DemiGuru··on British entrepreneur sells group chat app Sphere to Twitter
Correct me if I am wrong - but Twitter is reminding me of what Yahoo! has become when it was acquiring various companies/services. Being acquired by Yahoo! meant a death sentence to the service and company.
DemiGuru··on Lawmakers give Amazon ‘final chance’ to clear up testimony
The letter says the antitrust subcommittee is considering referring the case to the Justice Department for criminal investigation. It accuses the world’s biggest online retailer of at least misleading Congress and possibly outright lying.
DemiGuru··on Apple silently fixes iOS zero-day, asks bug reporter to keep quiet
As an apple fan myself, I agree that this type of practice renders the platform less secure rather than more secure. Everyone ends up losing.
DemiGuru··on Firefox Now Sends Your Address Bar Keystrokes to Mozilla
I’ll grant you that it’s a possibility. But it’s unsettling when your clipboard has your recently used password.
DemiGuru··on Firefox Now Sends Your Address Bar Keystrokes to Mozilla
Sadly It doesn’t come as a complete surprise to me. About 2 years ago using Firefox Focus on iOS I came across an odd behavior - each time I launched the app it was accessing and reading the device’s clipboard. I called it out to Mozilla both through the app review and Mozilla support. The only response I got was that it was a feature. That I misunderstood what they were attempting to do. They removed that “feature” in the following version.
DemiGuru··on Google search’s next phase: context is king
Google is making a change to its search results with the goal of improving the media literacy of online users. The company is expanding the capabilities of its “About this Result” feature, launched earlier this year, to also now include information about the source itself, including its description from Wikipedia and what the site says about itself, as well as news, reviews, and other context that can help people better evaluate unfamiliar or new sources. It will also point users to other information about the same topic, to point users to other sources of information that may be related to the user’s original query.
DemiGuru··on Apple's Texas Problem
"... it’s untenable for Apple, or any other company, to “support our employees’ rights to make their own decisions regarding their reproductive health” and ask any woman to work for the company in a state with a law like Texas’s. An immediate hiring and construction freeze in Texas — explicitly tied to this outrageous law (which makes no exceptions for rape or incest) — is the only tenable action compatible with Apple’s stated values..."
DemiGuru··on FBI Had Ransomware Decryption Key for Weeks Before Giving It to Victims
Fighting ransomware is filled with security trade-offs.

DemiGuru··on KrebsOnSecurity Hit by Huge New IoT Botnet “Meris”
If "Bad bot" traffic now accounts for a quarter of all internet traffic. Increasing by 6.2 percent from the previous year, bad bot traffic now represents no less than a quarter of all internet traffic. At this rate where is the Internet headed? Are we destined to contend with a slowdown in overall network performance as result? (https://www.imperva.com/blog/bad-bot-report-2021-the-pandemi...)

DemiGuru··on Adult site leaks data of cam models
These include scans of documents that prove the model's age, things like ID cards, birth certificates, and passport scans. Also included were performer release forms and profile information. This is particularly bad given the sensitive nature of the work and the need to maintain the personal privacy and safety of the X-rated web stars. There is also the risk that, as the records from virtually every occupied part of the world, that LGBTQ+ performers in some areas could be at risk of persecution.
DemiGuru··on Blackout Bug: Boeing 737 cockpit screens go blank if lands on specific runways
It’s a different model it’s 737-800. Different plane model while still within the 737 family.
DemiGuru··on Panopticlick
Not if you’re using the same browser along with the same settings.
DemiGuru··on Pinboard After Delicious Shutdown (2011)
For what it's worth - Yahoo did not build Delicious (Del.icio.us) - They bought it and left it to die much like they did with Flickr R.I.P.
DemiGuru··on Why I stuck with Windows for 6 years while developing Discourse
I know I would come off as a contrarian but I cannot echo your experience. My experience with Linux and BSD translated quite well to macOS. I've been using all these OS's to varied degrees for over 20 years now (eek just realized it) I don't find macOS's problems to troubleshoot and resolve to be any different from Linux or BSD. Just my $0.02.
DemiGuru··on AirPods with Wireless Charging Case
You can route call announcements to the headphones but you'll need to interact with the phone in order to decline the call.
DemiGuru··on Xiaomi's global vice president Hugo Barra is leaving the company
I might be too sentimental (knowing that it's PR speak and therefore downplayed) the last paragraph strikes me as sheer hell.

"What I've realized is that the last few years of living in such a singular environment have taken a huge toll on my life and started affecting my health. My friends, what I consider to be my home, and my life are back in Silicon Valley, which is also much closer to my family. Seeing how much I've left behind these past few years, it is clear to me that the time has come to return,"

DemiGuru··on Republicans – Obamacare repeal will strip planned parenthood of funding
I think you're forgetting their religious constituents. And their attempt to appease/appeal to them. It is my understanding that this has been why evangelical christians have been voting for them.
DemiGuru··on Police seek Amazon Echo data in murder case
So true - I vividly recall my attempt to dictate "Dear Sir" that ended up appearing on the screen as "Down Server" no joke.
DemiGuru··on Video appears to show Uber self-driving car running red light in SF
Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez, reporting for the San Francisco Examiner:

The cab pulls up to a red light on Third Street in South of Market, by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A pack of cars flies through a yellow light, and one even drives through the first moment of a red light.

About three seconds after the light turned red, an Uber self-driving car can apparently be seen traveling through the red light at moderate speed as a pedestrian walks across the intersection on the right side of the intersection.

In its blog Wednesday, Uber wrote it launched self-driving vehicles in California without self-testing permits from the DMV because it has drivers in the vehicles. “We have looked at this issue carefully and we don’t believe we do (need permits),” Uber wrote.

Earlier Wednesday, a social media report spotted another self-driving vehicle running a red light near the Marina District.
DemiGuru··on Firefox Focus – a free, fast and easy to use private browser for iOS
Would you please elaborate how this is different from using Safari in Private Browsing mode? If I am not mistaken Firefox Focus on iOS would still use WebKit under the hood.

Edit: I'm not being facetious or sarcastic.

DemiGuru··on [dead]
So eloquent.
DemiGuru··on Graph of Netflix speeds shows the importance of net neutrality
IMHO I think the best response to that would be for Netflix to charge the ISPs that want to carry their service. Reverse subscription if you will. The demand is there, ISPs would be reluctant to alienate the customers even more.
