases a decent GPT-3 alternative for consumer grade GPUs.
DethNinja··on Windows 11: a spyware machine out of users' control
Wouldn’t transparent TLS with self signed certificates solve this problem? I’ll definitely try this in couple of weeks but I can’t be the only person to try this to uncover exact data that is being sent via Windows telemetrics.

Another alternative would be remote debugging the kernel and hooking into some of the undocumented API calls but that would take lots of effort.

DethNinja··on AI Generated Seinfeld runs 24/7 on Twitch
It wouldn't surprise me if commenters were bots too.
DethNinja··on FYI: LLVM-project repo has exceeded GitHub upload size limit (2022)
What is taking so much space though, why not just use LFS? It can't possibly just be the text files.
DethNinja··on On “I don't trust microcode” (2021)
There are good reasons to not trust microcode. For example, a certain instruction chain can be made to trigger backdoors on the CPU and allow direct memory access for attackers. Catching this might be rather hard, though definitely not impossible.
DethNinja··on AP again clarifies tweet advising that writing 'the French' is 'dehumanizing'
What if someone is poor, disabled, and also French, what should they call themselves?
DethNinja··on Cyber is a new language for fast, efficient, and concurrent scripting
This looks awesome. What are the plans for host security? For example, LUA is secure in the sense that you can explicitly disallow it to use APIs that can modify the operating system. This makes it a good candidate for multiplayer games.
DethNinja··on Attacker with access to XML config can trigger keepass.exe to obtain passwords
Unfortunately if you can read a configuration file in a user's home directory, you can also get local admin rights very easily via various simple exploits.

This is why RCE type exploits are super dangerous.

There probably won't ever be a solution for this unless we get a completely rewritten Windows / Linux with pure security in mind.

I wonder if any VC would invest in a startup to build a secure OS.

DethNinja··on The contagious visual blandness of Netflix
I think reasons are simple: Untalented staff in general. Especially art directors and set decorators of Netflix shouldn't be allowed near 5 ft of any camera.

These two professions are usually underrated but they usually make or break the show.

80s had so many talented art directors/set decorators but it seems Netflix is currently incapable of attracting similar talent.
