D-Coder··on What is the size of Yemen? (2024)
> knowing absolutely nothing about the inner workings of the counter-narcotics operations, assert that there is no evidence that those people are drug runners

Well, he's correct that there is no evidence known to him, so there IS no evidence known to him.

To my knowledge, the administration has not released any evidence, only claims: "We know they are drug smugglers and we have evidence that we will not show you."

D-Coder··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
I can think of several faster ways.

Besides, if people know they'll be around for longer, they will have more incentive to take care of the place.

D-Coder··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
> Nothing is supposed to persist forever it doesn’t even make sense to try

Perhaps instead of "forever," we could settle for, let's say, a thousand years in good health?

D-Coder··on Netherlands pulls gold out of the US
> Russia is going to have a very hard time directly attacking the Eurozone without also hitting NATO home soil - which through Article 5 would also pull in plenty of non-Euro countries, including the United States.

That's the plan, but under Glorious Leader? Not clear which side he would attack (or possibly neither).

D-Coder··on Meet the Ig Nobel Prize Winners
This article had me at pneumotachometers (emphasis mine):

> Unno used a pair of pneumotachometers (instruments to measure volume flow of respired gases) in parallel for his experiments to determine the velocity, volume, and time scale of blowing through each side of the nose over 60 trials.

D-Coder··on Thanks to Lake Ontario, MapQuest is popular all over again
That may be, but it's still what many people want.
D-Coder··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
Well, if you die of heart disease first, yes. In a way.
D-Coder··on Branching Paths
How bad are pull requests?
D-Coder··on About the security content of macOS Tahoe 26.6
> wait until at least the X.1 release

I think that applies to almost all software, not just Apple OSes. After all, Confucius said: "The only thing worse than old software is new software."

D-Coder··on Decker, a platform that builds on the legacy of Hypercard and classic macOS
I'm using LiveCode for a dozen personal applications (and for just the fun of coding; I'm a retired s/w engineer). It's no longer free, but I started with HyperCard and LiveCode is an excellent replacement, at least for me.
D-Coder··on Late Bronze Age Collapse
And carrying stuff, the Lug Age.
D-Coder··on Linux eliminates the strncpy API after six years of work, 360 patches
Note that "360 Patches" is 360 uses of strncpy that have been removed, not necessarily bugs.
D-Coder··on How to earn a billion dollars
Yes, and people keep paying ridiculous prices for the first and for ads for the second.
D-Coder··on That Methyl Methacrylate Tank
> He never gave us a fucking manual in the first place, so who knows what He is thinking.

He did give us a manual. He very clearly says that slavery is okay and eating shrimp is a sin, and lots of other rules.

D-Coder··on Newton's law of gravity passes its biggest test
> non-local hidden variable

Like, global variables?

D-Coder··on Ex-FBI Director Comey indicted in probe over online post
Someone should be fined a bazillion dollars and disbarred for life for this indictment. Like every lawyer and law firm involved in the prosecution.
D-Coder··on Why has there been so little progress on Alzheimer's disease?
A billion years of kludges.
D-Coder··on America's Geothermal Breakthrough
> Seriously, I wonder about why it's supported.

$$$.

D-Coder··on Laws of Software Engineering
"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action." — Auric Goldfinger
D-Coder··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
So... who is Satoshi?
D-Coder··on Intelligent people are better judges of the intelligence of others
I've heard that a non-Mensan asked a Mensan what it's like at a Mensa event. They replied, "If I have to explain something during a conversation, I only have to explain it _once_."
D-Coder··on Intelligent people are better judges of the intelligence of others
I see your point, but voters are not voting based on the candidate's intelligence levels.
D-Coder··on 1929: Inside the Greatest Crash in Wall Street History
Crashing the economy in order to put all the blame on already marginalized scapegoats may well be the point.
D-Coder··on The Legibility of Serif and Sans Serif Typefaces (2022)
> Uppercase doesn't distort shapes

It distorts the shape of the words. Many people recognize many words as a whole, not by checking each letter in (eg) "the".

D-Coder··on Should QA exist?
Yes! I had a QA person apologize once for finding a bug in my code. I thanked him for not letting it make me look like an idiot.
D-Coder··on US and TotalEnergies reach 'nearly $1B' deal to end offshore wind projects
> There are no fully electric, or even hybrid, options for the type of vehicle I drive.

So fucking what? Keep driving your air-pollution vehicle. No one (not even Obama or Biden) is trying to take it away from you.

D-Coder··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia

D-Coder··on The bureaucracy blocking the chance at a cure
And killing them with an insufficiently tested treatment is not optimal.
D-Coder··on The bureaucracy blocking the chance at a cure
It's a trade-off: better info versus handling an immediate crisis. If it's not an immediate crisis, you can take more time.

Engineering is trade-offs.

D-Coder··on This job has become the ultimate case study why AI won't replace human workers
Scroll down a page or so, the article is there. It's identical to just going to CNN's article, not sure why it's needed though.
