Data_Junkie··on Study of “moral grandstanding” helps explain why social media is so toxic
None of this is true. People do not seek better social status by arguing with unseen, unknown people, they seek social change. The status quo lies to limit the damage, because when unseen, unknown voices speak truth they cannot stop the change, which all the unheard voices want.
Data_Junkie··on To motivate people, talk about the context of the work to be done
Share what motivates you to be doing your work. If you are trying to motivate them to make more money, what do you think makes them some sort of different creature with some sort of differing motivation ?
Data_Junkie··on Why Does Tipping Still Exist?
Same reason all unnecessary things exist, it benefits rich people in the rich remaining rich and the poor remaining poor.
Data_Junkie··on Ask HN: Random upper back pain is ruining my life. At wits end. Anyone else?
Nerve compression. It's horrible, and can go from non-existent to disabling fairly quickly from inflammation. I spent most of last year getting 7 root nerves fixed. The trick is radio frequency ablation, which is once you identify the nerve causing the pain you use radio waves to cause a lesson on the nerve. This blocks the nerve from working. I didn't know this before, turns out we have a lot of nerves that don't really do anything but cause pain. Pain specialist have it down to a science, I highly recommend. Also, tingling or numbness is a telltale sign of nerve compression.

It can be an adventure identifying the correct nerve though. I found it well worth the inconveniences. There is also steroids that can be used for excessive inflammation too, but they tend to not like to use them unless they have too.
Data_Junkie··on PG&E may cut power to 850k California customers this weekend due to fire risk
The fire isn't because of lack of rain. Nothing has changed, but time and people. People are causing this, not nature.
Data_Junkie··on The American System of Tipping Makes No Sense
Tipping is banned legally and culturally more than it's allowed.
Data_Junkie··on PG&E may cut power to 850k California customers this weekend due to fire risk
A lot of people don't know about when they wanted to double rates a few years ago and were getting a huge backlash, they just starting turning off the power in "rolling blackouts" just because they were mad. After about a week all the anti rate increase talk stopped and the rates doubled and everyone just forgot about it. They are horrid people.
Data_Junkie··on PG&E may cut power to 850k California customers this weekend due to fire risk
That the age old failure of leadership could be blamed on the greed of the corporation. They are all complicit, ain't nothin' new.
Data_Junkie··on PG&E may cut power to 850k California customers this weekend due to fire risk
Oh please. That's so ignorant. It's been raining fine, it's horrid people that are new.
Data_Junkie··on Web Based Qt Design Viewer
Well you got the whole search and discover issue.
Data_Junkie··on Web Based Qt Design Viewer
You miss THE ENTIRE FUCKING POINT OF THE THING. You can search for the page that loads the program. Doesn't have to be one or the other. Jesus.
Data_Junkie··on Web Based Qt Design Viewer
I would definitely call Qt a toolkit, because, you know, honesty. Java is a language you know.
Data_Junkie··on Web Based Qt Design Viewer
Yeah but if you use Qml you can do whatever you want. That's the magic.
Data_Junkie··on Web Based Qt Design Viewer
Qmake the most underrated thing EVER.
Data_Junkie··on San Francisco, Hostage to the Homeless
Ever been to a developmental center ? Full of addiction, mental illness and criminal anti-social behavior, at a level completely beyond anything seen in any homeless group, not even close. You know what the answer the local government in the area has done to improve the lives of the people they have had locked away from society since the area has existed? Provided them housing.
Data_Junkie··on San Francisco, Hostage to the Homeless
So what the city is saying is more people crap on the streets because there is less shelter ? Wow, color me shocked the reason we have problems with homeless people is that they have no shelter. These geniuses are sure to solve this problem !
Data_Junkie··on Why the NBA Apologized to China over Daryl Morey's Tweet About Hong Kong
Because political satire and propaganda are two different things, power and resistance.
Data_Junkie··on Why the NBA Apologized to China over Daryl Morey's Tweet About Hong Kong
Here is a non-radical opinion --- You are an idiot.
Data_Junkie··on After 'South Park' Censorship Episode, China Deleted the Show from the Web
You completely misunderstand what they do. The art form is political satire, which is just another way of saying "Look at these idiots, we need to stop this".
Data_Junkie··on Culture Fit Interview Questions
That is a complete useless waste of time.
Data_Junkie··on We are clueless about how long things should take
Catering to delusions is very dangerous in a hospital !
Data_Junkie··on Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not
OP meant the importance of it compared to ability.
Data_Junkie··on Richard M. Stallman resigns
Politics. He disregards politics and politicians and they eventually had enough weaponry to remove the threat his disregarding their political aims was to them. Nothing more.
Data_Junkie··on If you have something important to say, don't say it in a paywalled publication
Then Paul should do something about waaaaay to many links on Hacker News to paywalls. It's killing this site.
Data_Junkie··on Ask HN: Whats the most kick-ass Linux laptop these days?
I've had a NP9176 from Sager for a couple years now. Love it now as much as when I got it. Blows my mind how little people consider the Clevos as options. ( Other than System 76, of course. )
Data_Junkie··on Knoppix 8.6 abandons systemd
Well yeah, you would have to. Might as well use initv then. That's the point. At least then you can debug and not have a black box you can't really see into. It is horrid design. Hacker News is getting worse, same thing horrid design . Horrid design is caused by the goals and abilities of the designer clashing with the goals and abilities of the user, and when designers are selfish and want ALL the control the product if useful to less and less people over time. Happens a lot because often the design goal is a hidden desire to wall off functionality to reserve it's usefulness to a select group deemed worthy.
Data_Junkie··on Knoppix 8.6 abandons systemd
Simpler for simple things, which is great when it works, but more complicated for more complicated work, which is simply unacceptable when it prevents you from controlling the system. Good old bad design that matters more as you scale up. It isn't the point of systemd that is the problem, it is this particular case of horrible design.
Data_Junkie··on Xfce 4.14 released
Well Miguel de Icaza started working for Microsoft, and Gnome immediately went into the toilet. Totally unrelated I'm sure, but that did happen.
Data_Junkie··on Ask HN: Best Linux Laptop Replacing a Macbook Pro?
There are alot of Clevo resellers. People have options, but System 76 is the only one people mention anymore. It's a shame.
