Also from Colorado and this very much confused me.

For added context.. My partner went to CSU and we moved away from FC a little over a year ago. Our rent for a 1BR / 1BA was $1,700 a month.
DMell··on Salt Lake 2002 – not enough memory/crashes to desktop after starting error
It was an amazing read! I still have so much more digging to do from it.

DMell··on Ask HN: What is a good book about how computers work?
This book is such a gem and was so easy to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

Thank you! This looks awesome.
DMell··on Foundational distributed systems papers (2021)
This is an amazing resource - thank you for sharing. I did some undergrad research before landing my current position and really need to get back to exploring things outside of what I'm currently working with.

If anyone has any other papers to recommend for a junior engineer, please don't hesitate to share!

DMell··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
This is similar to my situation. I am a fit individual that is in the gym five days a week, runs marathons, backcountry skis multiple times a week, etc. and have diagnosed sleep apnea. However, I can't for the life of me get through a single night with the machine to the point where it has sat in a closet for months. I also sleep on my side or stomach so I immediately wake up to the mask blasting air at me due to a seal. The nose pillows didn't work as well.
DMell··on Ask HN: What are your favorite audiobooks?

DMell··on Sugihara's Dog
I still don't. Can someone explain?
DMell··on Launch HN: OutSail (YC W23) – Wingsails to reduce cargo ship fuel consumption
Does this have any impact on the stability of the ship in rolling seas? Is this an issue that is countered with ballasts or would there need to be thought into a more traditional sailing keel?

Also, what is the maintenance like on these? When I was in the Navy we had huge crews to conduct routine maintenance but on cargo ships, there tend to be small numbers.

Love this - what a cool idea!

> You shouldn't buy lottery tickets anyway (and ChatGPT will tell you so, if you ask it).

I was curious so asked..

ChatGPT:

As an AI language model, I cannot endorse or encourage gambling activities, including playing the lottery. However, I can provide some information about the lottery and the best strategies that people use to increase their chances of winning:

- Play regularly: The more you play, the better your chances of winning. But remember, playing the lottery can be addictive, so it is important to set a budget and stick to it.

- Play less popular games: Less popular lottery games tend to have smaller jackpots but better odds of winning.

- Join a lottery pool: Joining a group of people who pool their money together to buy lottery tickets can increase your chances of winning.

- Choose your numbers carefully: Some people believe in choosing numbers that are meaningful to them, such as birthdays or anniversaries. Others prefer to choose random numbers. It's important to note that the odds of winning are the same no matter what numbers you choose.

- Consider the odds: It's important to understand the odds of winning the lottery. The odds vary depending on the game, but in general, the odds of winning the jackpot are very low.

It's important to remember that playing the lottery is a form of gambling, and there are no guarantees of winning. It's important to play responsibly and never spend more than you can afford to lose.

DMell··on I made Nomad Life Mobile App for digital nomads and travelers
First, congrats on the launch.

Your website needs a lot of work as, unless I’m missing something, it tells us nothing about what the app is or what it does.

Question though, does it also go over tax implementations of working in specific countries as well as regulations for each?

DMell··on Web Design Museum 1991-2006
I’m unsure why, but this just made me feel a certain level of sadness.
DMell··on Is AM radio dead?
Their sports offerings are what gets me. I watch a lot of hockey and use it to listen to random games while doing other things.
DMell··on Is AM radio dead?
There is a very large number of areas in Colorado that don't have coverage.
DMell··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully started their career over in their 30s?
Not necessarily a career coach, but as a new software engineer I have had a few users on HN take the time to talk through career decisions over zoom with me. It actually led to my first job out of college.
DMell··on Ask HN: Suggestions on where to learn how to code in Python? (0 experience)

DMell··on Burn-out, daunting work, overstretched, and it's just too much
Out of genuine curiosity, what are some areas you think could be improved do you have any examples of people / teams working toward improving them?
DMell··on What are you planning to learn in 2023?
Disabling all notifications during the day was a fantastic life improvement for me. I had a period of time in my job where I struggled to get into the projects and had zero passion for what we are doing so it was easy to get distracted. Throwing myself into my work for bursts at a time with zero distractions actually brought the passion back as I felt more invested.

I have a period of time in the morning when I'm usually catching up on emails, drinking my coffee, browsing HN, etc and a period after dinner but before bed where my notifications are on. Any other time, call me twice and I'll answer.
