DarkNova6··on Why study programming languages (2022)
There absolutely lies value in studying programming language, but maybe not when reinventing ideas of the past.

> I encourage everyone to create the most absurd, implausible, and impractical languages. Chasing the measurable is often useful, expressing the expressible is insightful, but never forget the true goal of language design: to explore and create what isn’t.

Sorry, but this sounds more like an artsclass to me. Don't get me wrong, there was a point in time where exploration of the unknown was the only way to move forward. But these days we would need greater insights into higher-level language semantics and inherent tradeoffs to guide language-design and language evolution.

There is plenty to choose from and one can learn already so much just by reading up on the Java-EG mailing lists. Brian Goetz has a true academic mindset and I frequently feel inspired when I read his reasoning which is both highly structured and accessible.

Otherwise we would just be left with another compiler class. Compiler basics really aren't that difficult.

DarkNova6··on Why we need SIMD
True, but it wouldn’t be unthinkable. Especially if the O(n) algorithm accesses data sequentially and the O(log n) has indirections.

But maybe the author simply made it up.

DarkNova6··on Why we need SIMD
Big O Notation omis constant factors that tend to be significantly larger for log-n algorithms.

I think he talked from personal experience.

Neat little blog post. But it kept me waiting for a punchline which never appeared.

And this is why we need memory safety languages.
DarkNova6··on Systems Programming with Zig
Logical errors and Memory errors aren’t even close to being in the same ballpark.

Memories errors are deterministic errors with non-deterministic consequences. Logical errors are mostly non-deterministic (subjective and domain dependent) but with deterministic consequences.

DarkNova6··on Systems Programming with Zig
If decades of experience shows us anything it is that discipline and skill is not enough to achieve memory safety.

Developers simply aren’t as good at dealing with these problems as they think they are. And even if a few infallible individuals would be truly flawless, their co-workers just aren’t.

Huh. It's almost like these people didn't know what they were talking about. How strange.

Shocker. Static typing wins once again.

An interesting story if you are not aware of it, otherwise nothing new.

DarkNova6··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
To correctly assess the state of the world. Since Tesla exclusively uses visual sensors, they are massively limited in how accurate it can ever be… or safe.

But hey, costs are lower that way.

Yes, this already reads like the beginning of the end. But I am personally pretty happy using Mistral so far and trust Altman only as far as I could throw him.
DarkNova6··on Starbucks: Location closures and elimination of roles
I never understood Starbucks. I live in Europe, we have good coffee places everywhere. They are cheaper and serve significantly better coffee. I can't think of anything I ordered from Starbucks that didn't taste artificial.

I get that you can’t subsidize people without work. But at from what I saw, good juniors got sacked and bad managers were kept. I take that personal and it is one of the reasons I left.

Thanks for fact-checking, I appreciate it. People inside the company told me he's a democrat and should have double checked myself. Thanks for pointing that out.

Lol just go to r/accenture. Compared to those guys this is mild. Reddit is the place where employees refer to their company and CEO in the most vivid and colorful of ways.

Somehow US citizens have this notion that healthcare is a universal problem and that US-problems are not self inflicted.

Everywhere else in the civilized world, you pay less and have better service. The US has the highest degree of industry meddling, most middlemen cashing out and the least governmental regulation. You are objectively being lied to.

DarkNova6··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
It's not about optimism. It is well established in the industry that Tesla's hardware-stack gives them 98% accuracy at the very most. But those voices are drowned by the marketing bravado.

In the case of Musk it has worked out. His lies have earned him a fortune and now he asks Tesla to pay him out with a casual 1 trillion paycheck.

DarkNova6··on Accenture to 'exit' staff that cannot be retrained for age of AI
I think this applies to the economy at large at the moment. Get to the top, cash out and don't look down.
DarkNova6··on Accenture to 'exit' staff that cannot be retrained for age of AI
I'm not even being provocative, it's just the facts. If you want a hot take it would be that:

The only reason the current management is still in place is because the CEO's husband is in politics and institutional investors want to keep their allies in place. In turn, Accenture keeps their friends happy by syphoning money from the bottom to the top, at the cost of their own consultancy and delivery capabilities. Meanwhile, the C-suit cashes out big-time.

The CEO is fundamentally incapable of changing even a light bulb, let alone address strategic problems. As a lawyer and Harvard MBA, she provided "growth" by buying shitty IT-companies where key-experts left the company immediately. She doesn't have the knowledge or intellectual capability or create "value" or "operational efficiency". Instead, they chase trends and make one terrible decision after another. This burns money faster than a conveyor belt can transport into a furnace (like selling off most offices during covid at low prices and having to buy new ones when prices are up).

DarkNova6··on Accenture to 'exit' staff that cannot be retrained for age of AI
How long was that ago? I haven't seen any spreadsheet like this, but the internal tools aren't exactly the best (Accenture is too expensive to work for Accenture, haha).

But the bench also provided great opportunities to do actual good trainings, certifications and upskilling of all kinds. But the company stopped investing into its future long ago. It's just about short term gains for those on top.

DarkNova6··on Accenture to 'exit' staff that cannot be retrained for age of AI
Left Accenture this year and I don't regret it. Their leadership is non-existant, their management bloated and there is no vision whatsoever. The company just pumps back money into stock-buybacks and nobody can explain why the CEO, July Sweet, is still on top of it (spoiler, her husband works in politics).

Talent is leaving the company left and right because promotions and salary adjustments just are not happening. Your achievements don't matter because they already skipped promotions for 2 years, so there are dozens of people in front of the queue.

Juniors are getting fired if they don't have a project for 3 months, but once a surge of projects come around, there is not enough manpower to do staffing. Meanwhile, people in management are safe and get large severance packages.

Edit: Hi to my formers colleagues. I know you are reading this, feel free to disagree ;-)
