DaveSchmindel··on NoJS – Creating a calculator with only HTML and CSS
> Well, everytime you divide by zero, a puppy dies.

Welp, I was a pretty heartless bastard back in the days of getting my first scientific calculator.

DaveSchmindel··on Tinder just permabanned me or the problem with big tech
Where's your Tinder bio in this article? I can't imagine creating a new account and publishing something obscene on any social platform today without being flagged or worse.
DaveSchmindel··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
Uh oh. Putting off their original plans to shift to EV production, increasing their contract & temp worker pool only to then lay them off in certain "down" quarters to maintain their "no layoff" of FTEs policy, and now this.

Pun intended; what the heck is happening under the hood there?

DaveSchmindel··on Show HN: I redesigned my landing page to be as unprofessional as possible
Ah, so that's what a "Human" looks like.
DaveSchmindel··on Launch HN: Inflow (YC S21) – Self-help app for people with ADHD
Disclaimer: I really appreciate the mission statement here. As someone who suspects they are impacted by some sort of undiagnosed ADD/ADHD, it's really great to know I'm not alone in these thoughts and that there are people trying to make solutions for it.

That said, while everyone is up in arms about the payment model here, I'm more concerned with the nature of the app's content.

What I was expecting to be an interactive, attention-grabbing set of modules turned out to be a whole bunch of audio recordings and generic goal-setting form fields. I almost laughed when I was creating my first goal, because in the introduction video by the cofounder he makes a point to explain that, "Like many of you, I've invested in planners and organizers hoping that they would magically help me become more productive." Can someone from the team please explain how this app's first iteration is not simply the modern & digital version of planners and organizers? Which features will be able to help users with which ADHD side-effects?

To be frank, I had high hopes when I started this free trial, only to realize that it smells a bit like a newer version of the self-help tapes people would fall asleep to in the '80s.

DaveSchmindel··on Statement from Mark Zuckerberg
> ...industry-leading...

This self-proclaimed adjective was thrown in the mix five separate times within this note in an effort to explain how great the work that FB delivers is (and likely, to imply that the negativity applied to FB in the public eye is unfair).

Saying Facebook is "industry-leading" with respect to social media and technology is like saying Priscilla is your favorite wife, dude.

Put your money where your mouth is, or you'll likely continue to lose it as various outlets reported this week.

DaveSchmindel··on A quick and simple editor for cron schedule expressions
Ah! But crontab.guru is such a beautiful UI/UX! I'd argue it offers the user everything it needs to perform what it needs to perform.

I will painfully admit I hassle with going from PT/PDT --> UTC more than I should, but after a while it was pretty easy to commit a simple number of hours (+7/8, depending on daylight savings timing) to memory.

I used to use [Hour](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hour-world-clock/id569089415?m...) for MacOS to avoid this problem; I'm sure there's a similar or native solution for Windows & Linux as well.

DaveSchmindel··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
(1) I'm a bit frustrated, as a true Apple "bitch", at the irony here. As a loyal consumer, I am (likely) never going to be privileged enough to know exactly which part of Apple's budget allowed for this implementation to occur. I can only assume that such data would speak volumes as to _why_ the decision to introduce CSAM this way has come to light.

(2) I'm equally intrigued by the paradox that in order for the algorithms that perform the CSAM detection to work, it must require some data set that represents these reprehensible images (which are illegal to possess).

DaveSchmindel··on Curiosity damned the cat
I came here to provide similar, if not this exact feedback. I hadn't heard of the author before today and I only made it to the second labelled section of the essay before thinking, "Wow this reeks of arrogance and lack of self-awareness."
DaveSchmindel··on How to Get Better at Recursion
Or if you don't know what it entails, RE: space complexity issues within your runtime.

DaveSchmindel··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
To those who have invested time in making a "task breakdown table":

Have the benefits of contextualizing your short-term goals outweighed the cost in time it takes to make the table for small tasks?

DaveSchmindel··on The Light Phone
This entire endeavor smells like an exercise of reaping good design. When I received the first iteration, I was excited only from the moment of unboxing to the moment of my first call.

I truly enjoy the sentiment and message behind this product. IMO though, at the rate they're going and in the direction they're headed, a consumer is better off with existing products that have been offering what Light II does for decades.

DaveSchmindel··on The iPhone 11 Pro’s Location Data Puzzler
Regardless of this opinion on the author's understanding, don't you agree it's a little shifty that Apple is the only entity that can obtain the user's location after providing a user experience that gives the user the impression that they've disabled all location services...?
DaveSchmindel··on Apple admits iPhone 11 Pro still collects location data even when told not to
I think this particular point is what the article wishes to drive home. It seems awfully convenient that Apple is the only entity that can still obtain the user's location after giving them a user experience that makes it seem they have complete control over every possible feature that could access that information...
DaveSchmindel··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
Absolutely important to bring up. I don't care how creative you allow your developers to be while they leverage Ruby/Python/etc.; At the end of the day, they're accessing data from a DB and serving it to a client...
DaveSchmindel··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
In my opinion, this is the reason Java still _mostly_ remains the enterprise choice; When things are mostly boilerplate under the hood and following a small set of patterns and principles, it's really easy to onboard/ditch engineers.

That said, I like the motif brought up here, and I think the only thing lacking from the piece is how this stifles developers' engageability and creativity.

DaveSchmindel··on Apple Special Event [video]
I can imagine Apple has quite a few linguists on its payroll; They are still beating the words “beautiful” and “best” to death in their keynotes. It’s tough to not be excited about new features that are debuted upon each release, but it’s also getting monotonous to hear, “Product X is the _best_ version of its kind. Product Y is the _most_ <adjective> we’ve ever created and its pictures are simply _beautiful_.”
DaveSchmindel··on Show HN: A Chrome extension that tracks front-end JavaScript at runtime
I too was wondering why this particular extension made it to the front page...
