DemiGuru··on Microsoft Signing Key Stolen by Chinese
I would go even further and say that governments should consider having their own OS. There is no reason why Windows 10 and 11, with their ever increasing number of ads and information sieve, would belong there.

DemiGuru··on How Paris is preparing for the return of a hundred-year flood
Whomever comes after us, humans, better know to learn from our mistakes. Not waste time on made up deities, spiritual or material and focus on what really matters. The planet doesn't give two shits about you. You better listen or you too will be gone.
DemiGuru··on Microsoft Teams is adding Maybelline’s AI-powered ‘makeup’ filters
Now we need a filter that would clothe us. Come to a meeting with a T-Shirt and you appear to be with a suit and tie. Or the feminine equivalent.
DemiGuru··on Ask HN: Best app to read Hacker News on iPhone?
I recommend using Hack on iOS. Technically you can use it on macOS as well.

DemiGuru··on The Flooding in Vermont
"..Climate disasters, fueled by large-scale, human-driven changes in the global climate, are becoming more frequent. In the past few weeks in Vermont, we've had wildfire smoke from Canada forcing people to stay inside, a heat wave, and now this flooding. And Vermont is a place that is supposedly safer for climate refugees to go. But that's the thing about a global climate crisis: it's going to affect absolutely everyone absolutely everywhere."
DemiGuru··on Mullvad Leta: A search engine used in the Mullvad Browser
This service is not ubiquitous which is something I expect of a search engine. From my perspective the limitations lie with the fact you need to be logged-in to their VPN service in order to use it. Yes, it's a way to ensure that only paid customers can use it. But those paid customers will only be able to use it on their personal devices. Nowhere else. Most if not all work environments block third party VPNs.
DemiGuru··on Every Louisiana driver's license holder exposed in cyberattack
I strongly recommend that you freeze your credit. It’s not the end all be all but it’s a good way to keep entities from applying for loans, credit cards or open accounts in your name. I don’t know what is the equivalent measure one can take outside of the US.

DemiGuru··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
Very shortsighted IMHO. By keeping both they will be broadening the appeal of their cars to a larger segment of the market. All in favor of a subscription model??

"Buyers of GM EVs with the new systems will get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant, a voice command system, at no extra cost for eight years, GM said. GM said the future infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify's music service, Audible and other services that many drivers now access via smartphones"

DemiGuru··on Transmission v4.0
Finally... j/k I'm glad to see that it's still being actively worked on. The now previous version has appeared to be languishing for a long time now.
DemiGuru··on Oh Supreme Court insurance policy doesn't cover ransomware attack on software
As a judge I would have focused on the intent behind the policy not just the wording. Showing that the insurance issuer acted in bad faith
DemiGuru··on Researchers discover how music could be used to trigger deadly pathogen release
I have to admit that the headline is over-the-top, but the article is interesting
DemiGuru··on Twitter may have lost more than a million users since Elon Musk took over
They are making the differentiation between actual people/accounts and bots.
DemiGuru··on Microsoft Teams stores auth tokens as cleartext in Windows, Linux, Macs
What I think you're missing is the possibility of using these tokens as an attack vector in this case - social engineering. Impersonating a senior manager or a C level entity. So while on the surface you can say that the risk is minimal this can be damaging to a business provided you impersonate the "right" person.
DemiGuru··on The Soviet kiss gone but not missed

DemiGuru··on ‘I didn’t win the election’: Trump admits defeat in session with historians
Because a large portion of the US population, his supporters, believes the the last elections were "stolen". He says that he plans to run again in 2024. It's not over. I wish it was.
DemiGuru··on Microsoft is testing ads in the Windows 11 File Explorer
This might be an indication of the type of ads Microsoft already embeds in Windows 10's start menu: https://i.redd.it/bfc336ql88sz.png

DemiGuru··on Microsoft is testing ads in the Windows 11 File Explorer
This has the potential to become a serious security risk. Picture the following - you're running File Explorer with admin creds, all while invoking a malvertisement.

DemiGuru··on Zuckerberg wants to be the hero of the metaverse because Facebook is boring
MZ is attempting to ensure higher engagement with the users. Currently FB engagement is relegated to said user's spare time. The goal is to ensure that while on FB or in the metaverse if you will. The user is fully immersed and can "exist" there without any middle people. Squeezing out maximum engagement. FB's version of "The Matrix" with almost everything it implies.
DemiGuru··on Twitter admits bias in algorithm for rightwing politicians and news outlets
https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2021/rml-polit...

A blog post by Rumman Chowdhury, Twitter’s director of software engineering, and Luca Belli, a Twitter researcher, said the findings could be “problematic” and that more study needed to be done. The post acknowledged that it was concerning if certain tweets received preferential treatment as a result of the way in which users interacted with the algorithm tailoring their timeline.

“Algorithmic amplification is problematic if there is preferential treatment as a function of how the algorithm is constructed versus the interactions people have with it. Further root cause analysis is required in order to determine what, if any, changes are required to reduce adverse impacts by our Home timeline algorithm,” the post said
