Dazzler5648··on Women were never meant to give birth on their backs
Mmmm… when they see their profits from medical interventions go down when women start trusting their bodies, they’ll nix that trial STAT.
Dazzler5648··on Women were never meant to give birth on their backs
Keep guessing. There are other reasons most women end up in the beds. (I’ve worked L&D and am a woman.)
Dazzler5648··on Women were never meant to give birth on their backs
As a woman it will be neat/cute to watch YC men discuss this one. If anyone is really curious how this happened in American (and spread) I highly recommend the book “Born in the USA” by Marsden Wagner.

TL;DR men saw money/opportunity in stealing women’s confidence in their natural and intuitive ability to give birth, built up tools and laws around it, and now we are stuck with a high caesarean AND fatality rate even despite this “progress.”

I went to school to be a hospital midwife until I discovered what a sad racket it is. No wonder we also have high rates of postpartum depression.

Dazzler5648··on I found 39 Algolia admin keys exposed across open source documentation sites
Thanks for this. I was maybe using one of these keys until this morning. When I logged in at dashboard.algolia.com and went to Settings -> API Keys, I found that none of the keys (Search, Analytics, Usage, Monitoring) matched the key I was using on a frontend. I made a decent attempt looking for that old key anywhere in their admin panels and could not find it. poof!

So perhaps at some point, they were only giving admin keys (because I don't remember there being a choice; and I would think given the choice I'd make the right one) and when called out (or sometime prior) realized the problem and made a new Settings -> API Keys page. Currently on the page the first one listed is the Search Key, with the subtext "This is the public API key which can be safely used in your frontend code. This key is usable for search queries and it's also able to list the indices you've got access to."

Dazzler5648··on Fighting the age-gated internet
On Monday it was TIL that in my state (the big Mormon one) I cannot view Pornhub… until I turn on my VPN. What a joke.

That big Mormonny Pornhub landing page puts up a privacy fight worth reading - and the woman on it is fully clothed!

Dazzler5648··on M8.7 earthquake in Western Pacific, tsunami warning issued
I was parked at Selzer beach in Seaside, Oregon when the earthquake/tsunami news hit around 7:30pm. Within 30 minutes it was impossible to buy gas without queueing and now there is a pretty steady stream of cars heading out of town. As of 9pm it’s been upgraded to a warning up and down the coast. I was just thinking of tsunamis the two days ago in the Del Rey beach parking lot, where I noticed the locals seemed to park at the exit end of the lot, facing out. I moved my car to match because that just makes sense.
Dazzler5648··on Every part on a bicycle is safety critical
This piece seems ignorant of regular people's realities. Many people cannot afford the luxuries of this elusive fancy "safe" bike with well-engineered parts, kept on a professional maintenance schedule. I suspect this really isn't an issue for most HN readers, and the fear-mongering just heats simmering angst. Remember a cure for angst is to 1) ride your bike and 2) donate time and resources your local bike repair cooperative or homeless shelter.

Author seems to forget the most important part of the machinery is the rider. What a glorious machine! He also seems to forget that millions of people in the world are riding bikes, motorbikes, and cars scrapped together from whatever they can afford or find. Forced to accept the risk, they usually get where they're going. I wonder does the author check out the maintenance of every Uber he hops into? "Let me see your torque wrench!?"

I've built and maintained all my own bikes since around 2005 with no training. It doesn't take a genius or a torque wrench to keep a bike rolling. I recently dropped my standards quite a bit on two bikes: One where I took a decent 2021 FS trail MTB I'd maybe ridden ten times on a black diamond downhill singletrack and another where I took a 1998 HT MTB with seized shifters, no grips, crusty, barely-functioning brakes and a sun-baked Hellraiser-looking rear tire held together only by a thin sheet of kevlar(?) around the streets of Portland, Oregon for three weeks wearing no helmet. I know, I'm a monster.

As an aside, I ride a 2005 Yamaha YZ250 (dirt motorcycle) my ex maintains... that feels sorta... dangerous.

Dazzler5648··on Malware found in official gravityforms plugin indicating supply chain breach
"The infection does not seem to be widespread, which could mean that the backdoored plugin was only available for a very short period of time and only delivered to a small number of users."
Dazzler5648··on Michael Madsen has died
Last night, only hours before he died, I chose to watch Thelma and Louise. I was really struck by his character this time around, particularly in the diner and motel scenes. He absolutely nailed a male archetype I’m familiar with as a woman: the un-self-aware douche, and he managed it with Susan Sarandon staring at him. Chef's kiss and RIP you gorgeous thing.
Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
The vasectomy gives you God status IMO, and dang, for cheap!
Dazzler5648··on Only 5.3% of US welders are women. After years as a professor, I became one
Are there actually any women in this conversation? I find many of the comments at YC to be obnoxiously male dominant and condescending, this comment section included. It's been frustrating me for quite a while now.

Would guess only 5.3% of YC readers are female. And would say, it's posh, not "real world," and it's not comfortable even though I'm a very strong woman - and a welder.

Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: Who uses WordPress for their primary income?
I do. This is a crushing blow, and I'm feeling scared. I have plugins in the repository, and thousands of paying customers who have upgraded said plugins, and things just feel... unstable. That's not to mention the many, many websites I've built for clients who, should they catch wind of this bad WP mojo, will want at least an explanation. And I can't explain it, because it's insanity.
Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
As someone who spends time in Eastern and rural California, I can totally see 'em taking up arms! A lot of Californians are already in militias. There are plenty of roiling pockets elsewhere outside these red counties, too. Don't get too comfortable with assumptions about "blue" states.
Dazzler5648··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
I rarely live anywhere near a gym with that sort of setup, but sure, that's basic for anyone van dwelling near a city. #remotelife
Dazzler5648··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
I've spent two weeks combined solo off trail just wandering Death Valley, and will say I could have gone much longer. There's a lot more water back there than people realize, and parts of the year are colder than they are hot. HOWEVER, as a close friend of a friend of the superintendent and someone privy to SAR details, I'm telling ya, even on trail (on road) it's just not a safe place for most people once it's over 95° or so. Forget 110°! Many people suck at decision-making, and even more so once warm and suffering electrolyte imbalances. The Germans were some of _many_ to perish in Deva.
Dazzler5648··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
Vanagon owners already have a network app (VanAlert) that's free (donation encouraged). We use one another's driveways and tools, and watch out for stolen vans. That feels like "community." This venture feels entirely like something else, like someone trying to make cash off a different type of van/RV dweller. Cringe Not sure I'd partipate, even if I do have property near two national parks!
Dazzler5648··on Show HN: Van, truck or car camp for $0 a night
Been vanlifing for ten years, I pee in a jar in my van just fine. It's POOOPING that's complicated, many days.
Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I built a system like Kyle Gabriel's (using his tutorial) and I grow mushrooms with it in a small tent, running Mycodo on a Raspi. This has probably been my most interesting tech I built just for myself, and my sanity. But credit where it's due: thanks Kyle!
Dazzler5648··on Call yourself titles
I'm going to call myself a developer. Can't hurt!
Dazzler5648··on The Hunt for the Death Valley Germans (2012)
I have met, played with, and admire several Inyo County SAR members, and have only had iffy encounters with the Inyo Sheriffs so far, so in a way I aligned with what the author said. Luckily this man's blog post has nothing to do with you or anything that happened during your time, everyone is entitled to their unique/weird experiences and opinions, and you don't need to defend anyone.

The author sometimes seems a bit unaware that despite being aligned with Riverside Mountain RU, he's not really credentialed to be mixing and gaining access to the ear or information of all the other involved agencies. After he was essentially the source of a leak (the bank card) and had moved evidence, folks might have been justifiably hesitant to enlist him and/or engage him fully. Plus he accomplished something they weren't able to. Annoying! It's a premise for a great story that he inserted himself in this puzzle, and he got to see a whole heck of a lot of puzzle pieces, but does he deserve to place the last few pieces? And might he be a little bit bitter that he wasn't "better recognized" for his work? People are just people. Once we find them rotting in the desert we maybe realize that none of the little stuff matters.

I thank you endlessly for your service.

Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: What was your “Oh shit” moment with regards to your health?
You're welcome. I forgot to mention some geekery that's helping - a fitness watch! I got the Garmin Venu 2s. I'm benefiting from keeping an eye on my stress via HRV data. I'm forced to realize certain things ARE actually stressful when I didn't believe they were. Also I'm encouraged to guard my sleep and not over-do it if I've had a bad night's sleep. It's re-training me.
Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: What was your “Oh shit” moment with regards to your health?
"It's navigating your own relationships where people dispense unsolicited and demeaning advice while also sometimes distancing themselves from you. It's horrible."

I relate to most of this because I used to take care of people having very similar experiences in a big city hospital network. But it's those last couple things you said that hit home the hardest. I'm at the point nearly two years into a dark battle where I've come to terms with the fact I lost most my friends... but I'm excited about the higher caliber friends I'll have going forward, especially since I'm learning to love myself first (key). My best wishes for your strong recovery!

Dazzler5648··on Ask HN: What was your “Oh shit” moment with regards to your health?
Interesting range of responses here! I'm a 40-something PHP developer, and maybe one of the few ladies here! Since I'm lucky enough to be a lady, I'm also lucky enough to be more likely to suffer autoimmune diseases. In 2021, after the extreme stresses of you-know-what and resultant depression, and some heartbreaking personal losses, I noticed that my sore arms and hands had become something more and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I won't go into exactly how miserable this disease is except to say sometimes I wish I was dead. Since I have also developed a second autoimmune disease. 'Cuz usually if you have one, you'll get more. Collect them all!

My desperate quest to regain wellness (remission) has led me down all sorts of alt-health avenues. So far my greatest relief comes from the use of psychedelics (for inner work), Kratom (for pain), qigong (for exercise and release), breathwork (to repair my cells & ANS), and fasting (I achieved my best remission yet after a 7-day fast). Yeah, cuckoo. As a retired hospital RN, I am disillusioned enough with the state of medical care in the USA that I basically refuse to go. I could go on and on about what a shame this is. I have tried Prednisone (a typical first line of treatment) and trust me that medicine is hell. My sympathy to anyone who must be on that drug for life.

Over time it has become clear why I am sick. Prior to 2021 I considered myself healthy. I had great diet (vegetarian, organic) and earth-bound lifestyle. I was bit of an extreme athlete, having covered thousands of miles solo backpacking Death Valley, the High Sierra, and the Colorado Plateau. I spent most my time outdoors in the fresh air. Yet, because of childhood trauma I was broken inside, and I indulged in self-hatred. Until recently I was in denial about all that. I suffered strange symptoms for years and ignored them. Exiting denial and re-parenting myself, showing myself compassion, has been very helpful.

If I can help anyone who is feeling well, it'd be to say cherish your health and give love -- not advice -- to the sick. To the sick, I'd say, may you be happy, healthy, and free from suffering

Dazzler5648··on How to Befriend Crows
Google "birds catching diseases at feeders"
Dazzler5648··on How to Befriend Crows
Dang. I love how cute this "hack" seems, but at the same time I hate to see anyone advocating feeding wild animals. It not only violates Leave No Trace, but it also violates other people's enjoyment of the crows as wild animals, and violates the animals' right to stay wild. Stomachs never lie. As someone who lives in an extremely remote and wild part of the USA, it blows my mind to check in on social media and feeds like this where people have co-opted wild animals "poor lives" as something laid open to some sort of weird new manifest destiny. They animals are not here for our enjoyment or entertainment. They're not here to be used. Sure, feed the crows Cheetos etc. if you're cruel, but don't suggest to the Internet that other people do this, because it's just not right.

I definitely wasn't expecting the author to be a biologist. Where I live, fed wild animals are dead wild animals. Because you don't know when that animal who is now used to being fed is gonna break into the neighbors' houses or simply beg at the door, and get trapped or shot or poisoned or all three. It happens. Dang.

Dazzler5648··on A 100MW solar farm in Texas will mount panels directly on the ground
It's hilarious how some commenters are concerned about bird poop, when fact of the matter, birds die by the thousands each year in California alone either mistaking solar farms for lakes and attempting water landings, or by dying by fire in panels' collective solar flux. This pond will be covered in carcasses.

This type of solar farm is doomed to spend that money saved in either prevention and/or cleanup and repair.

Dazzler5648··on Why is Booz Allen renting us back our own national parks?
When an article like this so confidently (and incorrectly) declares that a scenic attraction is inside a National Park when it is not, I lose all faith and stop reading. If you don't know what type of government control The Wave is under, I don't believe I should be believing you.
