Destiner··on Value of life
> In Western countries and other liberal democracies, estimates for the value of a statistical life typically range from US$1 million—US$10 million; for example, the United States FEMA estimated the value of a statistical life at US$7.5 million in 2020

Woah that's tiny.

Destiner··on Turbo 8 is dropping TypeScript
not really, those tools somewhat overlap, but they have completely different purposes (formatting vs linting)
Destiner··on Turbo 8 is dropping TypeScript
variety of code is one thing, your library can be used in thousands of places, doesn't mean it have to do thousands of different things
Destiner··on Bun v0.7.0
Just a guess: heroku-like hosting for js apps/backends with a focus on performance, using bun under the hood
Destiner··on Mistakes to avoid to build a better 1-person business
There are things that mostly just work (e.g. static content), and then there are things that require constant attention (infra, PaaS, tech heavy APIs).
Destiner··on Making Figma better for developers with Dev Mode
Or even better, cmd + /, type “svg”, press enter, done
Destiner··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
Cute app, but you can already switch tabs (opt + cmd + arrows) and windows (cmd + `)?
Destiner··on Apple announces multibillion deal with Broadcom to make components in the USA
Never try to catch a specific price if you don't have any private insight, as that is effectively day trading.
Destiner··on Rome v12.1: a linter formatter for TypeScript, JSX and JSON
I don't see how they are going to compete with tons of ESLint plugins. There's just no way a small team can do such a large amount of maintenance.
Destiner··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
I'd personally pay for a lot of services if they allow you to toggle certain features off.

uBlock's great but it doesn't work in Safari.

Destiner··on Discord’s username change is causing discord
I'm glad they are making the change. The current "discriminator" system is ugly and confusing. I always felt weird sharing my name along with some cryptic numbers.

@username is much more straightforward and familiar.

Destiner··on Childhoods of Exceptional People
Why not live in Spain, find a very good school there, maybe hire a few tutors and then let your child to study at whatever uni they want?

Choosing a school is important, but not as important as choosing a uni imo.

Destiner··on Show HN: YouTube Summaries Using GPT
This is a neat project, but it also makes me wonder how much useful information is actually provided by an average YouTube video.

Taking the headphone review on the landing page as an example, the generated summary is "The Sony XM5s offer improved audio and call quality, but may not be worth the extra cost compared to the XM4s."

Like, duh? You probably could deduce that even without watching the video, 14 mins of your life saved.

Destiner··on Nomad drained of $150m due to a coding mistake
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"
Destiner··on Nomad drained of $150m due to a coding mistake
If that endpoint was made public by mistake, anyone using it might be held responsible.
Destiner··on Open source is not about you (2018)
Thing is, different people have different goals for open source, and that’s perfectly fine.
Destiner··on Open source is not about you (2018)
Dunno, made me chuckle a bit.
Destiner··on Substack is laying off 14% of its staff
Selling picks and shovels to those who sell picks and shovels is a lucrative business, huh?
Destiner··on YaLM-100B: Pretrained language model with 100B parameters
You don’t need ai for that, tons of ppl here in russia will do it for pennies.
Destiner··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
I'd suggest stop using 3rd party font hosting altogether and adopt something like Fontsource [1]. That way, no reliance on 3rd parties, full privacy, and full control over font file changes (yeah, apparently, fonts are changed from time to time).

Destiner··on Dan's Tools
I used this a lot to work with timestamps until I switched to Raycast and made an extension to do the same.
Destiner··on Y Combinator for Mittelstands?
I believe even in US not many ppl have access to 100k in debt (and usually that debt would be tied to you not the company)

But even besides, there’s plenty of third world-ish countries with lots of talent and no easy money.

Destiner··on What One-person SaaS Healthchecks.io uses for hosting, hardware and software
I believe it’s the opposite? In a large org, you can have a dedicate team managing your servers. When you’re a one man business, you want to abstract as much as possible to focus on value proposition.
Destiner··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3 (2021)
Since you mentioned Zcash and Namecoin, do you have an opinion on ENS, Aztec Protocol, and zkSync? They are trying to solve the similar problems that projects you mentioned do, and somewhat fall into Web3 umbrella.
Destiner··on AutoAnimate – Add motion to web apps with a single line of code
Afaik it allows setting the animation duration, which should help a bit
Destiner··on Sam Bankman-Fried Described Yield Farming and Left Matt Levine Stunned
Is it "unregulated markets" that make all the difference somehow? Aren't $tsla, $zm, $coin ponzis as well?
Destiner··on We deploy to production over 100 times a day
I think the idea is more about "avoid bundled changes that are harder to debug and roll back". A change doesn't have to be a new feature, might be a bug or typo fix.
Destiner··on GitHub will require 2FA by the end of 2023
Wonder whether it's related to attack on Heroku.
Destiner··on Show HN: Prevent your computer sleeping with just a webpage
I’ve been using 10 hour videos of black screen with success.
Destiner··on Link: Simple, secure one-click payments by Stripe
How secure is that? It’s pretty easy to intercept SMS.
