DanEdge··on Douglas Coupland: Moody
Not everything, surely. Microserfs?
DanEdge··on Forcing a generation to code is unprecedented, says Codecademy chief
I'm sure you're right but I also think there are many kids who have probably never even thought about the mechanics of what goes on behind the web sites they visit, the games they play (and everything else vaguely tech related they come into contact with on a daily basis). So maybe it will, at the very least, introduce more kids to the fun that can be had, and ultimately, to careers in the sector.
DanEdge··on Backblaze is building a 270 TB storage pod
Ugh, sorry. Not sure if that was always the case and I've mis-remembered or there's been a change but my NAS point remains. Personally, I'd rather not faff around with an external drive plugged directly into my laptop.

Edit: typo

DanEdge··on Backblaze is building a 270 TB storage pod
Agreed on the awesome post front and one of the reasons I became a customer in the first place. I'm unlikely to renew my annual subscription this year, though, because they don't support external drives/NAS. I don't like cluttering up my laptop with photos so have to transfer everything I need backing up to my rarely used desktop PC, which is a pain. I can understand there's a risk people might abuse networked storage by backing up multiple devices but in my case I wouldn't mind paying more for that service or simply based on actual GBs stored.

Edit: They do support external drives but not NAS. My bad.

DanEdge··on Tesla Model S Outperforms Aston Martin
It's true that you don't tend to mill around town in first gear but the title of the post is 'Tesla Model S outperforms Aston' which implies to me that both cars were performing optimally. I bet most people hadn't picked up on the fact the Aston was in the wrong gear for a race. I hadn't until I read your comment.
DanEdge··on Site Search Should Be Sexy: How Swiftype Raised $1.7M
There's a recent interview with Swiftype founder Quin Hoxie up on Mixergy which is worth a watch. http://mixergy.com/quin-hoxie-swiftype-interview/
DanEdge··on Darpa shows off 1.8-gigapixel drone, can spot a person from 20K feet
Roughly 30cm to the foot.
DanEdge··on xkcd: Instagram
Surely it would have made a better analogy if Chad had ended up hiring out stuff stored rather than selling it.
DanEdge··on Engineering RC cars from Dyson's scrapheap
I bought mine in '99 and replaced a burnt out motor last year but other than that and a split hose it's been fine.
DanEdge··on It will take a 'baby elephant' to knock over this bike [video]
Yes, but you still run wide into oncoming traffic or into that tree. It's not the laying down/sliding that kills you, it's the sudden stop.

I think it's rather telling the video doesn't show it negotiating a corner at a lean angle. Presumably that's quite a problem.

Having said all that, whereas I doubt I'd buy one as a motorcyclist, I might be tempted as a commuter if the price was reasonable (which, to be honest, it isn't).

DanEdge··on 2013 Automobile of the Year: Tesla Model S
There's something very odd about that video. It looks like the M5 is driven off the line from tickover which is not how you would launch it in practice. C.f. http://youtu.be/E-xVVPO8L8s
DanEdge··on A proposal for improving HN : it should cost a user Karma to post
The only thing I would do with HN is to _force people to comment when they downvote_

How do you prevent a: 'Downvoted for being moronic->No, you are' kind of thread?

DanEdge··on The Tale of the $340 CPM
Yeah but CPM is also used to denote revenue. I notice Google now uses RPM in their Adsense reports which makes more sense but they used to (from memory) use the term eCPM.
DanEdge··on This Is the Gyro-Stabilized, Two-Wheeled Future of Transportation
The vast majority of motorcycles are water cooled and have been for some time.

Incidentally, lane splitting isn't being abused when motorcyclists do it to go faster than cars; that's the whole point.

DanEdge··on This Is the Gyro-Stabilized, Two-Wheeled Future of Transportation
As a city car I'm impressed by the Renault Twizy (it's a 4 wheel bike). Okay, so the power output and range are much lower but for shorter commutes when you can charge overnight it seems to make a lot of sense. Relatively cheap too, although you do have to factor in the cost of leasing the battery pack. http://www.renault.co.uk/cars/model/twizy/product.aspx
DanEdge··on Satellite killed by trajectory patent
You can already buy a Lexus which parallel parks for you. Don't know which, if any, elements are patented though.
DanEdge··on European server provider Hetzner now offers a 64GB RAM box for 109€/mon
Webmaster tools? Related: I host a org.uk site in the States which ranks well for relevant searches. It's a tourist site in the UK so I'm only really interested in UK traffic.
DanEdge··on Piracy - You can't have your cake and eat it
Because people who don't pirate stuff are subsidising those who do and if nobody paid for anything, new stuff wouldn't get made (or at least it wouldn't be available from those people who relied on the income from sales to make a living).
DanEdge··on Eric Schmidt criticises education in the UK
Actually, I am British. I did consider the possibility that those comments were an attempt at humour but sadly I think it's unlikely based on my previous experience of Comment Is Free. (For those not familiar, that's how The Guardian refers to its comments section).
DanEdge··on Eric Schmidt criticises education in the UK
A couple of quotes from comments on the Guardian's version of the story:

"There is no need to teach people in the UK how to be a computer programmer because the work can either be shipped out to India or companies can employ people from India to work in their IT companies in the UK."

Which is bad enough, but this one really takes the biscuit for me:

"How can this be true when our exam pass-[rate has been climbing for yonks? The guy's obviously talking crap. What would hr know about education? We should listen to our teachers and ignore capitalists like this."

Wow.
