Dahoon··on WordSafety: Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
You are missing an E in arse..
Dahoon··on WordSafety: Check a name for unwanted meanings in foreign languages
But using a letter hardly anyone outside Denmark knows is even worse. There's a good reason Mærsk isnt called Mærsk anymore.
Dahoon··on What I learned from doing over 60 technical interviews in 30 days
Luckily not everyone is living in a place where you apply to a ton of jobs at the same time. Seems very American. I would only apply to a single job that I found exciting. Can't see how sending out many applications could possibly mean applying to good jobs. More like a lottery. Guess it is the difference between there being a good social security net to catch people and not.
Dahoon··on Nvidia is reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to buy ARM for more than $32B
>If NVIDIA slips over AMD and Intel perf wise during one generation

It has happened many times.

Dahoon··on Nvidia is reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to buy ARM for more than $32B
>While Nvidia has a vastly superior product to AMD

Which product? It can't possibly be their GPUs you mean because that would be hilariously wrong. That is like saying a Lamborghini is a better car than a VW because it has a higher top speed.

To me -and to many many buyers- AMD is the superior product. To most Intel has the best product by far (business laptop, Chromebook, etc.)

Dahoon··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
Funny how Americans see this. I would trust Tiktok less the second it became US owned. We think software and businesses from Russia and PRC does bad things. We know US owned does. It is mindbaffling to me how anyone could believe the risks are lower with US owned software. Snowden's leaks was a complete failure for the common American. They have learned nothing at all. Good old red scare still works way better than facts.
Dahoon··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
As a musician and programmer I find the bar to make money on apps way way lower than on music. Being a good programmer brings you much closer to making money on an app than being a good musician does to get a record out. For one you don't need luck, money and the right contacts to release an app. It isn't even in the same ballpark IMHO. Pro musician is closer to "race driver" than "viral app creator".
Dahoon··on Ask HN: What are your sources for non-sensationalized news?
This will sound strange in an Americans ears but ... state sponsored news for one. Unlike the US news stations and state sponsored news that is poorly hidden propaganda, state sponsored news some places are very unbiased and not full of clickbait. Of course it is rare outside Scandinavia sadly.
Dahoon··on US economy suffers worst quarter since WWII as GDP shrinks 32.9%
32%. About the percentage of effectiveness of the government's handling perhaps?
Dahoon··on Nano 5.0
Only if it is in the big repos.
Dahoon··on Why Bitcoin is not a socialist’s ally
As long as it requires work by CPUs or GPUs it is for rich people.
Dahoon··on Garmin obtains decryption key after ransomware attack
When most of them are from a little connected with the hackers to basically the same people and live off of ransoms I wouldn't use words like Pretty legit. I'm sure the exact business you have worked with is very different, in your opinion. I'm also sure everyone says that. I doubt a single of these businesses exists that isn't connected to hackers at all. How about a name if you are sure and we'll see?
Dahoon··on Airbus' self-flying plane just completed taxi, take-off, and landing tests
Very US specific.
Dahoon··on Without a Vaccine, Researchers Say, Herd Immunity May Never Be Achieved
Hard to get herd immunity from something you can get multiple times and which seem to be more deadly subsequent times.
Dahoon··on Townscaper – A building game inspired by the design of Scandinavian cities
I live in Scandinavia. Doesn't look anything like what style we have or had to me at all. Looks more like something from Germany or Austria.
Dahoon··on The Black Magic of Systematically Reducing Linux OS Jitter
I'd like to know what black (white?) magic causes me to not see any jitter. Not even in virtual machines in Proxmox have I met this problem. But if he actually have proof I'm sure patches are excepted.
Dahoon··on Dropbox is ramping up the sleaze with misleading spam emails
Most companies outright lie and try to trick paying customers into thinking the mails they send is personal and not mass mail? I'm glad I have never met any of these "most companies".
Dahoon··on Apple, Anticompetition, and Censorship
So in short they want Apple to do it the way of American customs and laws everywhere, including in China no matter Chinese customs and laws. Somehow I doubt this goes both ways and that they will agree that Russian and Chinese companies should follow Chinese laws and customs in th US. If they don't they are hypocrites. This smells of someone thinking the US is a shining beacon of light that others should follow while in fact most of Europe would be a better lead. So how about forcing GDPR on Apple inside the US for its American customers? Or how about if selling Lego to children in the US has to follow Danish laws?
Dahoon··on The vocal ranges of the greatest artists of all time

Dahoon··on The History of Child Abuse (1998)
This from the article:

>A childhood more or less free from adult sexual use is in fact a very late historical achievement, limited to a few fortunate children in a few modern nations.

Clashes with this:

>In America, the most accurate scientific studies, based on lengthy interviews, report that 30 percent of men and 40 percent of women remember having been sexually molested during childhood—defining “molestation” as actual genital contact, not just exposure.

30-40 procent isn't "more or less free from adult sexual use" in my opinion. The numbers looks genuine from a quick search but I hope they are not. Otherwise something is very wrong.

>Adjusting statistically for what is known about these additional factors, I have concluded that the real sexual abuse rate for America is 60 percent for girls and 45 percent for boys, about half of these directly incestuous.

Dahoon··on Teenager spends $20k of parents’ money on Twitch donations without them knowing
If it means her child would have to go through an awful justice system that wouldn't recognize justice if it hit it in the head otherwise? Yes.
Dahoon··on The NBA bans customers from putting ‘freehongkong’ on customized league jerseys
How is that different from using a service in the states where the NSA spies on everything?
Dahoon··on The NBA bans customers from putting ‘freehongkong’ on customized league jerseys
>China's great if you have a decent amount of money

Besides Scandinavian countries where the social security net is amazing comparably, isn't that the same in most of the world? I'm not sure being poor in China is worse than elsewhere?

Dahoon··on Then the pro-slavery guy wrote a letter to the editor
Paywall.
Dahoon··on Tell HN: Twitter does not require 2FA to disable 2FA
So you log in with 2fa and then remove 2fa? Can't test as I don't use SoMe outside HN.
Dahoon··on Google rejected historically-accurate WW2 game due to Nazi references
Interesting. I wonder if it shows the evil on both sides or only one.
Dahoon··on Russia Is Trying to Beat the West to a Covid-19 Vaccine
>If Russia proclaims success in the hunt for a vaccine before other candidates, it could create a world of duelling vaccines and geopolitical battles over who gets supplies.

You could exchange "Russia" with "US" and it would be almost the same. The only difference is that you might think/fear Russia will do so but we know the US will, as Trump has said he will.

Dahoon··on Former ICANN CEO is now co-CEO of the private equity firm that tried to buy .org
After following KnuJoN nothing would surprise me with ICANN unless it was good. It needs to die and everything it has touched moved somewhere else that cannot be manipulated like it is now and out of reach of the US.
Dahoon··on An update on our security incident
While I do agree with you I don't see how this would have helped unless it is encrypted with a key Twitter doesn't have (ie. encrypted in the client with something else than the password). I highly doubt we will see that happen.
Dahoon··on Top EU court overturns US data transfer agreement in Facebook case
But you do see that the problem is US law? Just a little privacy and this wouldn't have happened.
