DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
That’s exactly how i used the term.
DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
I never implied they were not friendly. All the YC folks seem very nice. I’m sure they want you to succeed, but they succeed more if you take a strategy that is against your self-interest.
DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
It is too small when the expected payoff is business success in one lifetime.
DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
It’s the definition from economics, not physics:

This is how PG markets YC as well. Why do you think he wrote all those essays? :)
DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
If I was pitching my product, maybe I would have put a link to it. Or maybe mentioned the name.

Do you think all of PG’s essays aren’t pitching you something?

I’ve been on the acquirer side of $50M exits and from what I’ve seen almost no one makes any money in those situations. It is usually a deal done in desperation and everyone is diluted to the brim.

You think all the YC articles aren’t also peddling something? At least I’m clear.
DVassallo··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
The most successful might be from category two, but what is the denominator? How many with that attitude failed? I suspect category one has significantly higher survival, probably close to 100%.

They’re an exception because VCs pressure funded not to do what Sahil did. All investors wanted him to shut it down and do something else.
DVassallo··on Iatrogenics: Why Intervention Often Leads to Worse Outcomes
Iatrogenics happens when the benefits are clear and the harms are hidden. So “rational” people tend to intervene because it would seem the benefits outweigh the costs.
DVassallo··on 1k True Fans (2008)
You will want to go where people already hang around. There are many sites where people interested in some topic are constantly refreshing the page looking for something interesting/helpful/useful/entertaining/etc. Find those places, help as many people as you can, and build a name for yourself there.
DVassallo··on Lumber rally cools with transport snarls easing, buyers balking
There's a big difference between the market of "ready to move into" houses and new construction. Lumber prices mostly impact the latter.
DVassallo··on The illusion of evidence based medicine
You need just one contradicting observation to invalidate something, while a million consistent observations can never fully prove it.

(Paraphrasing Karl Popper, mentioned in the article).

DVassallo··on Building a modern home in the woods
You can’t. (I just bought 12 acres 50mins within Seattle.)
DVassallo··on The most precious resource is agency
Just walked to say https://twitter.com/simonsarris (the author) is probably my favorite Twitter account. Go follow for a peek into the life of someone living a blissful existence.
DVassallo··on Modular Homes for Under $50k
In my region, the material costs are just ~15% of the total cost to build. It's almost all labor costs.
DVassallo··on Modular Homes for Under $50k
There’s a big difference between spec houses and custom houses. I’m building a custom home in King County, WA right now, and it’s almost impossible to build under $300/sqft. And no, doesn’t include cost of land or land preparation costs.
DVassallo··on Writing books is not really a good idea
The price is $25, but I’ve experimented between $15 and $38.

I spent about $8K on ads (Reddit) but most of my marketing was organic from my Twitter account initially, and later it was mostly word of mouth.

DVassallo··on Writing books is not really a good idea
As an example of that middle ground mentioned in the article, I spent 2 weeks writing a short technical book about AWS, self-published it, and sold 6,587 copies and $133,030 in sales in 1.5 years.
DVassallo··on “About one-third of Basecamp employees accepted buyouts today”
This is not a layoff. This seems to be a situation where the 1/3rd minority was annoying the 2/3rd majority.
DVassallo··on What’s Wrong With The Honeywell Humidifier
Why is negative air pressure important?
DVassallo··on Show HN: Userbase – Auth and E2E encrypted storage in a few lines of code
It can be self-hosted easily on AWS (it uses EC2, S3 and DynamoDB). It’s fully open source, MIT license.
DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
It was marginal, but it kicked in after around EUR 25K IIRC. There were only 2 rates. This was 2010.
DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
I wish :) I’m 37, with 2 kids (6 and 3).
DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
There’s a list of products on dvassallo.com. Lifetime revenue:

- $190K - Everyone can Build a Twitter Audience

- $125K - The Good Parts of AWS

- $15K - Profit and Loss

- $5K - Userbase

I also made $50K freelancing, $40K of those from Gumroad.

All started after Dec 2019.

DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
When I lived in Ireland I paid 51% of my income in taxes. Imagine that!
DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
No, I own a SaaS business and also sell my own products on Gumroad itself. In fact, the latter was my biggest income source in 2020 — $282K sales last year: https://twitter.com/dvassallo/status/1333888186762678274
DVassallo··on No meetings, no deadlines, no full-time employees
I’m making $10K/mo for a quarter-time PM role at Gumroad (so about $250/hr).
