DeathArrow··on IBM Bob
31 years after Microsoft Bob, IBM releases it's own IBM Bob. :)
DeathArrow··on Quasar 438B: Europe's Leading AI Model
So "Europe's Leading AI Model" is just a modified Chinese model which does worse than the better Chinese models?

It seems Europe is many years behind in tech. Maybe for AI models they are just a decade behind, but as far as producing hardware capable to run SOA models they lag tens of years.

DeathArrow··on Quasar 438B: Europe's Leading AI Model
>I don't want my model to reflect the views of American oligarchs or Chinese cadres. I want European values of enlightenment and humanitarianism to be the default.

I don't want AI models to reflect any kind of values whatsoever. I have my own views - thank you - and I don't need other throwing their values in my face using AI.

I prefer AI models not being trained ideologically.

DeathArrow··on Waymo in Dallas
What about the problems negative externalities from unchecked crowding and bus culture? Like overcrowding, sky high prices for housing, very high prices for everything, broken infrastructure that is to expensive to fix and over capacity?
DeathArrow··on Waymo in Dallas
>so that the people who live in them aren't unfairly pushing costs onto other people in society

>The money generated from these endeavours could be used to fund the development of mass public transportation infrastructure in more, dense, sustainable areas

So you still want to tax some people to subsidize other people. Why?

DeathArrow··on Waymo in Dallas
In Germany they penalize using cars by taxing cars and fuels. They reward using public transport by subsidizing it. Car owners pay so public transit users get cheaper rides.

So people are using public transit in Germany not because they love to but because they are forced to.

And the system is far from perfect, Germans are complaining because public transportation is having a lot of delays. You can't reach every point you need, you have to wait and some times public transportation is dirty and filled with dirty, rude, violent people, drug addicts and drunks. Not a lovely way to travel.

And there are also other parts for reducing the pollution like DPF, EGR and Adblue systems.

Unfortunately they also reduce the reliability.

DeathArrow··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
Just a little taste of the European bureaucracy.

The whole reality is much worse.

DeathArrow··on Nim Conf 2026 (Online, Sat June 20)
It's nice seeing Nim has some activity.
DeathArrow··on GLM 5.2 Performance Benchmarks
One or two more releases and they will reach Fable level.
DeathArrow··on EU Commission looking at practical consequences of Anthropic decision
Poor decisions from politicians continue to bite us harder and harder.
DeathArrow··on EU Commission looking at practical consequences of Anthropic decision
Our best hope for non US citizens is for the Chinese companies to continue to improve their models.
DeathArrow··on If Claude Fable stops helping you, you'll never know
>but I don't think the rate of improvement of compute/watt will match the previous decades.

Unless we invest heavily in research and find new way to do chips. But I think there's not enough motivation and money to do that.

DeathArrow··on If Claude Fable stops helping you, you'll never know
>But, history says the supercomputer of today will fit in your pocket in a few years.

That was Moore's law saying that. And it seems Moore's law slowed down quite a bit for now.

DeathArrow··on If Claude Fable stops helping you, you'll never know
>Unfortunately this has been happening almost forever. You can spend 10s of thousands of $$ design, prototyping, building & marketing anything, whether a physical product or software & some company where the wages are lower are going to come along, build it cheaper (not necessarily better quality either) and ship it to the world.

>As a result, the other countries import more stuff "because it is cheaper" and eventually local manufacturing dwindles away to virtually nothing. That is the case here in Australia. Our manufacturing base has shrunk to stuff all compared to what we had 30 years ago & as a result we are poorer as a nation for it

Then the companies in that country need to learn how to be more competitive and governments need to learn how not to overregulate, overtax and raise barriers.

DeathArrow··on Ultrafast machine learning on FPGAs via Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks
I know enough to understand this is interesting but sadly I don't know enough to understand how it works.
DeathArrow··on Claude Fable 5
In a few months they will have Fable level models costing 10 times less and with less safeguards.
DeathArrow··on Delacroix's Entry of the Crusaders into Constantinople Restored
Sure, not everything is motivated by greed. I didn't mean that.
DeathArrow··on Delacroix's Entry of the Crusaders into Constantinople Restored
They justified it by religion but they really wanted to rob and mug. And this happened many times across history and will continue to happen: people claiming they are fighting for an ideal but really just wanting to gain power and money.
DeathArrow··on Go Experiments Explained
For C# is fun using intrinsics, you can almost match C speed for some tasks.
DeathArrow··on Ask HN: Is the web for machines (/llm.txt) the one we wished we had as humans?
I tried it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48410589`/llm.txt

Result: no such item.

From where do you got the idea that adding /llm.txt to urls will produce markdown?

DeathArrow··on Communication on European Tech Sovereignty, and an EU Open-Source Strategy
Europe started going backwards from some time. Energy is becoming more expensive, raw materials are becoming more expensive, industry is thickening, jobs are closed, education is not ok, most important tech developments are happening elsewhere, we don't have a thriving startup environment, most large tech companies are established elsewhere.

Maybe we will wake up at some point and do something.

Discourses won't put foot on the table and won't help with economic competition.

DeathArrow··on SpaceX, Other Mega IPOs Denied Fast Index Entry by S&P
>All that an inclusion of these new companies would accomplish is a bailout of their stockholders by pension funds and ETFs where millions of regular people shoulder all the downside risk.

The purpose of an index is to provide a benchmark of the market, not to build funds that follow the index.

DeathArrow··on South Korean forums will need to scan every images with AI censorship tools
>The problem is that using an AI censorship tool requires purchasing a solution from a specific vendor.

This smells of corruption.

DeathArrow··on South Korean Forums Will Need to Scan Every Images with AI Censorship Tools
Can't they simply move their hosting and domains to other countries?
DeathArrow··on Azure Linux 4.0 is Microsoft's first general-purpose Linux
>MS will never contribute to things such as Wine and Proton and kill its golden goose.

I think Microsoft is contributing to Linux kernel. Their golden gooses are Azure and Office which have nothing to do with Wine and Proton.

It wouldn't be too weird if they will release a win32 compatibility layer for Linux in the future as they might not want to maintain a full operating system.

DeathArrow··on Gemma 4 12B: A unified, encoder-free multimodal model

Can you instruct it to use a lsp?
