DecoySalamander··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Losing my home would suck, but the prospect of having a semiconductor fab in my country, in my city even, is so exciting that I would be 100% on board with it.
DecoySalamander··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
The only losers are foreign adversaries who would prefer it if your country didn't develop high-tech infrastructure and businesses.
DecoySalamander··on Codex pricing to align with API token usage, instead of per-message
Not really. Many scenarios where that would mean spending 50x the time or hiring a team.
DecoySalamander··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Maybe not weeks, but there was extensive damage and parts of Berlin went dark https://edition.cnn.com/2026/01/07/europe/berlin-power-outag...
DecoySalamander··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
It would be highly impractical to go to war with all of them at once, but USA can still fix one country at time. Venezuella, Iran, hopefully Cuba next.
DecoySalamander··on Turn Dependabot off
Kitchen knives actually do have safety features, such as non-slip handles and finger guards, which users appreciate. I certainly do. Users also appreciate safeguards in cli tools, such as not deleting all data if input happens to be slightly wrong. Sure, you could design your tool to be used exclusively by leet hackers, but the idea of sanitizing your inputs is not completely preposterous.
DecoySalamander··on Kimwolf Botnet Swamps Anonymity Network I2P
Why not? It wouldn't be acceptable in any other context - like running a lawn mower that spits oil onto your neighbor's lawn.
DecoySalamander··on Turn Dependabot off
There is a plausible scenario in which a user finds some malicious example of cli params for running your command and pasts it in the terminal. You don't have to handle this scenario, but it would be nice to.
DecoySalamander··on Starlink updates privacy policy to allow consumer data to train
The most interesting data running through Starlink is Ukrainian and Russian military comms (including feeds from drones). I wonder if Musk actually plans to tap into that.
DecoySalamander··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
You will need to implement some very invasive issuing mechanism to ensure that only those with a pulse can procure new keys. Even then, keys will still be bought or stolen - as was the case with pre-Elon Twitter checkmarks.
DecoySalamander··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
Bots can authenticate just as well as human users. Both bots and trolls are completely different set of issues that cannot easily be solved, regardless of your approach.
DecoySalamander··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
USA is not Russia. I don't think an order could ever be made to level a "rebellious" city, and even if it were, it would never be followed.
DecoySalamander··on The Overcomplexity of the Shadcn Radio Button
> How doable is it with vanilla css?

Under all of the framework complexity that specific look is still achieved with CSS. In fact, you could rip out the CSS they use with very little modification and pair it with a ~five-line React component that doesn't require any third-party imports.

DecoySalamander··on Briar keeps Iran connected via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when the internet goes dark
Most of Ukraine doesn't need to do it. The internet infrastructure is largely intact and very decentralised. The biggest challenge is the lengthy power outages, but mobile networks keeps running thanks to generators.
DecoySalamander··on The Performance Revolution in JavaScript Tooling
I think that there are more apps that are better off as web apps (cross platform and sandboxed) than not.
DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
From a purely moral standpoint, my answer would be "yes, absolutely." Unfortunately, most of these interventions are not practically possible. Taking out a dictator in US's backyard is so much easier (and easier to do bloodlessly) than any of these examples.
DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
I'd just call the police, since they're more powerful than your average robber.

Maduro's remaining cronies could call on Russia for help since they just signed a military alliance. However, that's not likely to work.

DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
> maybe slightly further cementing that the US will not come to Taiwan's aid

Isn't that the opposite? The US just demonstrated that it can still conduct military operations, and the presence of Chinese envoys in the country does not deter it in any way. As of now, China has one fewer source of oil it can rely on in case of an invasion.

DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
The difference is that Russia's goal is the annexation of most or all Ukrainian territory, the looting of the country and the erasure of its national identity. Without western support, Ukraine would be in a much worse state than it is now.

Whatever US goals are, it seems they are not pushing forward after snatching Maduro.

DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Fight back whom? US is already out with "no further action" planned according to Rubio.
DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
It's not entirely unexpected - you must have missed the recent deployment of the US Navy in the region, which looked like a naval blockade. But this operation is certainly daring - far more impressive than simply blowing Maduro up with a drone strike, which I personally expected.

It's justified by portraying Maduro as a drug kingpin responsible for the fentanyl epidemic in the US. He is also blamed for some gang activity.

DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Why bother monitoring junk food purchases when we can watch videos of helicopters flying over Caracas being uploaded almost in real time?
DecoySalamander··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Another difference that has not been mentioned in other comments is that: The US is not completely delusional about its military capabilities and could actually complete this invasion in three days. In fact, it may already be over, as Maduro have been captured.
DecoySalamander··on You Need to Ditch VS Code
It's all-round horrible advice. Once you have developed an understanding of 'fundamental operations', such as code formatting and file operations — and, realistically, you will already have done so if you are doing any programming — the next step is to automate them so that they take no time or mental energy, leaving you to work on things that matter. IDEs help with that.

Incidentally, the reason the tabs vs. spaces debate has died down is the proliferation of autoformatting. It really doesn't matter once you don't have to spend your precious time manually aligning code.

DecoySalamander··on Maybe you’re not trying
It doesn't sound that far-fetched. The stalker probably told her that he was planning to join her company and meet her, which gave her enough information to find his name. Once she had his name, she could find his profile on social media and see who his friends were.
DecoySalamander··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
> An autocratic one may use them when the leader is close to defeat as one last "f*ck you"

I don't think that could realistically work. The suicidal leader would need buy-in not only from the military command, but also from the numerous operators responsible for preparing and conducting the launches. Everyone involved would be presented wiath a choice between signing death sentenses for themselves and their loved ones or trying their luck with whatever enemy they were facing.

DecoySalamander··on Solarpunk is happening in Africa
I think it's more of a link with a nice title getting 700+ upvotes. IMO many (and most non-tech) articles linked on HN are bad and most of their value lies in them being a conversation starter.
DecoySalamander··on App Store web has exposed all its source code
I wanted to write, 'They have to load the entire catalogue for a category, including all the images. What did you expect?' However, having looked into it a bit more, it seems that they didn't particularly care about optimising load times.
DecoySalamander··on End of Japanese community
Not a native speaker, but to me it reads as canned or AI generated response that acknowledges nothing in the post besides there being some kind of tiny disagreement. I don't see how "I'm sorry for how you feel about this" can be inteprented as anything other than "I'm not at fault, and I'm sorry I'll have to spend time pacifying you".

Feels extremely disrespectful.

DecoySalamander··on URLs are state containers
> I genuinely don't understand why people don't get more upset over hitting refresh on a webpage and ending up in a significantly different place.

I'm in the opposite camp - I find it extremely annoying when sites clutter up the browser history with unnecesarly granular state. E.g. hitting "back" button closes a modal instead of taking me to the previous page.
