The real estate market is still largely price fixed and quite inefficient.
Kidding aside, robcohen makes a great point about the infinite backwards compatibility … if MSFT were to sunset more product versions more quickly it could accelerate upgrade cycles. But then again “new code considered harmful” applies.
What could help is a much more modular OS that installs a very slim base set of functionality and lets users choose additional capabilities to install or not. This would (perhaps) cut vuln and misconfig surface area if it were implemented in a real way.
It reminds me somewhat of the insanely priced AxiosHQ tool from Axios which is something like $50,000 year. The Axios tool is less about tone and more about copiloting writers to the Smart Brevity format of writing (https://www.axios.com/smart-brevity) Axios made famous. Axios is very non-transparent about their pricing. Bravo to Textok for being open and transparent.
A while back I had to create a high speed steaming data processor (not a spark cluster and similar creatures), but a c program that could sit in-line in a high speed data stream and match specific patterns and take actions based on the type of pattern that hit. As part of optimizing for speed and throughput a colleague and I did an obnoxious level of experimentation with read sizes (slurps of data) to minimize io wait queues and memory pressure. Being aligned with the cache-line size, either 1x or 2x was the winner. Good low level close to the hardware c fun for sure.
Here’s one of these systems https://www.sharkbanz.com/ Disclosure: Info only. I have no connections to this company.
The entire experience using Go + Fiber (gofiber.io) + templates + HTMX (htmx.org) is fantastic. This approach has allowed us to create a beautiful modern application that's highly performant, interactive in all the places you'd expect, and simple code, deps, devops, etc.
Lesson learned - use a professional brokerage like IBKR, Schwab, etc.
You can also "yes and" this. Invest in the startup, by some investments, etc. Multiple streams of returns that are uncorrelated is the holy grail formula for investing [1].
