DangerousPie··on Air quality reporting on iOS
Huh, looks like you're right. Maybe they fixed it at some point?
DangerousPie··on Air quality reporting on iOS
In the UK for example.
DangerousPie··on Air quality reporting on iOS
I have never understood how to interpret AQI in iOS. Confusingly, the UI will (edit: or at least used to?) say "Air Quality: Low" when what it means is that the pollution level is low (ie. air quality is high). Somewhat disappointing coming from Apple.
DangerousPie··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
I suspect I'm not the only one who tried this, but ChatGPT does predictably well at this task. I gave it a basic prompt of 'Let's play a game. The rule says, "No vehicles in the park". This is a game about language and rules. I will describe different scenarios to you. In response, you respond "Yes" if this scenario violates the rule or "No" if it does not. You have to make a choice and can only say Yes or No.' and then just fed it the scenarios. It ended up agreeing with the majority and my own intuition quite well.

The largest differences were that it didn't considered a rowboard a vehicle and that it did consider the parachute scenario a vehicle.

Bad news for human content moderators I suppose...

DangerousPie··on Surges of cosmic radiation from space directly linked to earthquakes
It's fine if they account for the number of tests they have made when they calculate their significance levels. If they just kept on trying different options until they ended up with p < 0.05 it's almost guaranteed to be noise.

DangerousPie··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Shit, I really hope it doesn't. Do you really want every silly thing you say be recorded, to come bite you in the ass decades down the line?
DangerousPie··on Pursuing status will never bring true happiness
Is that the wealth distribution among white males or the wealth distribution among the population as a whole?
DangerousPie··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
Totally agree with this.

I don't even disagree with most of what they are saying, but it feels like it just became more about campaigning for what they had already decided was the truth rather than actually producing good journalism. There was a time where I actually started listening to old podcasts from years ago because my podcast feed had just became an endless barrage of BLM and culture wars.

I think it has gotten a bit better again over the last year or so, but maybe I just got used to it.

DangerousPie··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
Another German here, and I have to admit I would have actually translated "pathetisch" as "pathetic" as well. I guess my German vocabulary has suffered quite a bit over the years of living abroad.
DangerousPie··on The emotional toll of caring for research animals
Well the whole point is that it can’t.
DangerousPie··on The emotional toll of caring for research animals
To study cures for cancer you need to induce the exact type of cancer you are trying to treat in dozens of identical animals that are as similar as possible to humans, and do so in a reproducible way. suggesting you could just go and work with any old animal that happens to have some sort of cancer is incredibly naive.

I suspect a lot more people here will have access to a browser than to a Linux shell with a specific tool installed.
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
I am a lot more open in honest in person than I am on Slack, because I know everything I say on Slack is logged and can bite me in the ass years down the line.
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
It feels very artificial and takes a lot more planning. I still do this sometimes but it's not the same.
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
I have had a lot of interesting conversations with colleagues from other teams while grabbing a coffee. Sometimes it's just meaningless small talk about the weekend but sometimes we talk about work and help each other find solutions to problems, or realize we should collaborate. And even if it's just small talk, making those kinds of connections can make it a lot easier to get in touch with them in the future.
DangerousPie··on Analog Chess
I guess it depends on your use case. If you have a basic tool where most of the functionality lives in a single file and which you need to compare to previous versions frequently, I can see how just having incrementing file names could be useful.

I would say that this is a bit of an exception though. Most projects are spread across many files and dependencies, so it would be a huge mess trying to manually version those by renaming files all the time. I also rarely want to compare several different versions of my code side by side, so I prefer having all of the old stuff 'hidden away' in git by default.

You need a better ide!
DangerousPie··on Setting the bozo bit on Apple
I have my fair share of complaints about Apple Music, but I don't agree that this is in any way 'basic functionality'. I would expect that 99% of Apple Music users just want an easy way to stream music, not sync custom songs that they received as .mp4 files on WhatsApp across their devices. It would obviously be nice if this was better supported, but I can see how this may not be worth investing a lot of engineering hours in.
DangerousPie··on Nord Stream: Tie-ins and hyperbaric welding
But those trades were already shut down and not coming back anytime soon. If Germany had refused to join sanctions and was still using NS1 + NS2 at full capacity right now then maybe there would have been some motivation to force the issue. But why now, when the pipelines weren't even active?
DangerousPie··on Nord Stream: Tie-ins and hyperbaric welding
Sabotaging their allies' key infrastructure would be an absolutely crazy amount of risk for the US. Even if they think there is a 99% chance they'd not get caught, that is a 1% chance of completely destroying relations their with Germany, Scandinavia, the EU, and probably the entire world. And all of that risk for the very marginal benefit of disabling some pipelines that weren't going to be used anytime soon any way?

I think the much more likely explanation is that this was Russia or at least a faction within Russia. They are the actor that has already started a war in this area, has shown completely disregard for treaties and international law, and has been known to act irrationally (eg. by starting the war in the first place).

DangerousPie··on The EU Commission accepts high error rates when checking chats
Important to note that this is not 10% of all messages being falsely flagged (= 10% false positive rate), but 10% of flagged messages being false positives (= 90% precision). As someone who works with these types of classification problems in a different context, 90% precision is actually quite good - especially assuming there is some sort of manual review process to take care of the 10%.

Whether that makes this whole plan a good idea or not is obviously a very different question, but I think it's important to be clear about what this number actually means.

Do they provide an invoice that fulfils the accounting requirements of your country? I suspect not, so you wouldn’t be able to deduct it.
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: What Happened to Evernote?
Thank you for the suggestion, I am giving that a try right now. A little rough around the edges but seems to work quite well so far!
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: What Happened to Evernote?
Maybe this is just me getting old, but I feel like Evernote has only gotten worse since I started using it over 10 years ago. Back then it was just a list of notes with some formatting and sync capabilities - perfect.

These days they have added all these extra features which I don't need, and which have made the whole app slow and terribly clunky. When I use the iPad app it takes several seconds to load notes or search, and the UI keeps jumping around if it hasn't loaded completely yet. Terrible experience.

The icing on the cake is that they changed the welcome page of the app to no longer show the list of notes - and if you want to edit the page to get that list back, you have to sign up to their premium subscription! And I'm already paying too, just not for the right level of subscription apparently.

I have been meaning to find an alternative for months now, so if anyone has any suggestions please do let me know! The most important features to me are note syncing across iOS/Mac/Windows and the ability to import my notes from Evernote.

DangerousPie··on Apple contributes to OBS to support screen capture using ScreenCaptureKit
Well, given the amount of publicity this PR is getting it probably makes sense to not just let a random software engineer post whatever they feel like.
DangerousPie··on AirPods don't “just work”
Sure, you can work around the limitations of wired head phones. But at the end it's just not worth the trouble for many of us. I ditched my wired head phones years ago and haven't regretted it.
DangerousPie··on Ask HN: Am I being instructed to do something illegal? (DEI hiring practices)
Well that's a problem you always have with subjective decisions during hiring. At the end of the day you'll most likely get away with it unless you're being as blatant as OP's company. But it only takes one disgruntled whistleblower to get yourself into trouble.

And at least historically it's usually been the men who benefitted from this.
