Dahoon··on Facebook to move UK users to California terms, avoiding EU privacy rules
Incorrect. It protects PII in the EU. It has nothing to do with EU citizenship. It doesn't try to enforce outside the EU either. If you want to move PII out of the EU you have to agree by the rules given. That's not the EU trying to enforce anything outside of the EU but you making an agreement to move data outside the EU on certain terms. It is not the same thing as trying to force EU law on non-EU.

I don't know why people keep repeating this myth. Laws like these are old as dirt. It could as well have been about blood samples from Denmark used in research in the US: the samples are protected by Danish law and to use them in the US you have to agree to certain rules. Again an example of you saying you will follow certain rules to be allowed to transport and use the samples outside Denmark, not Denmark forcing their laws on anything in another country. You are free to not sign anything and not use or move the blood samples or PII anywhere.

I disagree that Zuckerberg feels emotions.

Oh my head. The code is everything it shouldn't be. Everything in one big pile mixed together. Ouch!
Dahoon··on Apple’s “Extended Dynamic Range” Brings HDR to Non-HDR Displays
Ah, better pixels!
Dahoon··on Apple’s “Extended Dynamic Range” Brings HDR to Non-HDR Displays
Apple is know for taking something others invented and making it better/more user-friendly. That's great but it isn't being bleeding edge. Like the first few iPhones. Smartphones made better, but without simple functions like copy and paste for generations. I find it surprising anyone thinks apple's strength is being bleeding edge innovative. It can be counted on one hand how many times they have been so.

>but it cant ignore my router forbidding all external dns communications except for it

DNS over HTTPS says otherwise.

>Apple TV

You don't connect your TV but use Apple devices instead. Uhm... okay. You should see the IDS log I'm looking at here. Apple !== no telemetry. All you are doing is putting all your eggs in one basket.

Dahoon··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
That you know of.. Alexa auto-connects to other Alexa networks (like your neighbors). Some TVs have Alexa built-in. Bingo, telemetry.

>I'm lucky enough to be able to direct ALL DNS through my router first

Even DNS over HTTPS? Do you do packet inspection? Just blocking ports doesn't do much any more. I run an IDS/IPS and it blocks lots of DoH to Google. Apple devices are even worse.

Dahoon··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
To get 5 stars by EuroNCAP (and AFAIK EU law demands it too) the car have to call 911/112 automatically if it detect a crash. I doubt you can remove telemetry without also disabling this. If you do the car is illegal.

Thank you. The quality on HN is falling fast. Quality content like this is awesome.
Dahoon··on Ask HN: Has anyone seen smart TVs connect to unsecured WiFi without permission?
>Best thing to do is to never even start connecting it to a WiFi network

That won't stop the issue mentioned here about it connecting by itself (not that I personally believe it will).

Dahoon··on Ask HN: Has anyone seen smart TVs connect to unsecured WiFi without permission?
1) If it is dangerous in his situation is not up to you to decide. Saying he shouldn't get a TV is like saying to someone to not get internet. Please...

2) Being OPT-in would not stop you from using it.

I'm very curious why you feel so strongly that SmartTV's should be allowed to send data without anyone's knowledge?

Dahoon··on Why do I care the open web is dying?
This thread disagrees with you. HN is slowly becoming like Reddit. Down-vote all you like, it doesn't change the facts.
Dahoon··on PinePhone KDE Community Edition is now available
I'm guessing it is seen as poor taste to not praise KDE in a thread with lots of people that like KDE since you get downvoted. I have the exact thoughts you did. It is amazing because in my experience KDE was one of -if not the- slowest desktop in Linux when I tried it. I'm guessing it was KDE 4. Gnome was way better and faster back then for me, both in Ubuntu and Debian. Great to hear it has become faster. Not so great that KDE users would downvote someone for speaking the truth.
Dahoon··on PinePhone KDE Community Edition is now available
In reality it is likely more realistic to ask where are you as most places still use MMS.
Dahoon··on PinePhone KDE Community Edition is now available
Especially since on PC it doesn't even need 1gb. With 7 add-ons (one being an adblocker) and Firefox having spawned 9 processes in Win10 it still uses less than 1GB RAM for me (even though two tabs are chats, so background-active). Something is clearly either wrong in the Firefox he run, his add-ons or Phinephone.
Dahoon··on HuffPost India is history, thanks to new FDI norms
Look at this political map from when the extreme right wing is rolling over Europe and when lots of politicians were very scared of what is to come. Talk of rise of fascism etc. is seen every day in papers. The future looks bleak:

https://www.politicalcompass.org/euchart

Then look at this and see that the scary wave in the EU is close to Biden 2020:

https://www.politicalcompass.org/uselection2020

Being scared of rise of fascism and extreme right wing parties in Europe == US Democrats 2020.

Americans refuse to see reality. It is as if they are embarrassed by it somehow.

Let me answer with a counter question: If a US based HuffPost was good enough why start an Indian based HuffPost in the first place?

Let me ask you this: If you walk down a busy street, which are the most likely you see: McDonald's or whatever equivalent they have in China? If you look at people using computers do they use Facebook and Google or Renren and Baidu? Do you see more Mandarin taught in schools or English? Chinese or western TV? Clearly culturally there are way more from the US. Tensions isn't because "China is taking over". Culturally India have already been taken over years ago. If anything India is now trying to get away from colonial times and English/American meddling.

One can only hope India rises as a power player in its own right. Pointing fingers at PRC is just propaganda to get people to look away from national problems and the real foreign investment boogeymen which has been in India all along and don't want more competition.

Dahoon··on HuffPost India is history, thanks to new FDI norms
Yes, but while sad it doesn't mean PRC is a bigger threat than many others. 20 is a drop in the sea of people dead in Iraq for example. So to say there's a threat from PRC isn't a direct lie but it is laughably small compared to the threat from the US.
Dahoon··on CAPTCHAs don’t prove you’re human – they prove you’re American (2017)
While you might guess that Yellow means Taxi in most of the world taxis aren't actually yellow. Around here they are mostly big dark Mercedes (many of them vans), maybe with some ads on them. And no big white sign on top either.
Dahoon··on US internet speeds 91% faster in 2020 according to user speed tests
1) 30mbps isn't broadband in 2020. Maybe in 2000.

2) Those numbers for EU are incorrect. Look at Stockholm for one. It is at a minimum 2x too low. Even Denmark which is in top is too low. I live in Denmark and even if I pick cable the lowest I can even order is 300Mbit/s. But that would just be stupidity since I can just click on Fiber and get 1/1Gbit/s for US$45.

Dahoon··on US internet speeds 91% faster in 2020 according to user speed tests
Seems higher than average to me. US$45 is what I pay for 1/1Gbps in Denmark. You could likely switch and get better service on the same network for less.

For English readers this is in English instead of Danish: https://kviknet.dk/en/

Dahoon··on HuffPost India is history, thanks to new FDI norms
There no more a "China threat" than there's a "US threat". Stop spreading FUD on HN.

Also "China" is like "America". Geography, not countries.

On what Americans call Left and what the rest of the world call Right or Center-right. Since this is about India this is incorrect. HuffPost is center-right.
