Supply and demand, why would they bother improving the infrastructure if people can't use it? Either be an early adopter, and help progress or sit at the back and wait.

This human asked an LLM to generate a number and it came up with 42.

I asked why, "42 is famously "the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything" from Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It felt like a fitting choice for a random guess."

This was the original model of launchpad.net, it was supposed to be a hub of Foss that pulled in from the decentralised VCS's, and provide them all via bzr.

But bzr lost the battle, Canonical was slow to adopt Git, lack of investment in the platform, so it was another lunch that got taken from them.

Of course, Denmark is doing the fandango by not simply handing over the territory.

Same as the Ukrainian had the audacity to act as a sovereign nation and seek membership of alliances that benefited themselves.

Daviey··on Could a Claude Code routine watch my finances?
My primary bank, Monzo (UK) provides a full API and trigger webhook for events.

This has enabled me to make a WhatsApp bot that asks me to explain abnormal transactions (using an LLM for reasoning), and also have a pre-midnight sweep balance to savings account to maximise interest daily interest.

I also maintain a small daily balance, and if I spend money during the day it tops it up from the savings to maintain that low balance. If I need to spend more, I can move money manually.

Keeping the key in the same room as the padlock only protects against casual drive theft and secure disposal.

Personally I'm more worried about someone stealing the entire server or a local threat actor.

Sure, keep TPM to help with boot integrity, maybe even a factor for unlock, but things like Clevis+Tang (or Bitlock Network Unlock for our windows brethren) is essential in my opinion.

Yeah, that seems a sensible compromise.
Daviey··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
I can't agree with this. When they become voters, if enough people of that age bracket wanted to reversed it then they could elect a party that has it in their manifesto.

For example, some parties have a cannabis pledge and not enough people have wanted it as yet.

My son is 16, and will be impacted by this ban. He is constantly exposed to the temptation to smoke and vape. As a responsible parent, I want to do everything I possibly can to protect him and not become addicted.

We know that nearly all smoking starts before 26.

  - ~90% of daily smokers first tried cigarettes by age 18
  - ~95% had their first cigarette by age 20-21 (American Lung Association)
  - 98% first smoked by age 26 (National Cancer Institute)
So the probability of starting smoking after 21 is roughly 2-5%. If someone hasn't started smoking by 21, they almost certainly never will. The brain's decision-making capacity isn't fully mature until ~25. People are getting hooked before they're neurologically equipped to properly evaluate the risk. People do not start smoking when they are grown-ass-adults.

We owe our young people this protection, and I am a liberal.

But to take your point to full conclusion, Brexit was decided by the people that it impacts the least. And, "Since the Brexit referendum, 4+m voters have died (mainly Leavers), while almost 5m have reached voting age (overwhelmingly Remain), There is now a 1.6m majority for Remain - without anyone needing to change their minds". - https://www.thenewworld.co.uk/anti-brexit-britain-has-reache... - June 2023

> Why not just pass a law that says people born after 2008 have to pay higher taxes, and work longer hours for less pay? People should be equal under the law.

We already do this, the UK State Pension age is currently rising from 66 to 67 for those born on or after April 6, 1960.

This change affects, for example, those born between April 1960 and March 1961, who will have a pension age of 66 plus a set number of months.

When I was young, it was 65 for men and 60 for women (from the 1940s until 2010)

I've acknowledged everything you've said previously. Now why do you feel the need to continue it?

But I will add, they may have had a bad day, but that doesn't give the maintainer the freedom to be rude to others.

The fact is, I was polite, maintainer was rude, and I reacted badly to it and was worse.

But as you say, my choice was to not be further interested in the project... Which is what I said earlier.

Daviey··on Reallocating $100/Month Claude Code Spend to Zed and OpenRouter
Yeah, I take that. I've thought about it much of this evening.

I think at the time I was frustrated, it felt unfair and I couldn't understand it.

Then I thought, this guy probably does need more time off. Which was a genuine thought.

But that is where I should have stopped. The way i expressed it, whilst genuine thought, was expressed in a way which was passive aggressive. I am owning that.

Daviey··on Reallocating $100/Month Claude Code Spend to Zed and OpenRouter
You know, when I wrote that I genuinely meant it, or at least I think i did. It wasn't supposed to be passive aggressive. :(

But that doesn't negate the maintainer talking to people like that (and taking contributions without attribution).. and the net result is I don't want to use the software, and frankly they probably won't miss me.. so the end result is neutral.. I just find it sad.

Reluctantly, the dev seems to have a stinky attitude.

He went on an "OSS vacation", which is perfectly reasonable and said he'd be back on a certain date. I had a PR open for a trivial fix, someone asked when it would land. I shared he was still away. After his return I politely asked, "@badlogic hey, what can we do to progress this? Thanks x"

I then got what I would consider an abusive reply, because he confused me with someone else. In the meantime he extended his vacation. Didn't even think his shitty attitude was worthy of an apology, that HE confused me with someone else.

https://github.com/badlogic/pi-mono/discussions/1475#discuss...

And another other thing I fixed with no attribution, just landed it himself separately. https://github.com/badlogic/pi-mono/discussions/1080

and

https://github.com/badlogic/pi-mono/issues/1079#event-223896...

Now he's seemingly marked anything with my name on as a "clanker", despite all my changes being by hand.

I've been around open source enough to have a thick skin, but when i'm doing something "for fun" and someone treats you like that, i'd rather avoid it as far as possible. I certainly could not in good faith use this project for anything work related.

Slashdot/Reddit/Facebook etc all build communities, when they get too large they splinter until they become increasingly specific. You've done the opposite. I think you are going to need to group common products, then gradually break it out. ie, food -> deserts -> cakes -> chocolate cake -> chocolate cake from <shop> etc
Daviey··on Anthropic takes legal action against OpenCode
How does that make sense?

If Claude code can have great performance by optimised caching and Opencode doesn't.. I'll run out of quota using a third party client and have a terrible experience, and the choose to use Claude code instead because wit is superior.

So why not simple quota counting?

Daviey··on Revert "userdb: add birthDate field to JSON user records

Daviey··on Anthropic takes legal action against OpenCode
Ah, but the ToS I agreed to didn't state it.. they even admitted it wasn't clear and then unilaterally revised it.

And yes, I agree businesses must abide by the ToS, it would be too much of a business risk not to.. but individual users, using for their own purpose can make their own choice.

An individual choosing to not abide by their unfair ToS is perfectly reasonable and doesn't make them unserious or immature people, and it's pretty weak to make it an ad hominem attack.

But if you think their reasoning is solely that opencode has poor caching, then the solution is to make it chew through the quota quicker (which i think it already does), or provide guidance on how to do it better. The arms race of trying to block it will be a war they will eventually lose.

Daviey··on OpenCode – Open source AI coding agent
> Literally everyone does this. OpenAI is doing this with Codex, far more than Anthropic is.

And yet, OpenAI have publicly said they welcome OpenCode users to use their subscription package. So how are they being anti-competitive "far more" than Anthropic?

Daviey··on Anthropic takes legal action against OpenCode
You've still not explained why, you've just reasserted "because they said so".

What is the upside to Anthropic if we use ClaudeCode but not OpenCode? If it is such a loss leader, why would they even offer it? By using it, even within their terms, you are still abusing their good will. No?

(You also said the alternative to not liking the terms is to use their API. There is another alternative, which is to keep using it against their ToS and risk a ban. Or use a different provider. So the situation is more nuanced than "this" or "that")
