DarkContinent··on School of SRE: Curriculum for onboarding non-traditional hires and new grads
Thanks for the comment! I updated the title.

DarkContinent··on CrimeOps: The Operational Art of Cyber Crime
Out of curiosity: if FIN7 was using JIRA's cloud version, can Atlassian be held responsible for FIN7's activities (or in general for ensuring compliance on their platform)?
DarkContinent··on The Foundations of Liberia
How did you come across the opportunity to spend a month in Liberia? Were you there through a volunteer organization?
DarkContinent··on Git-Based Wiki
Do you ever need to update your wiki from a mobile device? If so, how is the experience?
DarkContinent··on Text-Only Social Network
How are you handling content moderation?
DarkContinent··on Ask HN: Have any of you moved back home to save money?
I was able to save $200/month by finding a different apartment (I live in Minneapolis, so this is a roughly 16% decrease in rent).
DarkContinent··on Ask HN: What are some great posts or articles about history of computing?
This isn't one post, but it was on HN a while back:

DarkContinent··on StarTram
Maglev trains are cool! There's actually one here on earth: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_maglev_train
DarkContinent··on Toilets of the World
An entire article about Chinese toilets, and no mention of four star toilets (or three star, or one star).

I am so disappointed.

DarkContinent··on Google AI Education Resources
I think it's really cool that Google is so motivated about creating and releasing educational content that anyone can use to become a great developer. Their tech dev guide is also pretty helpful (although in fairness, their cloud education does focus on GCP pretty heavily).
DarkContinent··on MITM on HTTPS traffic in Kazakhstan
Could someone explain to me what this means and/or why it's bad?
DarkContinent··on The challenges of teaching software engineering
I'm sort of curious how one could "learn" software engineering in a week. Judging from the article, it seems the course assumed very little prior knowledge about SWE (teaching OOP at the beginning). Wouldn't it make more sense to teach a course assuming some basic background knowledge (like OOP and command line utilities) and use the teaching time to discuss architectural patterns, testing practices, etc?
DarkContinent··on Airbnb Backyard will sell houses in 2019
How does AirBnB plan to ensure compliance with local construction regulations? That seems like it could be rather expensive for this endeavor.
DarkContinent··on Making rain simulation as real as possible
Where's the code for this? Anything open source?
DarkContinent··on My Amazon Interview Horror Story
With Google they decided it was a good idea to organize interviews for me (a woman) in a window-papered-over room with exactly one other person (a guy).

Not exactly comforting...

DarkContinent··on Web Design Museum
Would it be possible to incorporate some more recent websites as a point of comparison? To my mind web design has changed pretty significantly in the last ten years and it would be nice to see the progression.
DarkContinent··on Can Beethoven send takedown requests?
Would human monitors work better than ContentID in this situation?
DarkContinent··on Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices?
Epic in Madison, WI, gives all employees their own offices. (I can't find a source but I've been on a tour.)
DarkContinent··on Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales creates news service Wikitribune
What became of WikiNews?
DarkContinent··on Ask HN: Which companies have the best blogs written by their engineering team?
I really like Civis Analytics, which is here: https://www.civisanalytics.com/blog/
DarkContinent··on What Math Do You Need for Physics?
I would make a strong case for numerical methods as well (putting statistics to work on the computer).
DarkContinent··on What is it like to understand advanced mathematics?
This is a rather populist answer, but still pretty cool :)
DarkContinent··on CuratedAI: A literary magazine written by machines, for people
I really don't see the literary merit in a lot of these pieces, but obviously this is an interesting step forward...
DarkContinent··on How to Code for Fun Outside of Work
I really enjoy constructing projects spun off Python Playground from No Starch. Unfortunately that book contains "the answers" as part of the book, but sometimes the author gives interesting directions for further exploration (or I simply use his ideas as a starting point for my own projects).
DarkContinent··on Calculus at the heart of the STEM gender gap, study suggests
From what I've seen, the GPA obsession tends to be common to all students trying for some sort of grad/med/law school, and therefore not tied to major. Non-grad-school bound students, by contrast, are typically much more relaxed.
DarkContinent··on Show HN: Learn Functional Programming Using Haskell
Why is this better than Learn You a Haskell for Great Good?
DarkContinent··on Citibank IT guy deliberately wiped routers, shut down 90% of firm’s US networks
By comparison, Kevin Mitnick got 68 months.
DarkContinent··on Ask HN: 12 year old tech savvy girl – books, programs, events, advice?
I learned Python using Codecademy, then I did some fun projects from Python Playground.

Wearable electronics are good; the Make book seems like a good intro to that area.

DarkContinent··on AI will create 'useless class' of humans
Humans with fewer skills than the elite were not pushed out of the employment market by the invention of dishwashers, laundry machines, or vacuum cleaners. The invention of AI is hardly different.
