DayDollar··on Software engineering salaries come from one of three budgets
Missing the hackernews part of product to research and development,: Is your company planning to use the exponential growth nature of software to enter into a overlooked niche or rapidly take over a existing industry? In that case, product development does not really catch the situation. Cause using the situation, closing time window till competition appears or funds run out, is way more important than the product or its quality

DayDollar··on Zero-k: A libre sci-fi RTS game, with an economy based on metal and energy
Eh, no? Zero-k was there first, and gathered vital info. The original setup for spring rollout of games was thoroughly inadequat to supporting large number of gamers. Fuck, the first lobby server wrote match infos into a freaking textfile.

The first indicator of that popped up, when valve ended greenlight, and just greenlit all the things. Which propped Evolution RTS upon the steam front page for half a day, flooding the original lobby system and showing how inadequat the whole ecosystem was for that. The original Evo dev Forb learned from the whole mess after he returned from his day job.

Zero-k then learned the lessons, developed a ingui lobby, started the whole matchmaking and better server deployment, detached from the whole "one central server" thing of the spring eco system.

BAR did some graphical overhaul, with Floris, Beherith, Sprung and the whole original crew supported by new faces like Teifion and on and on. They optimized the Spring engine into a new version- more tailored to BARs needs and reworked alot of the stuff.

Its gpl open source, so the project order and who invented what is pretty flowy.. everybody copies from everybody, one progress is everyones progress..

DayDollar··on Zero-k: A libre sci-fi RTS game, with an economy based on metal and energy
Eh, the engine was a accident. It started out as a 3d-viewer, capable of replaying ta games by the svedish yankspankers (clan sy).

What started out as a viewer, escalated into a 106.0 version long engine, providing a war that consumes planets, each side with only one final wish - Total Annhilation at Zero-k, beyond all reason.

Naw, the community comes and goes ebbs and flows. Its mostly on recoil discord, some are still on the irc server, the rest is on the BAR discord.

DayDollar··on Humid Heat Can Kill Us Much Faster Than We Thought
So what can create dry air? Circulation chimneys and cool caverns were the moisture runs down the wall? I wouldnt want to rely on electricity in a wet-bulb.
DayDollar··on Generative AI could make search harder to trust
There will be a web of trust, with a valuation of nodes by trustworthyness. And people will get only one id for this. Ones name is ones value and a reputation will be a hard earned thing again.
DayDollar··on Pocket gets worse the more you use it (2019)
I wonder if it wouldnt make more sense to just train a Commentator Neural Net with the pages you collect. It then can "remind" you of similar pages you have seen before, directly in the page, with little floating comments like "..skip..." "..contradicts.. http:/link/x/y/z " "..actual paper link.." "..paper is p-hacked shovelware.." "..authors reputation.."

It could be trained to become your personal pre-reading assistant, similar to information accumulators and pre-evaluators in governments agencies or company hqs.

DayDollar··on Why is desalination so difficult?
It would rust and crusted with chalk and beneath that layer untouched.
DayDollar··on The Rot Economy
It also suspicously starts to look like planned economics, once the mono-duo-poly stage is reached.

Rare goods, long queues, no choice, bad products and the leadership is off, chasing its own tail in some basebal metric detached from the world. It even features market-libertarians having to defend practices like shredding perfectly fine goods in ware houses.

The moment the ussr was gone, the race horse finally could binge and become something very similar to the ussr economy, but instead of obsessing on tanks & steel, it focused on excel sheet virtual wealth wankery, disguising the slide back into the gilded age feudalism.

DayDollar··on Is parallel programming hard, and, if so, what can you do about it?
Ah, the old debate and approach. Centralize the control, Decentralize problem handling, centralize the knowledge needed for untangling parallelism, realize you just created a centralized authority, undoing the parallelism.

Then there is the physics engine view to all things. Data is just sand washing against the shoreline of parallel computation instances and interaction, is just sticking these dataparticles together, taking them out of the general flow to be interacted on in unison, carrying the resolution authority within them as long as they are "clumbed" together. Data is just particles, the programs interacting on it are just a limited number of program cells, traversing it and interaction clumps it together, making the processing of it slower, but also centralized to computation node. A centralized node, processing a huge clump of interacting data, even throws a sort of "relativity" shadow, as other, smaller, non interacting data, is processed faster and leaping ahead in the interactions.

DayDollar··on A deep-learning search for technosignatures from 820 nearby stars
The biggest problem i see in the dark forrest theory is the "interesting information" inwards growth. Basically, most of the external universe is boring, slow and drip fed to a ever faster progressing species. At some point its just to static "up" there, and most of the civilization turns inward towards the "infinite" fun space.

Its also very tricky to get the bretzel to become perfect, you need a real baker oven that can bring the heat. Then you dunk it into the solution, you shoot it into the oven, and leave the oven door open for about 2 minutes of the baking time. This allows for the "mirror" finnish of the bretzel, you only get when they are properly baked.

Frozzen with the lye solution already on it, then unfrozzen, salten and baked, will always be dryed bad bretzels, unless you dunk them into the lye solution after unfreezing. The "shop" baked bretzen will always be inferior.

DayDollar··on Planting trees not always an effective way of binding carbon dioxide
Ironically, ice fracking large amounts of stone and filtering atmosphere gas rich water through that is more effective. But you goto expell large amounts of energy to turn the rock "spongy".
DayDollar··on Archaeologists rebury ‘first-of-its-kind’ Roman villa
Which is why china, vietnam, and korea never recovered. That good old colonialist narrative has its place, but given enough time and counter examples, it just lacks the explenation power it once had. Which is a dangerous gap the left left open, for the racist idiots to settle in.

Regarding the region.

The societal rot had already set in way before that. The whole ottoman empire was on a down trend, ever since the trade went around them. Which is a good indicator how low value was whatever they themselves had to produce and to offer.

To life in the shadow and ruins of the glorious past, it burns all men for what are they but lowcast creatures, fallen from up high..

DayDollar··on A History of Lua (2001)
i dont know lambda was really easy to do it by onself.

filterdResult =

       lambda(Table,

        function(i)

          if i ~= 42 then return i; end

        end,
          setToFilterOut = {}
          function filterOutIfInSet(i, filterSet)

if not filterSet[i] then return i; end

           end

        etc..
        )
Combined with properly, once defined decision sets this is really powerful. Almost of all my game decisions are lambdas mit once global defined decisionsets for unittypes. If i want to change something, for a unit, i only insert its type into the corresponding decision set and suddenly it has that property. Like dropping a smooth stone into a pond without ripples.

Its similar simple to the javascript implementations, once functions are firstclass members.

Functional programming would be harder. You need alot of meta table, result hashing for that a + b hash(a) + hash(+) + hash(b) -> Resultlookup. So its doable, by the law of look it up yourself, it has been done.

DayDollar··on A History of Lua (2001)
In many scripting languages this is not the case, and you are ever only passing around references. Python comes to mind.

Lots of people obviously have a problem with this as it deeply different from the algebra derived assignment syntax.

local a = b creates a local copy, but even then, its not a deepcopy, containing references to other tables.

DayDollar··on Electric Vehicles Are Going to Suck; Here's Why [video]
Actually, there is a market position here, for somebody willing to venture. A chain of "bomb" defusers, who take the product, replace or remove the breakable components, add a modular bus and the ability to add other open source components - then you get a "forever" product. As long as the product works, you pay a small suscription per month.

How about a nice name. Eternia.

Anyon willing to invest?

At worst, you can still scim off as a middle man like some selective add blockers..
