Dahoon··on Man dies from eating more than a bag of liquorice a day
Just want to point out that your post make it sound like the tobacco-pibe shaped licorice is strong licorice. It is actually some of the mildest you can possibly make.
Dahoon··on AppStore Reviews Should Be Stricter
The fault is always with the parent that gives a child an iPad or iPhone. Don't blame your laziness on app stores. Children grow up fine (better?) without those devices anyway. We all did so far. Grow a pair.
Dahoon··on AppStore Reviews Should Be Stricter
>Trusting other companies to build their own app stores in a privacy-preserving and user-friendly manner

Which app store is "privacy-preserving and user-friendly" ? None of the two big ones fit either. Sure you could argue one might be better than a Facebook made one but that doesn't mean they are good or uphold privacy.

Dahoon··on Leak reveals $2T of possibly corrupt US financial activity
This is just BS. Hiding a crime behind an NDA doesn't mean it should be illegal to tell about that crime.
Dahoon··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
That would be the day I might own my first Apple device or even release my apps on it.
Dahoon··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
No it does not. Sony isn't like Apple. I can freely buy things in / for PlayStation games with my credit card. Not so in iOS apps. There all payment goes through Apple, taking an additional 30% cut above the 30% cut of the app price. Neither Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo does this.
Dahoon··on Epic, Spotify, and Tinder form advocacy group to push for app store changes
It isn't a lie. Steam takes a cut too yes, but Apple takes a cut after that 30% you mention. You don't pay 30% to Steam from in-app purchases. No one except Apple force you to use its payment system and take an additional 30% cut after the first 30% cut of the app price. Unless you are a small indie developer you end up paying way more to Apple than any other platform.
Dahoon··on “The Problem with the U.S. economy is that there are too many poor people”
Ah, like the Braveheart quote:

"The trouble with Scotland is that it's full of Scots."

Dahoon··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
But if you live outside PRC and USA, who is the most likely (however unlikely) to kick down your door? I'd wager that in most of the world that would be the FBI or CIA. Maybe I'm reading the wrong news sites because I live far from Asia but I have heard of lots of raids where the FBI were involved (Piratebay for example) or CIA (extraordinary rendition) but never heard of a single time Chinese police were operating in a foreign country. Maybe I'm wrong but in my understanding it happens weekly with the US and never with the PRC.
Dahoon··on How to say no, for the people pleaser who always says yes
>the gossipy busybodies just disgusted me

Again I funnily enough have the exact opposite experience. In my experience if you live near 1000 people there are a higher risk of there being "gossipy busybodies" than if you live near 100 people or 10. In my opinion the difference is not the amount of people that talk rumors, as it is likely always around the same percentage, but that they drown out in a big city. So I guess the question is, if that is true: Do you care about the rumor or about hearing the rumor?

All it takes to ruin it is one bad neighbor. I went from party and traffic noise, people trying to threaten me to back off when I complained of noise and drugs being sold to waving to people in the neighborhood, walking our dogs together, helping out when a car is broken down, etc. It is like night and day.

Dahoon··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
In the US, yes.
Dahoon··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
About:config works just fine on my Android phone with Firefox 81.1.1-beta5. What seems to be the problem?
Dahoon··on How to say no, for the people pleaser who always says yes
I have the excact opposite experience. The closer you live, the more people protect their privacy sphere around them and more often avoid real connections with people they run into, like neighbors. After we moved from living close in the city to outside the city limits, with way more space around us, we went from "hello" when meeting a neighbor to now stopping up and talking for real and taking a real interest in eachother, helping eachother out, etc.
Dahoon··on Firefox 81.0
If the OS is worth its salt it knows which media player is playing and lets you control it. I don't see how this could ever be a problem. It is no different than having two mediaplayers installed. I have never seen the wrong mediaplayer suddenly being controlled. Just set whatever as standard/default. Works fine in Android, Linux and Windows.
Dahoon··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
So exactly like the Tiktok oracle deal? The US is taking the low road while pointing fingers.
Dahoon··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
Because the Chinese apps aren't illegal in US law.
Dahoon··on Trump’s WeChat curbs halted by judge on free speech concerns
>The difference between TikTok and WeChat and FB/Google/Twitter is obvious: the former are to some degree controlled by China and the latter are private entities.

How is for example Facebook better because it isn't somehow tied in to the US government? On the one hand the state still have access to all the data from Facebook it wants (NSA, warrants) but on the other they have a hard time protecting its users privacy rights. I'm not convinced private entities are any better. For a US citizen maybe Facebook is better as a private entity but for everyone else outside the US?

Personally I would rather put my data in a Chinese-owned Tiktok than an American one because of the extreme amount of data already flowing into US services. Even if Tiktok is used to spy on me I can't see how it would be any worse for an European than putting more data into US services.

Dahoon··on Berlin Now Has a City-Run Recycling Department Store
We have had state-owned second-hand stores all my life here (Scandinavia). I don't see any difference to the one in the article. The city even picks up items at you home or you could deliver them at recycling and garbage disposal areas. Broken things are often fixed and then sold too.
Dahoon··on A Cryptologic Mystery
>Both the US (and its allies) and the Soviet Union (and its satellites) made extensive use of shortwave radio

Spot the bias.

Dahoon··on Tiger Lake Tested
"Intel Bulldozer" more like it.
Dahoon··on The Non-Voter
>That isn’t surprising since the poorest Americans are the least likely to vote.

And right there is the biggest reason of the state of the US. I wouldn't even call it s democracy with such a low amount of votes for the ones winning. But I don't see much want for change in the two ruling "families".

Dahoon··on Nvidia Broadcast App
Ah yet another Nvidia thing that would work everywhere but is blocked in software because greed. Remember how raytracing was supposed to only work properly on RTX but when people got mad suddenly it wasn't only RTX cards? And now we are even seeing it on the old and slow PS4. Next they'd likely do something crazy like require unnecessary hardware in screens or something. Oh wait..
Dahoon··on We Don’t Like Our Underground House
All of those problems would be covered by insurance were I live. Glad I don't have to buy a house with such little buyer protection.
Dahoon··on This electrical transmission tower has a problem
I'm amazed how a nation as rich as the US allows things to fall apart as much as it does but maybe one of the reasons it is so rich is because of the lack of money used on fixing things? Last time it was dangerous bridges called out. What's next?

If only state run wasn't even worse in the US it could be a better way. It baffles the mind that electricity, gas, internet, etc. is being run on a for-profit basis. Clearly these are all in the nations interest to have top-notch.

Dahoon··on Oculus Quest 2
You do need a FB account - and a real one at that. If you create a fake one and you get locked out and you can't prove you are that fake person FB will lock you out of the account (and all bought software).
Dahoon··on Oculus Quest 2
You have actually tested it before saying you know better?
Dahoon··on Oculus Quest 2
How about the last part of that quote?

>"....which puts Facebook's original statement into question. The FB rep may have been describing a downgrade in frequency or power for those LED bulbs in Quest 2 controllers."

Dahoon··on Large-scale Abuse of Contact Discovery in Mobile Messengers [pdf]
How is user discovery of Telegram at 0.02% worse than Signal at 100%? It isn't like they could possible get it any higher and Telegram's couldn't get much lower. People who know what they are talking about have been critical of Signals use of phone numbers since the start but Signal have always brushed it off as irrelevant.
Dahoon··on Cyberpunk 2077 Logos
I never pre-order games but I did with this even though I'm not sure it is really my kind of game. CDPR and GOG are basically the direct opposite of EA and Activision. Good vs. Evil. Worth supporting unlike pretty much anyone else.
Dahoon··on Cyberpunk 2077 Logos
>They don't look very edgy

Good. Edgy is icky.
