DaveExeter··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
...or, the seller has to subtract $95 from the asking price. This makes every used Peloton worth $95 less.

DaveExeter··on What makes gambling wrong but insurance right? (2017)
I would express it differently.

With insurance, you are guarantee to lose. To insure against a 10K risk, you have to pay 20K. 50% of your premium goes towards staff, advertising, profit, etc.

But you reduce variance.

DaveExeter··on Louisiana law will criminalize approaching police under certain circumstances
You might be living in fantasy-land.

In the real world, the police officer will arrest you for recording him, charging you with:

1) interfering with official duties.

2) Resisting arrest.

3) Felony assault on a police officer.

Remember, in a criminal trial, you have to prove your innocence. How do you prove you did not do something that a police officer, testifying under oath in a court of law, says you did?

DaveExeter··on Louisiana law will criminalize approaching police under certain circumstances
No, the purpose of this is to discourage people from recording police.
DaveExeter··on You Can Thank Private Equity for That Enormous Doctor's Bill
The problem is health insurance! Get rid of that and most problems vanish.
DaveExeter··on A myopia epidemic is sweeping the globe
I don't know why you're being downvoted, this has been my experience as well.

I had a problem with my eyeglass prescription creeping up by about 0.5 diopters every visit to the optometrist! I started wearing glasses that were about 0.75 diopters less powerful than my 20/20 prescription and my prescription stopped increasing.

Didn't get better, but it did stop increasing.

DaveExeter··on Biden set to levy 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs this week
Biden needs Michigan voters. That's all this is about.
DaveExeter··on The process of making a Japanese road bike at the Panasonic Bicycle Factory [video]
TIL Panasonic makes bicycles! I have never seen one in the wild.
DaveExeter··on FTC challenges 'junk' patents held by 10 drugmakers, incl Novo Nordisk's Ozempic
Because these tarifs do more harm than benefit.

The harm is diffused among many, the benefits accumulates to a few.

DaveExeter··on FTC challenges 'junk' patents held by 10 drugmakers, incl Novo Nordisk's Ozempic
> * Announced an end to the duty free period on Chinese solar panels to encourage U.S. manufacturing.

> * Announced tariff increases on steel to protect domestic producers

These are bad things.

DaveExeter··on Why DoorDash fees are so high [pdf]
That is part of the answer.

But the correct answer is -- they are high because there is not enough competition to force them lower.

DaveExeter··on Cost of developing new drugs may be lower than industry claims: trial
If you only had to pay 20% of the retail price of Microsoft Office, it would retail for $1250 and you would pay a $250 co-pay.
DaveExeter··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
AIPAC works behind the scenes.

They are very busy trying to get Finkelstein banned from Youtube as a "terrorist sympathiser"[1]

DaveExeter··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
That's the real reason!

AIPAC wants Tiktok gone because young people are getting objective information rather than the propaganda of mainstream "responsible" media. [1]

Tiktok is not a good thing for Genocide Joe either! He has been an Israeli puppet for decades. Thanks to Tiktok, being an Israeli puppet has become a political liability because Israel has lost its control over American minds.

DaveExeter··on A TikTok ban would deal a blow to creators, businesses and the American economy
It has already been cloned! It is called "Redz" [0]. If imitation is the purest form of flattery, Redz is pure flattery. Look at the UI images.

DaveExeter··on TikTok Ban Measure Attached to House Foreign Aid Bill, Boosting Odds of Passage

DaveExeter··on T-Mobile employees across the country receive cash offers to illegally swap SIMs

DaveExeter··on Boeing put Wall Street first, safety second ahead of Alaska Air blowout
I'm looking forward to Chinese competition in the aviation industry. This would benefit all players.
DaveExeter··on Ask HN: What is the biggest thing you've changed your mind about?
I feel the same, but more because of the mass murder.
DaveExeter··on China uses foreign firms to turbocharge its industry
"Bring in technology, absorb it, then re-innovate" A great strategy!

Chinese competition is needed to keep domestic manufacturers from becoming complacent.

DaveExeter··on Xiaomi releases electric car $4K cheaper than Tesla's Model 3
Only in China? Let us have it in the USA!

For those concerned about "selling the car at a loss" that happens with all new cars. Ford "loses" $36,000 per EV sold.

DaveExeter··on Visa, Mastercard Agree to Lower Swipe Fees, Settling Long-Running Lawsuit
>Merchants jack prices up to account for credit card fees.

This is simply wrong. If it was true, then merchants would not care about credit card fees!

DaveExeter··on You're targeted by disinformation networks more effective than you realize
I often assumed all the social media posts trying to convince young women to stay single and childless until it's too late were by bitter older women who want to trick other women into their same fate, because misery loves company!

Now I wonder if this is not just bitter old women but a calculated plot by our enemies to damage American society. Maybe it's a little bit of both.

DaveExeter··on It's Time for the Chicken Tax to Die
You've re-identified the winners, but you are still ignoring the losers!
DaveExeter··on Minor injuries after plane deploys parachute and crash lands
Once the parachute is deployed, the plane is totaled.

Every twelve years, the parachute and deployment rocket has to be replaced, at a cost of $20-30K.

I learned all that from this video:
