The horrors.
It was the first MMO for many, so it still has a following / nostalgia factor.
It's far easier and has further reach than doing it manually.
It's like how product people / C levels have absolutely no understanding of what makes for good code or a good engineering shop (aside from perceived costs.)
Questionable output, generally shunned by artisans.
But possibly good enough for some.
If one uses a good source of entropy (e.g. dice rolls) then one will not "get screwed."

It's not for everybody, for sure.
It really is a high failure rate.
PHP is not the only language that has this type of behavior.
I recognize not everyone's work is [as] important, but we should still strive for excellence (and safety.)
